42% of PS5 purchases from Sony's latest record breaking quarter has come from new users. Where do we think these users are coming from?

Where are all these new first-time PlayStation console owners coming from?

This news is there in the main Sony Q3 thread but I thought was worth talking about in a separate thread.

Where do we think most of these new users are coming from?

Are they primarily coming from emerging markets like India, China etc..?

Are they coming from Xbox users who have migrated or are they coming from new folks who are entering gaming for the first time in established gaming markets like US?

42% of PS5 purchases in the quarter were new users.

The answer should be obvious

(D) All of the Above

Video gaming is a growing market and will continue to be as long as the population of the world is continuously increasing

I reckon there's a not insignificant number of people too dumb to carry over accounts from PS4 and just start new ones. Maybe don't even realise the system has backwards compatibility

I bet these stats scare the shit out of Xbox, they've been desperately trying to get Xbox users moved over to pc instead of playstation, it's the current marching orders for the shills.

All three, but PC vs PS is negligible and as new gens jump on, older people fall off.

We all know that between PS and Xbox, people from one side always switch to the other each gen.

So really, the answer is pretty obvious.

Conceptually it never made sense to begin with, PC gamers and console gamers have always a single circle on the Venn diagram

I mean, Sony are pushing China stuff quite hard, so I imagine that this has a positive effect on the sales over there.

Euros big kids telling little kids to buy the blue box for whatever reason no one knows except euro countries.

PS4 cemented itself as the only game box for TV worth owning, so it's not a stretch to think that we're finally seeing Xbox peeps migrating over. It will accelerate too. Especially now.

Possible buyer of Xbox, with the latest moves to become a Third party, they become buyers of Playstation, which without much effort has become the console that has all the games, except those of Nintendo.

A combination of all three, i suppose. Slaps down that contrived "hur dur, PS is not growing."
They just posted data showing they are basically flat in units from PS4. The only growth comes in selling more games at higher prices and services to the same size user base. And of course whatever they are doing on PC.

The fact that they are not bigger than PS5 in terms of units when Xbox is smaller is concerning.

But if IGN said that PS5 sales were plummeting, 9.5 million in a quarter is a beastly number, another year selling more than 20 million consoles...and this GTAVI.

Impossible to say. If like 0.0000000000000000001% of Indians suddently feel compelled to buy a PS5, you'll probably get that kind of uptick and then some.

Maybe in your mind, over 40% new users last quarter isn't growth, but in actual reality it is. So, continue on with make believe, I guess.

Kids are born every day, older gaming dads leaving all the gear for their kids make them invest in the hobby, I don't think China and other big emerging markets give a shit about consoles to the point of buying in droves
