5 video games or franchises everyone hates, but you think is good

So I wanted to do the inverse of Heimdall_Xtreme Heimdall_Xtreme thread, but instead of focusing on what we hate, how about games we like? I know in my own experience I've played games that get a lot of hate, but have had a lot of fun with them. However, 15 answers seemed like a bit too much, so I lowered it down to just 5 choices. Here's some of my choices.

1. Final Fantasy XVI - I understand why people wouldn't necessarily love this game. I have my own issues with it as well. Playing it, the combat was definitely the worst part for me, but I still found the writing to be engaging at times. It dragged in some spots, and the side quests were pretty bad, but I still wouldn't call it one of the worst games ever like some people seem to think.

2. Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League - personally, even this answer surprises me sometimes. Normally I hate live services games, and I even hated the game when it first launched and tried playing it. About a year after launch though, I picked it up for $5 on sale and gave it another try, and found myself having a good time. The combat, and traversal aspect of the gameplay finally clicked with me. If I had friends to play with, I could see myself having a lot more fun with it, but even as a single player experience, I just found I enjoyed playing through the story, and early seasons for a good amount of time. Worth the $5 for sure.

3. Lost Planet 3 - I remember always hearing "oh, it's a shitty sequel made by a B tier western studio"...and it's kinda my favorite of the series. I really liked this game. I thought the characters and writing were good, and the gameplay was fun. It visually looked pretty cool to me at the time it came out too.

4. Gal*Gun - Oh yeah, there I am...I'm a pervert! Stupid lame pervert liking these games, har har. But ya know what? I don't care lol I'm too old to care if people think that of me. I've never grown out of pervert humor, and I'm not ashamed of it. The thing is though, the Gal*Gun games...they're pervy in the same way a teen sex comedy that they used to make is. That's why I find them amusing. I like the absurdity of the concept of having to literally fight off girls who are in love with you because you got hit with too many cupid arrows. It's silly, and fun. The actual gameplay can be pretty fun I honestly think too. Gal*Gun 2 especially is fun because it has VR support on PC, and I found it to be one of the more fun games to play in VR because you're looking around all the environment having to shoot. The only problem is the PC version is janky enough that it sometimes just doesn't run for me. The series also led to a great spin-off series with great 2D art with the Gal Guardians 2d action games.

5. Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - so this is a tricky one because I don't think everyone hates it since it sold well, but the conversation of how bad it looked and performed on Switch 1 really overshadowed it a lot. Even I agree, it ran like dogshit when I played it on Switch 1...however, beyond that...I really liked the game overall. I liked the ideas they came up with, and I liked their attempts to freshen up the formula for the series. It's not perfect, and I think a franchise that makes as much money as Pokemon can afford to put damn voice acting in their games already, but it was still a real good game in the series overall.

Honorable mentions of some titles that I think GAF hates...but are still pretty popular if sales are any indication. Fortnite, and Borderlands. I still haven't played Borderlands 3, so I can't say if I'd also hate it, but I love the series before that, and don't understand the rapid hate it gets on here.

I don't think these games are "hated", but I often hear some "meh" about them.

Absolutely loved Payday 3.

Enjoyed it so much bought Hitman World of Assasination to play something similar.

Also, Suicide Squad was a lot of fun for a little I played with the group. Then we couldn't continue for some reason. But that game I liked so far. There is a good amount of depth in gameplay.

i got a lot, since i'm always ended to not liking people likes, and liking what people seems hate.
(note: i dont like anything with woke red flag though, and these days people seems agree with me as well)

State of Decay franchise
Farcry franchise
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Theme Park Manager
Witchaven franchise

crap story, fabulous battles, a bit Diablo style

oh, Final Fantasy 13 is another one, there is a lot of tasty beef if you proceed into it, totally explored back then

I don't think I can get 5 games but Final Fantasy XV would be on top.

The party dynamic really resonate with me and find the combat very good. Much better than FFXVI to me.
Also, despite some storytelling issue (Luna Freya I am talking about you), I find the story quite good and it really gets me in by the end.
I recognize the flaws but it's always a pleasure to play it. Already finish it twice and would do it again.

It was a nice take on modern Final Fantasy that still kept the soul of the traditional ones for me.
Overall this game has some vibes that I really like.
EDIT : also has the best fishing minigame ever. I spend hours on it

EDIT 2 : Anthem was also pretty good. I never finished it but the gameplay and flying mechanics was pretty good to me. Spended quite some time on it.

1.Destiny - I think people hate it because of its cost structure, and it being GAAS, but the game is actually pretty good and the world is amazing.
2.Concord - it had a very solid bone, if only the characters weren't DEI inspired. I still think that's what killed it. Yea the game was pretty barebones, but given time the devs could've added more interesting things to it, and I think they had plans for it too.
3.Dragon Age Veilguard - I had a very good time with this game. The script was god awful, but the actual lore is not that bad and the gameplay was quite fun.
4. Final Fantasy 15 and 16
5. Resident Evil 5 - i have the impression that people dont like this particular entry, and maybe its because its not a horror game? That's probably why I like it so much, its closer to Gears I feel like.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories: Apart from the annoying chase scenes, I find the story and unique atmosphere gripping. In my opinion, one of the best Silent Hill games after parts 1 and 2.

Heavy Rain: Perfect for an evening with friends, everyone plays a character and lets the story take its course in all its many variations. I must have played it more than 10 times with different friends - I can't say that about many other games.

STAR WARS: The Old Republic: For me, the game is equal to a KotoR 3, 8 different storylines, some of which are among the best seen in STAR WARS games (Sith Warrior and Inquisitor), especially now that the game can be played as a solo or co-op RPG.

Alpha Protocol: The best game from Obsidian, unfortunately forgotten and abandoned. A remaster or remake with improved gameplay and graphics would be nice.

Subnautica: Below Zero: This game is generally seen as weak compared to the first Subnautica, but I think it has enough content of its own for about 20-30 hours of fun.

My call outs go to some of Capcom's less appreciated work.

Resident Evil Outbreak 1&2, Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside Chronicles & Dead Aim.
All these Resi spin-offs were not very well received, but I really like them all. Yes, even Dead Aim. Fun times.

Onimusha Tactics (GBA). It ain't Tactics Ogre or FFT, but I enjoyed this lightweight strategy romp in the Onimusha universe.

PN03. Now best known for an ass grinding gif, this weird stylised rhythm shooter was unashamedly its own thing. People say it's shit, but they're wrong. It's class.

Gregory Horror Show. The weirdest little survival horror around.

1) Final Fantasy 13-2: The original game, FF13, poisoned the well so much that people think the entire trilogy sucks.

13-2 is the game I'd recommend anyone play if they are ever curious about this trilogy as it stands far above the others in gameplay quality, fun writing/time traveling shenanigans, and a much better combat system, better puzzles, better level designs, and more. It's everything 13 should have been and it brought back the feeling of playing a PS1/PS2 Square game.

2) Avengers (The Crystal Dynamics game on PS4/XBO):

A fun beat em up/dungeon runner with great gameplay mechanics and good Black Panther DLC. The problem with this game is that it's not what anyone wanted. That didn't mean what's there wasn't fun though.

Probably the funnest Captain America gameplay I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

3) Resident Evil Revelations 2: The real game was always Raid Mode.

Probably the best RE multiplayer mode, stuck in a game with a 'just ok' campaign, standing neck and neck with Mercenaries and Outbreak in terms of fun factor.

4) 007 games on PS360, specifically Blood Stone and Goldeneye: Reloaded

Since every 007 game is always compared to the original Goldeneye, they are usually not given a fair chance. I thought the PS360 games provided fun experiences mostly in a wild ride of action, that matched Daniel Craig's modern version of bond.

5) Metal Gear Solid 5: The story unfortunately leaves you with an 'unfinished' feeling, but I simply can't ignore the gameplay here.

To me this game mastered third person movement for both stealth and action. Nearly any action or combination of actions you could think of doing, Kojipro put it in the game. It controlled like a dream and very, very few games have come even close to matching it's gamefeel…

I'll say one that is evidently hated: Final Fantasy XIII

God tier soundtrack, visuals / art direction and presentation. Even the simple animations in the party menu are stunning.
Game structure is flawed, open world is restricted to Gran Pulse, also combat is good but it's easy aside for the hardest hunts maybe.
Story is not perfect, i don't enjoy all the characters, but great at times. It has life / existential metaphors here and there that if you're an adult you will understand the intent of the writer.
I remembered Lightning and Hope interation being good for example and of course the beautiful CGIs.

XIII-2 seems to be more popular, i simply don't understand.
I thought it was inferior in many ways, QTEs, graphics, story, characters: Caius Ballad is not interesting at all, Snow looks even worse, Noel is ok but Serah?! Give me Lightning and Fang to play anytime.
Soundtrack still great, with Origa contribute, but gets worse tracks like this:

It has some QoL improvements like Historia Crux but that's it.

Anyway i hope SE revisit the trilogy someday. Lightning Returns had a stupid ending and irritating time limit within the story, but i enjoyed some stuff.

Castlevania Legacy of Darkness (N64)
Devs were always apologetic about being new to 3d, but this game runs and play extremely well and feels much more modern than many of its contemporaries. The first campaign (the werewolf story) was great.

And I can't think of any other game rn... I often happen to not like a game thats popular, but games I like pretty much always end up being recognized for their quality.

Sunset Overdrive

I don't think people hate this game, but most people don't even know how good it is. Being a Xbox exclusive hurt it.

For me, it has the better map transversal created by Insomniac. Yeah, I think it is better than Spider-Man games. Also, there's a lot of references/jokes in the game, is one of the most fun games I ever experienced. The gun-gameplay is similar to Ratchet & Clank, but I think is better because of the moving abilities that your character has.

It's a game that definitely deserves a remaster and a launch on PS5. If people give it's a try, I bet most will love it.

see now this list is easier than the opposite list thread.

1) Days Gone
2) Watch Dogs 1
3) Final Fantasy 13/15/16 (yep a two for one, i'm cheating)
4) Ghost Recon Breakpoint (that did deserve the hate at launch)
5) Deathloop
EDIT: bonus one because i know it will rattle cages 6) both Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden west, those games are good, sure they aren't groundbreaking like Sony thinks, the second one shits the bed narrative wise, but as games to play they are both good and fun

(much more than can be added)

Loved my time playing the Earth Defense Force games, specially 6 with it's epic story.

I don't think anybody hates those games, but they sure aren't very popular.

Game is good. I thought Sony was going to launch a remaster or a sequel... 🤷‍♂️ It seems there are some complications behind the IP rights too.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Metroid: Other M, third favorite in the series
LoZ: Skyward Sword, waffles between 1 or 2 on my list of Zelda games
Revelations: Persona, favorite game of all time
Castlevania 64, it's getting more appreciation lately but it was my favorite CV game from day 1
Resident Evil 0, as terrible as the story is I actually love the gameplay so much that it's my 4th favorite RE title.

1.Sonic- Kids convinced themselves it was a good game because they didn't have a Nintendo.

2.Persona- I hate the high school sim part of the games.

3.Gran Turismo- Controls like shit.

4.Dota/league- I hate the controls and the gameplay in general.

5.elder scrolls- I hate melee first person combat.

Edit: I got this thread backwards, whatever. Hate, hate, hate

I really liked the two Caligula effect games. They reviewed kinda low and don't seem to beloved by the general public, but I thought they were fun with interesting mechanics, stories, and characters.

Metroid Other M
Final Fantasy XIII
Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil Code Veronica
The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword
Castlevania Lords of Shadow
Dead Space 3
Sonic Lost World

Always feels like I have to prepare for war when I say I like these

I don't think that everybody hates FF XV when you see that it sold more than 10 millions copies.

Or maybe this is a thread about games "neogaf hates" ? In this case, FF XV probably qualifies yes.

TLOU2-More divisive but it is one of my favorites. I love the two sides type of story and it sets the gold standard for realistic and gritty combat.

GTAIV-People have largely turned around on it but I loved it even when it was cool to hate it and Yahtzee was making videos talking about how Saints Row is better. It is so immersive and the best video game version of New York created.

The Horizon series-The second one kind of fell off at the end of the story but it gets too much crap for not being Elden Ring

Personally for me, as someone who played FF13 trilogy literally last year instead of when it first came out, it's because every. single. main. character. in the original FF13 are written and are directed to act as annoyingly non-human as possible, except for maybe 1 character who gets less screen time. Some of them will say nonsensical things within relation to the plot, throughout the entire game.

It is one of the prettiest FF with one of the weakest stories in all of FF.

And considering that FF13 put nearly all of it's eggs into the story and cutscenes whereas 13-2 focused on improving many other aspects including giving you side content, monster collection, and multiple scenarios and scenario endings, including wacky ones, it was very clear that FF 13-2 was being created to appeal to people who liked a more PS1/PS2 era Square experience.

While I can agree that 13-2's villain was on the weaker side, the rest of the cast were improved from the previous game and they were written and acted a bit better to feel more relatable and grounded compared to 13. Even the story was written in a way where they are not stupidly defining convoluted in-universe terms with more convoluted in-universe terms. I mean for crying out loud the game fixed Vanille, and she was arguably the most annoying one in 13.

Even though there are those who like 13-2 more like you've stated, the majority of gamers dislike the FF13 trilogy as a whole. They dislike what it represents for Final Fantasy as a whole, and they dislike what it eventually led to, which was FF15. The reason I think 13-2 suffers from disdain is pretty much 13's fault. It is a good, fun experience sandwiched between a bad beginning and a bad finishing.

I'll go balls deep:
Babylons Fall
Suicide Squad KTJL
The Order 1886
Callisto Protocol
Resident Evil Revelations 2

GAF may hate but all of these were fun games.

Madden: The biggest one most "gamers" not only hate (despite most of them not having played for years if ever) but actively tell you not to buy it. Sorry but I am going to buy and enjoy this game every year for hundreds of hours.
AC: Shadows: Did not like any of the RPG AC games, this one I liked because of both protagonists and the fact that while it was still very big, it was not as massive and daunting as Odyssey or Valhalla. Some of the best stealth in the entire series and Yasuke is also very fun to play as.
FF XVI: This is more of a Neogaf thing than real hate, but this game is incredible. Not a traditional RPG more of an action game, but the world, story, voice acting, and music are all incredible.
Days Gone: Very fun open world game with a unique horde mechanic and a surprisingly good story.

It's a shame that so many people let real world never-ending culture wars stop them from liking games like AC: Shadows, Days Gone, Stellar Blade, and Hogwarts: Legacy. Hell some cretins even let it keep them away from a masterpiece like Horizon Forbidden West. I did not put that on the list because that is beloved everywhere but here lol.

If a game is mentioned a bunch in this thread, like FF13, then should it be in this thread? Clearly people like it. Anyway I'll name Civilization Beyond Earth, people just did not give it a chance because it was Civ 5 in space instead of AC2. But it's still very good.

Alone in the Dark 2007.

It was way-way-way ahead of it's time and deserved some sort of VR remaster.

The bulk of ideas were never meant to work with a classic controller though.

No Man's Sky

My son, daughter, and I all rocked identical characters and ships, just to mess with random players in the anomaly. We'll pull the ol' "didn't I just see you walk by and do the same emote?" routine in-game, like intergalactic deja vu.

We even built a big ass tower maze around a portal hoping to trap an unsuspecting traveler for laughs. Too bad it was destroyed by the Origins update before someone fell into it. We haven't been back since.

No, FFXV is a case of buyer's remorse. Look at the effect 13 and 15 had on the FF community overall, to the point where it scared people away from whatever came next.

Square Enix themselves were even cautious about the next entry, handing it to the FF14 director because they considered that a safe bet, since FF14 was making a good amount of money.

I have to give 15 credit for having a hell of a marketing campaign though, which helped boost it's sales.
