5 video games or franchises everyone hates, but you think is good

Final Fantasy 13
- audiovisual masterpiece
- ultra high level of polish
- very linear and grindy
- subpar combat and story

Battlefield Bad Company 2
- my favorite BF game
- fully destroyable maps
- no jets, smaller scale
- PCMR hated it because of console "influence"

Castlevania Lords of Shadows
- incredible atmosphere
- just beautiful to look at
- linear action adventure
- no metroidvania

Naruto to Boruto Shinobi Striker
- best Naruto game in my opinion
- amazing combat system
- to this day I can't understand the bad review scores

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodhunt
- addictive fast-paced gameplay
- chaotic finales but very rewarding
- never got real traction for whatever reason

Duke Nukem Forever wasn't awful and I had good fun. You could tell they glued some things together to release the game in any form, but a lot of the levels and jokes were actually really good.

Skyward Sword, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks
RE5, RE6
AC Valhalla

So I wanted to do the inverse of Heimdall_Xtreme Heimdall_Xtreme thread, but instead of focusing on what we hate, how about games we like? I know in my own experience I've played games that get a lot of hate, but have had a lot of fun with them. However, 15 answers seemed like a bit too much, so I lowered it down to just 5 choices. Here's some of my choices.

1. Final Fantasy XVI - I understand why people wouldn't necessarily love this game. I have my own issues with it as well. Playing it, the combat was definitely the worst part for me, but I still found the writing to be engaging at times. It dragged in some spots, and the side quests were pretty bad, but I still wouldn't call it one of the worst games ever like some people seem to think.

2. Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League - personally, even this answer surprises me sometimes. Normally I hate live services games, and I even hated the game when it first launched and tried playing it. About a year after launch though, I picked it up for $5 on sale and gave it another try, and found myself having a good time. The combat, and traversal aspect of the gameplay finally clicked with me. If I had friends to play with, I could see myself having a lot more fun with it, but even as a single player experience, I just found I enjoyed playing through the story, and early seasons for a good amount of time. Worth the $5 for sure.

3. Lost Planet 3 - I remember always hearing "oh, it's a shitty sequel made by a B tier western studio"...and it's kinda my favorite of the series. I really liked this game. I thought the characters and writing were good, and the gameplay was fun. It visually looked pretty cool to me at the time it came out too.

4. Gal*Gun - Oh yeah, there I am...I'm a pervert! Stupid lame pervert liking these games, har har. But ya know what? I don't care lol I'm too old to care if people think that of me. I've never grown out of pervert humor, and I'm not ashamed of it. The thing is though, the Gal*Gun games...they're pervy in the same way a teen sex comedy that they used to make is. That's why I find them amusing. I like the absurdity of the concept of having to literally fight off girls who are in love with you because you got hit with too many cupid arrows. It's silly, and fun. The actual gameplay can be pretty fun I honestly think too. Gal*Gun 2 especially is fun because it has VR support on PC, and I found it to be one of the more fun games to play in VR because you're looking around all the environment having to shoot. The only problem is the PC version is janky enough that it sometimes just doesn't run for me. The series also led to a great spin-off series with great 2D art with the Gal Guardians 2d action games.

5. Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - so this is a tricky one because I don't think everyone hates it since it sold well, but the conversation of how bad it looked and performed on Switch 1 really overshadowed it a lot. Even I agree, it ran like dogshit when I played it on Switch 1...however, beyond that...I really liked the game overall. I liked the ideas they came up with, and I liked their attempts to freshen up the formula for the series. It's not perfect, and I think a franchise that makes as much money as Pokemon can afford to put damn voice acting in their games already, but it was still a real good game in the series overall.

Honorable mentions of some titles that I think GAF hates...but are still pretty popular if sales are any indication. Fortnite, and Borderlands. I still haven't played Borderlands 3, so I can't say if I'd also hate it, but I love the series before that, and don't understand the rapid hate it gets on here.
😃👍🏻

Thanks for the topic...I was going to say the same thing, but yeah, let's do it.

Personally for me, as someone who played FF13 trilogy literally last year instead of when it first came out, it's because every. single. main. character. in the original FF13 are written and are directed to act as annoyingly non-human as possible, except for maybe 1 character who gets less screen time. Some of them will say nonsensical things within relation to the plot, throughout the entire game.

It is one of the prettiest FF with one of the weakest stories in all of FF.

And considering that FF13 put nearly all of it's eggs into the story and cutscenes whereas 13-2 focused on improving many other aspects including giving you side content, monster collection, and multiple scenarios and scenario endings, including wacky ones, it was very clear that FF 13-2 was being created to appeal to people who liked a more PS1/PS2 era Square experience.

While I can agree that 13-2's villain was on the weaker side, the rest of the cast were improved from the previous game and they were written and acted a bit better to feel more relatable and grounded compared to 13. Even the story was written in a way where they are not stupidly defining convoluted in-universe terms with more convoluted in-universe terms. I mean for crying out loud the game fixed Vanille, and she was arguably the most annoying one in 13.

Even though there are those who like 13-2 more like you've stated, the majority of gamers dislike the FF13 trilogy as a whole. They dislike what it represents for Final Fantasy as a whole, and they dislike what it eventually led to, which was FF15. The reason I think 13-2 suffers from disdain is pretty much 13's fault. It is a good, fun experience sandwiched between a bad beginning and a bad finishing.
Opinions, i'm not saying XIII is perfect but that are things that are clearly better than XIII-2. It got bashed at the time because for the most part it's hand holding, and open world was the thing.
I said i didn't like all the characters the same way but if Vanille is annoying, what to say about Serah & Snow..

I've seen that PS1/2 argument with FF7 Rebirth, which it's curious because FF7 remakes are using the same time travel plot.
It was a good excuse to let us replay stuff, Historia Crux fixed the criticism of not being able to go back in XIII past a certain point.

Good might be a stretch, but I had some fun with Metal Gear Survive. Part of it was playing in the Fox Engine again. I'd say it's better than its' reputation.

I also had a bunch of fun with Street Fighter Ex 3 on the PS2, but maybe I just enjoyed beating the crap out of enemies during the interactive credits.

Dead Space 3:
I get it's a complete departure from what made the first 2 games great. But as a Co-op shooter with an Aliens vibe I had a blast playing through this with a friend.

Residen Evil 5:
Pretty much the same as Dead Space 3. Not a great Resident Evil but as a co-op shooter it's a blast.

Lair:
Is infamous for sucking and killing the studio. But I had fun with it once they patched in normal controls. There's good mission variety, the art direction is nice, the music is amazing and the story was surprisingly engaging. The gameplay isn't that great and you can notice they simplified a lot of the mechanics to work with motion controls, but it's still decent and has some cool ideas.

DMC: Devil May Cry.
I still prefer DMC3 and 4 over it, and I don't like what they did to the characters. But if you just take it for what it si instead of constantly comparing it to the OG, it's pretty fun. I remember getting it on sale intending to hate play it, but then quickly having to admit that I was actually having fun. I specially like the levels and environments, they really stand out when you compare them to something like DMC5 where half the game feels like it takes place inside a colonoscopy.

Playstation All Stars Battle Royale:

I mean...it wasn't nearly as good as Smash but it wasn't terrible. I actually had fun playing it with some friends every now and then.
And unlike Smash (at least at the time) the online multiplayer was actually playable, which was a big plus.

Watch_Dogs 1
Star Wars Outlaws
Sudeki
Mafia III
Forspoken

Honorable mention to 2025's potential GOTY MindsEye

When i tell you i consumed everything FFXV related i'm not joking. I played the game after all the patches but still...i saw the movie, the anime, played the main game, the DLCs, saw the demo on youtube cause it was something that wasn't part of the game. I went all over the chronological order and did the job.

You would think this was some sort of masterpiece but it was "just" FFXV.

Need for Speed The Run is fucking awesome, it's a Call of Duty campaign on wheels, which is so unique and different, and is executed well. Sadly it came from a time of people judging games for what they weren't, rather than what they were.

Ah, good choices.
You can see why Other M was hated, but it's a decent game.
SS is actually a great game.
Some of the other M complaints are valid and some were nonsense but at the end of the day it was a game that should never have been made because the amount of people who could appreciate the whacked out mix of ingredients that went into it was never going to be very big. I'm just happy that it did because it was a game absolutely made for my sensibilities.

I don't think that everybody hates FF XV when you see that it sold more than 10 millions copies.

Or maybe this is a thread about games "neogaf hates" ? In this case, FF XV probably qualifies yes.
Indeed. It's maybe the prism of Neogaf but I have the feeling the general feeling about the game is not so good.
But with time it maybe got redemption.

We will have to agree to disagree. I just don't see what you see in it's story and level design (or lack thereof). Even the combat, which is the thing that 13 fans tend to champion over it's story, is done much better in 13-2, especially when you consider 13 has a secret time-based fail state even when you're doing good in a battle and are almost close to beating a boss fight. To me that's just horrible design and a waste of time.
I said i didn't like all the characters the same way but if Vanille is annoying, what to say about Serah & Snow..
Snow isn't even a main character of 13-2. He has a small section of the game dedicated to him in which they tell you what he's up to, and then he promptly leaves in a dumb way, but the difference is that the devs of 13-2 know he's dumb and treats him as such, with Serah even shaking her head at the things he's saying and his 'hero' shtick. He ends up having kind of a funny side story and Serah is like 'yeah, that's my goofball husband for ya 🤷‍♂️'

FF13 treats him seriously. Lightning Returns also treats him seriously. That's my issue. Both the first game and the third game are too far up their own asses to realize how silly of a character he is and how typical his dialogue comes across. That's what I mean by the game reminding my of older Square games. They knew when to be more lighthearted.

Noel's voice acting and story were good to me and much better than anything presented in 13. Serah was better written as well didn't meander with long speeches about L'Cie and Fal'Cie like the entire cast did in the previous game.

I don't know in what world anyone can reasonably think that Serah from 13-2 is more annoying/grating on the ears than 13's Vanille. Vanille was the epitome of 'cutesy baby anime voice' gone wrong.

I don't think it's wrong to like 13 more than 13-2, I just don't think 13-2 needs to be shoved down to prop up 13, and it doesn't help 13 because once someone tries both games out they realize exactly what I did last year, with 13's long list of what not to like, compared to 13-2.

Resident Evil 6 in Coop*

If you have a friend or a sibling who can go through all the campaigns with you, this game is actually quite fun.

Also, before playing you'd have to seek a few guides as to how to actually play the game, all the maneuvers and dive moves and all of that, since the game doesn't explain anything.

With those two requirements filled, RE6 is a very fun game to play through.

I bought 13 day zero in 2009. 100% 13-2 too.
I never play FF in english, only in 12 where it's great imo.
