How do you qualify as a new artist? Would putting out a mixtape qualify you or would you have to put out your first major label album?

teh grammz. for once i don't care who wins. i can't believe there isn't a rap performance though. hell i'd even settle for Lupe.

"For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist."

So essentially the first record that you release that has success is the year that you are eligible for Best New Artist.

Your album that basically puts you on the radar. Usually your first major label album. Sometimes second or third.

Relevance is essentially whether you music sells/if people like it. Sales is one of the FEW means by which you can measure music subjectively.

That's just silly, and basically forces you to admit that "Baby" and "Gangnam Style" are the best songs of all time.

Anyways, Grammys are clearly just about reflecting the opinion of the masses. Hipsters need to relax, no one cares how refined your tastes are and that's not the point of the show.

I was just watching the video with ODB at the 1998 Grammy's.

"Wu-Tang is for the kids." Was he high when he did that?

Why should relevance be a factor? especially when you're supposed to be comparing art.

To be considered by the Academy, your album must be distributed by a recognized independent distributor or a label. That stipulation isn't much different from the rules for the Oscars or the DICEs.

Even still, there are so many songs released by so many artists that it's impossible for the Recording Academy members to listen to every single song that's eligible for a nomination. Having "buzz" and public and media recognition behind you work is essential for getting a nomination.

Thats not what I said at all.

In general, if you make music the public wants it will sell. If you don't it will not.

Why would you deserve a nomination if you can't even sell records?

So, Kendrick Lamar wasn't even nominated for it? That seems kind of crazy.

Nevermind, album came out too late

I totally agree that high selling artists deserve the noms, I misunderstood and thought you were saying sales are a way of measuring quality.

Yes for Drake winning Best Rap Album

He can now throw away the paper with his Grammy speech that he talked about in "Aston Martin Music".

Will wait anxiously for YouTube video of Chuck D + LL Cool J + Tom Morello + Travis Barker performance.

I mean if you're taking your pick of all rap albums released in 2012 I'd go for Schoolboy Q or Kendrick or Killer Mike hell even Nas. Didn't know people still cared about The Roots.

I think people care about The Roots now more than ever before since they are the house band on Fallon.

The Roots' "Undun" was pretty good too (just not the best imo).

Kendrick's album came out too late so he is ineligible.
