55th Annual GRAMMYS | OT

Prince should present all the awards, play the half time at every Super Bowl, and be in every comedy skit that involves basketball and pancakes.

It appears white artists have taken every major Grammy. :(

At least Drake won rap album of the year and Kanye continues his march to be the most Grammified person of all time. OF ALL TIME!!!

Is Grammy's in your face pushing of hashtag Grammys super embarrassing or is it just me?

It's still run by a bunch of old record execs who were monetarily dismantled by the internet, and thus, fought against it for years and have just started to try to understand it.

Hence, the ham-fisted approach to social media.

I'm already disappointed for James Blake and Kendrick Lamar getting snubbed next year. It's going to happen.

Edit: Also see that Japandroids were not nominated for Celebration Rock, which I thought was one of the better rock albums to come out in the last couple of years. Oh Grammys, never change.

Kendrick has Dre backing him, he'll get some props.

James Blake depends on if he can release an album that isn't too experimental so that people can grow to love it a bit quicker this time.

Jayden James?

I missed Prince. He didn't perform did he? I'd kick myself if I missed that.

I guess it was a decent show. The winners all seemed like safe picks though.

The Lumineers and Mumford and Sons should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Fleet Foxes.
I love how Fleet Foxes have put out 4 quality records (2 EPs and 2 LPs) and yet don't have as much recognition as Mumford & Sons or The Lumineers.

Then again, the Grammys idea of recognition is silly anyway. When Fleet Foxes came to Boston, I went to that show and it was sold out and the crowd was going nuts.

I just appreciate their approach to folk. Something about Mumford in particular just screams "mediocre" to me.

Fuck outta here. Their self-titled album is a 10/10. One of the best albums from the Naughts.
Oh yeah, the band is probably a 9/10 considering that everything they've put out is good, even the first EP which was supposed to be the crap they gave away at early performances.

I try to mention Fleet Foxes to anyone and they shrug it off. Mention Mumford & Sons and they lap it up. That's the frustrating thing about music. Tastes aside, my recommendation from the heart is less valid than the media's spoon-feeding approach.

Fleet Foxes is a 7/10 band.

Been to their shows twice and they are SUPERB and amazing. Sound just as good as they do on their records which is no easy feat.

It was thoroughly "pretty good". Nothing too remarkable. That said it was very re-listenable so I got a lot of mileage out of it for what it is. And anyways 7/10 is a good score so nothing to complain about.

They have some great songs and just ok albums.

Helplessness Blues is an "all the way through" album, I think more so than even the self-titled. It flows perfectly. If that's an "ok album" then I wish more artists made "ok albums."

No focus on singles there. Just pure listenability, and a nice journey from track 1 to track 12.

Eh, opinions.

Interesting how we're talking about Fleet Foxes. Were they at the Grammys or something? I didn't watch. It is interesting that people always try to draw a parallel between them and more mainstream folk music like Mumford. There's no real comparison if you have ears.

Well M&S is trash, of course everything by FF is better. And I suppose if you're only listening to a certain selection of artists then FF could sound really amazing.

I sound pretentious but it's hard not to, lol. And I have nothing against FF like I said, 7/10 is a compliment. Helplessness Blues was in my top 50 albums of 2011. They're definitely a good band.

Being totally sincere and serious, please post groups that you rate higher than Fleet Foxes.

There are so many great bands out there, including FF. Let's not put anyone on a pedestal, eh?

Let us all enjoy the mere fact that we're about on the same page with this one band in particular. I'm good with that. :)

What song was performed?

Anything else worth trying to watch on youtube?

Honestly I couldn't even tell you what the song was. It had a P.E. chorus and there was a quick bridge of No Sleep To Brooklyn as a tribute to MC A, but I really couldn't even hear what LL was saying.

Edit: The performances were pretty lackluster for the most part. The acts varied so wildly that without knowing what you're into it's difficult. There seemed to be a lot of Country this year though. And avoid Frank Ocean's performance even if you like his stuff. It was just bad.

Well I don't think very highly of indie rock so you might not think my taste is that great. I dislike The Xx, Grizzly Bear, things like that. And I would rate Coldplay over FF, so again, you may not care for my tastes. Very good bands that fall vaguely (and I mean very vaguely) into that sphere would be Mark Kozelek, Thee Oh Sees, Paul Cary, Sic Alps, Shugo Tokumaru, Over the Rhine, etc. In general the artists that I hold in very high esteem tend to fall more into avant-garde and techno kinds of things.

Channel Orange was easily better than all of the album of the year noms (Blunderbuss is the only one that's close). I wasn't the biggest fan of Orange, but Pyramids alone is way better than Mumford.

Will the performances be uploaded. Need to see JT and the bad Ocean performance.

My thoughts:

I can't stand Katy Perry, she's such an annoying twit. But my God is she fucking fine. Grrrrr.....

Frank Ocean laid an egg tonight. Wow, fail.

JT looked great. I liked that new single of his

LL's performance was hype, but come on now. This brotha hasn't had a studio album in how long? Jay-Z is the king of Hip Hop and has been for some time. So long as LL doesn't try to do some Canibus shit he should be okay. Respect the throne.

Not cool that they didn't televise any of the dance/electronic music categories. Skrillrex won three Grammys, and got no props.

Jennifer Lopez......DAMN, SON. That dress was hot.

Adele is gorgeous and beautiful. Haters gonna hate.

The Bob Marley tribute was very nice. Sting still has it.

American Idol represented. Carrie Underwood AND Kelly Clarkson took home awards.

Good show overall.

First time in years and years that I've watched the Grammy's, saw a performance and said, "this is fucking awesome." And that's what happened last night as I watched The Black Keys with Preservation Hall & Dr. John. Again, fucking awesome.
