Yup, my favorite of the live action nominees. Caught them all at a festival a few weeks ago.

Ryan is the best animated short, if someone can find it online.

That was scary...

Ibarretxe is a Basque name... and there's something about "Vasco" at the beginning. Makes me wonder if the ETA was involved somehow.

It goes from charming to disturbing. . .

She sees the cell phones in a pile on the floor. And consider how weird everyone is acting even when she walks in. Of course she knows something is wrong.

Anybody know if it's possible to get this on DVD (or if it will be possible)? If you enjoy short films, are there compilations that usually come out or do you have to hunt down each and every one of them?

Ryan was really stupid.

I certainly hope people don't deprive themselves of seeing Ryan because of our resident Jimmy Olson's lazy dismissal.

Haunting subject matter and a wild CG technique (all done by hand) used to tell it.

CG that is "all done by hand"?? Huh?

...no mo-cap or rotoscoping, supposedly. Shall I say "artist manipulation" instead?

From the official site:

http://www.nfb.ca/ryan/

Ryan was created and animated without the use of live action footage, rotoscoping or motion capture...but instead from an original, personal, hand animated three-dimensional world which Chris calls 'psychological realism'.

I like the premise of an a new artist interviewing and old artist and showcasing some of his work, but the narration was poor, the style was hard on the eyes, and the interview wasn't particularly interesting.

I liked what little there was of Hardball, though.
