If I can find a (50 or 60 inch) DLP at a price I like I'll be in that statistic.

The TV will seem like a bargain when you see how you are getting raped by your cable bill every month.

I don't even get fucking HDTV and I already pay like $115 a month to Comcast. :(

Darien, how much are you looking to spend?

You can get 50-inch HD3 DLPs for around 2K and 61-inchers for around 2300

Keep in mind this is the HD3 chip though, which I am not a big fan of...

Doing a quick search, it seems you can get a Sammy HLM507W 50-inch set for around 1600USD:

http://store.futureusa.net/sahl50widlph.html

And you can get a 61-inch HLM617W for $2100:

http://store.futureusa.net/sahl61widlph1.html

Again, all these sets have the HD3 chip, which is a .55 inch DMD which only has 640 collumns and 720 rows of mirrors....

Through "wobulation" (1/2 pixel shift @ 120Hz) you get 1280 x 720 resolution, but it is not REAL 720p, IMO....

To get a DLP set with REAL native 720p, it will need to have the HD2 or HD2+ DMD and TVs with those are somewhat more expensive....

If you want something really kewl, you could get one of those Sammy HLP5085W pedestal DLP sets:

emartus_1836_4392483

The TV has the HD2+ chip (the best 720p DMD TI currently offers) and will set you back $2200 for the 50 incher:

The best deal I have seen for a large DLP HD2+ set is for a refurb 62-inch Toshiba 62HMX84, which is $2348 @ refurbelectronics.com:

KLee, where's my 3-chip DLP? I want it now, damnit!

Nerevar, 3-chip HD2 DLPs are too rich for even my blood:

Really not crazy about these 20K and up 3-chip DLP projectors because they are only 720p!!!

If I were to spend 20K for a projector (and I'm not) I would prefer something that is 1080p like a Sony Qualia 004, a JVC DLA-HD2K or perhaps one of those fancy Faroudja DILA-1080P combo units if I was really drunk that day :)

I already payed nearly $10K for a 720p front projector.....not gonna do that again!!!

I think I should also point out the Sharp XV-Z2000, which is a 2006 model, has the HD2+ chip (Toshiba FPTV is an HD2 2003 model), streets for about 3K and will run rings around my HD1 Marantz VP12-S1.....

So what's the news on those nano TVs? Will they be out (and cheap) by, say this time 2007?

Yeah, I would hope so....

We haven't heard anything from Motorola concerning NEDs lately but Samsung had prototype 38-inch carbon nanotube TVs up and running in November and Sony has gone on record as saying they are developing CNT FEDs too, plus the Tiwanese gov. is investing in CNT-FED development so nano-TVs are coming from a variety of sources..

The first FEDs to market will be Toshiba's 50-inch 1080p SEDs at the end of this year, though they are not based on carbon nanotubes and they won't be cheap at first...

The performance of these early Toshiba SEDs are mindblowing (greater than 8600:1 contrast ratio, 12mm thickness, power consumption a fraction of plasmas, and, best of all, CRT-type shadow detail/blacks) so I could not imagine what an actual CNT FED will be like for outright performance....

The ones to watch, IMO are Motorola because they have spent the most amount of money, will be licensing NED tech (so anyone can use it) and *THEY* are the ones saying they will be cheap (as in 1K for a 50-inch HD-NED)....

The process for mfng FEDs are inherently inexpensive once you figure out how to do it (like Toshiba has)....

That's our price point... we are going to get it as our Christmas present to ourselves this year....

If you can swing it, I would go for that 62-inch HD2+ Toshiba for $2400

Oh we can swing it... It has to be at least 60inch to replace the regular 60inch projection we have in our family room.

Well that narrows it down to the Sammy HLM617W and the Tosh....let me look around a bit to see if I can find any other DLP deals.....so you want:

60 inches minimum

DLP tech

$2500 or less

Is this all correct??

i love the Samsung Capt. Kirk... and the HD2+ chip on my friend's Mitsu is awesome (when the damn set works right)... but Plasmas are dropping in price fast, might have to give up a few inches to go with that for my next tv.

BUT ENOUGH OF THAT!!!

I also Highly, Highly reccomend you at least demo/check out the JVC HD-ILA RPTVs...particularly the 61-inch HD-61Z575 (HDMI in, no ATSC tuner)

All the other TVs use one-chip DLP technology....basically, the lightsource projects light that bounces off the DMD mirrors and then goes through a (rapidly spinning) color wheel with, depending on the TV, five, six or seven segments (RGB+cyan, magenta, yellow and one other I cant remember on the 7 segment wheel).....this is necessary with a one-chip device because they can't display RGB on screen at the same time, hence the colorwheel...

The big downside to 1-chip DLP is the fact some people are suceptible to a phenomenon called the "RAINBOW EFFECT" where trails of the missing 2 colors can be seen in fast moving video objects (like some video games, for example)......

3 chip DLPs solve this problem, but because of a deal Texas Instruments did with Christie Digital, Runco and Vidikron, only D-Cinema theaters(which used 3-chip DLPs) can recieve the latest DLP technology so the only consumer 3-chip devices are 20 thou and up!!!

Going back to the JVC sets, they use technology called D-ILA (which stands for Direct-drive Image Light Amplifier).....D-ILA is just JVCs name for a projection tech known as LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) and is also called SXRD by Sony......SXRD, D-ILA, HD-ILA all =LCOS...

At any rate, compared to 1-chip DLP, LCOS technolgy is harder to manufacturer(so they were more expensive at first), is less mature (newer tech) have somewhat less contrast performance and are almost, but not quite, as bright as some DLP sets...

In every other area LCOS tech *SMOKES* DLP tech....

LCOS have the highest pixel fillrate of any micordisplay tech (LCD/DLP/LCOS) LCDs have ~55-60% fillrate, DLP has ~85% fillrate, while LCOS have 92% and better fillrate....so no "screendoor effect" no matter how close to the screen you get....because of the fillrate, LCOS displays have an inky smooth "analog-like" quality to the image that many discribe as "filmlike".....DLP can be discribed as slightly more vivid or "digital-esque", if you get my drift...

The best display in the world, the $25K Sony Qualia 004 SXRD, uses LCOS tech....it really is superior projection tech to DLP, IMO...this coming from a person who owns a high-end DLP projection product..

Furthermore, JVC HD-ILA RPTVs use 3-chip technology (Red, Green and Blue 720p chips) so no rainbows ever.....

YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT HD-ILA @ JVC'S WEBSITE

I am not saying you will like LCOS better than DLP....as I said before, I have a DLP projector and enjoy playing games on it every day, and you will probably be pretty happy with DLP too, if that is what you finally decide on....

You owe it to yourself to at least take your PS2/XBOX/GC/whatever along with you to your local HD-ILA dealer and compare it to DLP with your own eyes (just remember there are several different DLP chips out there, HD2+, HD2 and what I like to call "Half DLP" the HD3)....

BTW, you can get the 61-inch JVC HD-61Z575 for $2550:

Awesome Klee thanks, this gives me and the missus some good data to go over.

Klee, would the Sammy HLM507W 50-inch be a good purchase for next-gen systems? It doesn't look to have an HDMI out, and before I put down the money, I wanted to ask you, because I know you are very knowledgable in this area...

No prob...

You did check out my rainbow effect link right?

Yes, it's funny I remember when we first had a DLP demo'd for us at Best Buy way back... they demo'd an LCD, a Plasma, mentioned the good and bad of those then demo'd a DLP and had nothing but good to say about it... guess DLP has it's own share of issues...
