All the other TVs use one-chip DLP technology....basically, the lightsource projects light that bounces off the DMD mirrors and then goes through a (rapidly spinning) color wheel with, depending on the TV, five, six or seven segments (RGB+cyan, magenta, yellow and one other I cant remember on the 7 segment wheel).....this is necessary with a one-chip device because they can't display RGB on screen at the same time, hence the colorwheel...
The big downside to 1-chip DLP is the fact some people are suceptible to a phenomenon called the
"RAINBOW EFFECT" where trails of the missing 2 colors can be seen in fast moving video objects (like some video games, for example)......
3 chip DLPs solve this problem, but because of a deal Texas Instruments did with Christie Digital, Runco and Vidikron, only D-Cinema theaters(which used 3-chip DLPs) can recieve the latest DLP technology so the only consumer 3-chip devices are 20 thou and up!!!
Going back to the JVC sets, they use technology called D-ILA (which stands for Direct-drive Image Light Amplifier).....D-ILA is just JVCs name for a projection tech known as LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) and is also called SXRD by Sony......SXRD, D-ILA, HD-ILA all =LCOS...
At any rate, compared to 1-chip DLP, LCOS technolgy is harder to manufacturer(so they were more expensive at first), is less mature (newer tech) have somewhat less contrast performance and are almost, but not quite, as bright as some DLP sets...
In every other area LCOS tech *SMOKES* DLP tech....
LCOS have the highest pixel fillrate of any micordisplay tech (LCD/DLP/LCOS) LCDs have ~55-60% fillrate, DLP has ~85% fillrate, while LCOS have 92% and better fillrate....so no "screendoor effect" no matter how close to the screen you get....because of the fillrate, LCOS displays have an inky smooth "analog-like" quality to the image that many discribe as "filmlike".....DLP can be discribed as slightly more vivid or "digital-esque", if you get my drift...
The best display in the world, the $25K Sony Qualia 004 SXRD, uses LCOS tech....it really is superior projection tech to DLP, IMO...this coming from a person who owns a high-end DLP projection product..
Furthermore, JVC HD-ILA RPTVs use 3-chip technology (Red, Green and Blue 720p chips) so no rainbows ever.....
YOU CAN READ MORE ABOUT HD-ILA @ JVC'S WEBSITE
I am not saying you will like LCOS better than DLP....as I said before, I have a DLP projector and enjoy playing games on it every day, and you will probably be pretty happy with DLP too, if that is what you finally decide on....
You owe it to yourself to at least take your PS2/XBOX/GC/whatever along with you to your local HD-ILA dealer and compare it to DLP with your own eyes (just remember there are several different DLP chips out there, HD2+, HD2 and what I like to call "Half DLP" the HD3)....
BTW, you can get the 61-inch JVC HD-61Z575 for $2550:
