First of all, New York has a Wolf Conservation Center! And secondly, their wolf population just grew, when eight new very rare Mexican wolf pups were born on Sunday. Just LOOK AT THEM!
The litter is living 45 miles outside of Manhattan at the Center’s facility in South Salem, and according to reports "they could aid the federal program that has reintroduced the endangered species to the wild." Last year it was believed that only 50 Mexican wolves were living in the wild in the U.S., so these pups are rare... and were adorably described as being no bigger than a potato.
Peter Siminski, coordinator of the Mexican wolf program for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, says, "It's always a good day when we learn of the birth of an endangered species.
Eight new pups in a world population of around 366 is a 2 percent increase." The hope is to one day introduce these animals into the wild, but in the meantime, they promise to provide the public with webcam footage on their website—"We'll remain glued to our eight webcams to watch the new parents care for their young and the arrival of more potential pups in the coming weeks."
