Updates to Steam have been released. The update will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. This release includes a number of very specific CPU and memory footprint optimizations brought over from the Half-Life 2: XBOX development codebase. The release also includes all of the engine groundwork to enable the Day of Defeat: Source launch that will happen Monday, September 26 at 3:00 PDT.

Woo!

That's something I like to hear! Valve optimizing our computer's performance. Now if only they'd start CS: Source on the Xbox 360 I'd be one happy guy!

Awesome. The PC version is actually benefitting from a console port.

Don't do it!

Apparently it's causing CS:S and all mods to stop working.

The HL2DM servers are all fucked. 30 frag limit and constant rotation between overwatch and lockdown... :-<

Cog... it sounds like you might need more RAM. Smooth as silk here and my comp is a good 3 years old.

Thanks for the advice, but I don't think that's the problem. ;)

I have 1.5 GB of RAM, that should be plenty.

The stutter/hitching bug is a well known documented Steam "feature".

Not everyone gets it apparently, some users don't notice it - or they attribute it to something else like their video card not being fast enough (seen from personal experience).

Hell, go read the tweakguides.com guide. He got it as well, and he's no dummy.

Great, here he goes with the "Valve knows about the hitching and refuses to fix it!" conspiracy theory again.

Batshit insane. Remember that one?

Please Manabyte, spare me. Living in denial doesn't make your fantasies real. Mmmmkay?

I don't think it is a case of "refusing to fix" so much as a case of "CAN'T fix it"...

Fortunately, I no longer have those problems with my PC (though it's too late, as you can't get that first experience back...).

I updated and now CSS, which used to run at 50-60 fps, has literally dropped down in to single digits, 9.25 fps according to the video stress test.

Optimizations ahoy!

I already run the game at pretty minimal settings. I don't care so much about the visuals as I just want a smooth playing experience. I'm re-installing DoD and waiting for these kinks to get ironed out, which better be bloody quickly.

The audio hitching in the game seems to come and go with different patches in my case.

When I first got the game, it ran smooth as silk. Two patches later, constant pausing. A few patches later, pausing gone. Unfortunately, after a reformat, I ended up reinstalling Steam only to get the latest version that still pauses. I'm just hoping one of these patches will work, and then I'll just turn off the auto update.

Well, shit, I just tried it and the audio hitching is back. Prior to this patch, it has been fine, but now it's back. >_<

I wonder if these optimizations were done to try to eliminate the hitching in the Xbox game.

I am so gonna laugh my ass off if it hitches on the Xbox.

Valve knew about this before the game was released. I'm convinced of it. They are just lying to everyone about it IMO. No developer has such a widespread problem and doesn't notice it.

According to the Steam forums, it has made it much worse for everyone.

See, prior to this patch, the hitching had all but disappeared...but now it's back.

I'm sure the XBOX version will be fine, as it won't have to deal with the compressed GCF files...

If you use GCFscape and extract everything, will the game reference those files or will steam automatically replace the files that you've moved/deleted? A lot of people extracted the PAK3 files to get Doom III to run better

This update has fucked everything up for me again. I give up (well I had done anyway) Wankers! I just about got Counter Strike playing fairly decently. A shambles really.

That guide also has a number of steps you can take to eliminate the problem.

Started up HL2, and the loading times seemed to go faster, but then I discovered why...

I'll try to lower the settings, but this sucks! Never had any problems with HL2 at all, not until now. Hopefully they'll fix it soon enough.

BTW, I have an ATi Radeon 9800 PRO 128 MB.

Actually this patch seems to have reduced the hitching for me and the load times seem faster as well.
That's the problem with these patches...

Every patch seems to fix things from some folks while breaking things for others...

I played it some today, and the hitching wasn't bad...but it WAS better. The framerate seemed nicer, though, but that might be drivers. The framerate was better than ever at 1680x1050 + 4xAA + 8xAF with all details. It used to slowdown a bit in certain places at that resolution, but now it runs really damn well.

Shame there are no HDR maps available (Lost Cost and DoD sound like they are the first), as I saw that option in the video settings now.
