i've been dicking around with repairing the creative zen jukebox i got a few years ago; it has a nice storage size, but it's heavy as hell, and the screen and headphone port busted out on me relatively quickly.

so, a new mp3 player seems like a good christmas gift for myself -- but i can't justify the price of an ipod. i'll sacrifice some of the style and coolness that comes along with having an ipod to save some money -- this seems like a good alternative, so far:

What is your budget?

jinx -- the $200 price point for the creative zen 30gb is awfully attractive; i can be swayed higher than that if it's really worth it, but...i couldn't justify $400, for example.

striker -- there are plenty of 3rd party products that can remedy problems with bundled software. i ran into the same problems with my current creative jukebox.

I have this. I love it. Not too heavy, not too big. It's worth the price and the software and interface are easy to use. I especially like the equilizer.

What was changed on the new model?
It's a bit sleeker and is about 80% the size of the original. The volume/power buttons are on top instead of on the side. You can also use a cradle instead of the regular cable. The capacity and battery life are the same (20GB, 12 hours).

I've been mulling over this one. I had a chance to handle the Zen Xtra in a store and found it to be fairly flimsy for a player. I'd normally prefer to get an Iriver, but my budget just won't allow that for the forseeable future.

WRONG, the new Dell DJ's only have 12 hrs of batt life, the older style (although larger and uglier) has 20 hrs of batt life. It is a fine product, you can't go wrong with either.
