I know some people roll their eyes when 'novels' are mentioned. But other people, such as myself, enjoy a decent novel to go with a game.
So here's what's coming later this year. (alot more than I thought)

This will be the 4th ME book right? I don't think I ever read the 3rd. Also, did they ever put out MGS 2/3?

I'm not a fan of the Gears of War "lore", but I am a fan of Karen Traviss and her previous two Gears books were pretty good.

I'm looking forward to the Uncharted book, as I am a fan of the storytelling in that series of games.

OP forgot the God of War novel, which has another of my favorite authors attached.

A mass effect novel that takes place during the reaper siege? Do wants.

I read a little bit more of the description and guess what, 'Super powerful Cerberus experiment gone wrong #XX30' makes an appearance. Now I'm much less interested. Also I found out it doesn't happen during the invasion of earth.

The Gears books have all been great cant wait for the next one. I also loved the last Mass Effect book so I will get the next one of those as well. I liked the first Resistance book but I am sad the new one doesnt pick up where it left off. I want more of Hale's stories dammit!

I would have been all over this years ago. I used to read a lot of game/tv/movie novels back in middle school and part of high school. Looking back, a lot of them weren't great, but I enjoyed them.

Good idea for a thread OP. I'm into the Gears and Mass Effect novels myself.

I'll be checking out that Deus Ex one too.

Honestly, these novels probably couldn't stand on their own with stable legs. However, in a lot of cases they supplements the games there based on, sometimes adding elements of immersion and atmosphere that might not be present in the digital counter-part.

They're just fun.

I'm currently reading Crysis Legion.

For all those who complained about the main character not talking in the game: once you see what an asshole/idiot he is in the novel, you'll be thanking your lucky stars.

Aside from that it's not been that bad, some dialogue was lifted directly from the game which is cool.

Also OP, Halo: Cryptum came out earlier this year.

Considering I constantly want to shoot myself in the head when Gears of War is doing something besides letting me kill gross looking aliens, I can't imagine it being reminiscent of Tolstoy or something.

I don't know why they feel a desire to do this. I enjoy books like First Strike and Fall of Reach far more than novel retellings of events I've already experienced.

Yeah I don't know. Like I said it's not bad but maybe it might have been interesting to go into the events between Crysis 1 and 2 and what Prophet was up to that whole time.

The Assassins Creed ones are even worse (IMO) because they just retell the game's story, but cut out all the future stuff which seems to be the most interesting part of the series. I might be wrong though since its been awhile since I looked into them

This new one looks like an original story though since there was already a Brotherhood book and its coming out too early for the new one.

Agreed. Are these books literary classics? No, but it's fun to get more context into a universe you're already interested in because of the games.

I misread the title as "A Guide To Video Game Novels" coming in 2011, ie, a book talking about video game novels, and story, lore, etc. Hell I'd read that.

Anyways, Maybe I'll pick up the Mass Effect book, have enjoyed the others.

Looking forward to the Uncharted book, but not really any of the others (though that's probably because I don't care for any of those other games).

I've read the first Halo novel, all three Mass Effect Novels, War of the Ancients trilogy, and am currently reading the first Dragon Age novel. I really enjoyed all of them so far.

The novels really are not like that at all. Yeah, theres some 'broness' but thats just your average military bravado. All three books were written by Karen Traviss, which in itself is nice because you get a nice level of consistency with the characters.

Also, she did a nice job of filling out things in between the games, really moving things behind the scenes. Oh, and some characters that are introduced in the books are going to be in Gears 3, which is a cool touch (Traviss also wrote GOW 3's script).

I forgot to mention that the Halo books are also awesome. Outside of The Flood, which committed a cardinal sin in my opinion by basically just retelling the game.

Martyr was an absolute surprise. It's a very good and easy read, with a pretty good structure.

Also, it clarifies some things about the Dead Space universe. All in all, i'd recommend it to anyone, whether you're interested in the Dead Space franchise or not. One of the best video game novels ever written.
