A lot of "unusual" games coming out next year

Don't really think gaming is creatively bankrupt or heading for a crash as some people are claiming.

Let's look at some of the third party titles coming out next year:

Scrapland (Xbox)
Oddworld : Stranger's Wrath (Xbox)
Psychonauts (Xbox, PS2)
Stubbs the Zombie (Xbox, PC)
Destroy All Humans (Xbox, PS2)

I don't really follow PS2 or GC releases very closely, so feel free to add to the list. How many of these will succeed, I don't know. I hope those which turn out to be good games do succeed.

Great thread. I'm really tired of all the doom-sayers and their complaining about how mainstream games have become. A game like Katamari Damacy would've never made it out during the 16-bit years.

I more meant original IPs and not direct sequels like Fire Emblem (which I don't consider original in anyway, but still) , Advance Wars or Harvest Moon.. Added Oddworld: STranger there since it's almost completely different from the previous games.

I would also add to the list... although they seem somewhat mainstream, they are all trying to bring something new and unusual to the table.

Pariah - More emphasis on character and story
Darkwatch - Horror meets FPS. They just hired some famous guys to do the score.
Jade Empire - Western dev does Eastern theme.
Advent Rising - Famous writer doing script
Mercanaries - LucasArts branching out on 3rd person fighting theme

Area 51 is a new IP that looks quite interesting as well.. who said all we see is sequels ? I'm quite excited for next years games.

How do you not consider Fire Emblem original? It basically created the SRPG.

Thank god, it's good to have an innovation year for a change.

Sure, this has been the best gaming year ever with Halo 2, Burnout 3, GTA: SA, Ridge Racers, Made in Wario DS, Rallisport Challenge 2 and then some.

This year's innovation, however, has been on the handheld side only for me (remember, no Katamari to PAL people!) with Chokkan Hitofude, Zoo Keeper, Lumines, Pocket Kingdom and Pathway To Glory.

Next year I either want home console innovation or just kickass Xbox 2 games - something great to run on my 42".

yes but hasn't there been at least 5 other games in the series? that's like saying ff-12 is original..

Oddworld Stranger is looking better and better the more I hear about it. I have loved all of the Oddworld games so far to date. I hope this games adds more depth to the various characters in the Oddworld universe, I hope it turns out to be a more modern Discworld atmosphere.

I welcome these bizarre games,
I feel most of gamings genre's have stagnated.
They all rip off each others idea's.

I really hope these titles end up being a breathe of fresh air.

Erm, using that stadard, really only Harvest Moon, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Makai Wars and Klonoa 2 should be removed.

...still not a bad list. And there's actually plenty more announced I left off.

Zelda GC is coming out next year.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS

(unless Konami announce ZOE3 or Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3)

This should be a sticky as it compliments Drinky Crows' thread perfectly. Also, if thorns can summarize the entries at the top.

okami - capcom's japan only arthouse game
Thank you for posting that. Okami is definetly unusual.

A game that I would add to the list is Metal Wolf Chaos. Sure it's a mech game, but the plot is completely absurd.
