A question for Series X with GamePass and PS5 Pro Owners

Game Pass has no doubt been amazing so far in 2025. With the likes of Oblivion Remastered and Expedition 33 releasing in just the past few weeks with Doom The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 releasing soon.

The issue is, whilst I have a subscription, I also know the best console version of the game is on the PS5 due to the Pro console. This alone makes me want to pick up the PS5 version of some of these games despite essentially having the Xbox version 'free'.

What are some of you doing, sticking to the Xbox version or investing more to play these games on the Pro?

well, I am sticking with Xbox and Gamepass but I also have a great PC so I can play there and beat the PS5 pro version.

Saying that, with both of these big games I am sitting and spending more time on the series X as my GF has been watching me play sometimes. Comfy couch.

I still need a GPU and CPU for my SFF build........

I had the same realization last year OP, and in addition to wanting to cut back my subscription expenses, canceled my GP sub. I still have XSX for BC on about a dozen physical 360/XB1 discs and my existing digital library, but all new release stuff is on my Pro or PC.

Sell one of them I would say. Multiple systems are no longer feasible.

Gamepass is a beast especially, requires a lot of time.

I recently tried Steamworld games on it. Loving them.

Historically I have mostly just bought on PS5, and began to really think, why the fuck am I paying for gamespass. More recently, as a bunch of games I wanted launched at once, I started asking Grok to recommend what platform to play on, ie if I should buy on PS5 pro, or 'play for free' on games pass, taking into account the support for 'pro' and the support for the dual sense.

It recommended:

Indiana - Buy on ps5
Claire Obscura - Gamespass
Oblivion - Gamespass

So I bought Indiana....then ended up trying Robocop whilst it was downloading, and got into it, and haven't touched Indiana.

Im assuming youre asking as you dont particularly care 'too much' about cost and have excess disposable income. As otherwise the obvious answer is play everything 'for free' lol.

Something tells me ms is moving with the current to play the innocent guy, but the next xbox is near and they'll take 2 steps ahead with series x2 ports. It's really hard to tell they'll be nicer here.

If there is a physical ill get the pro version. If not then gamepass makes sense to me. I would rather not subscribe to gamepass but i wont lie they have been cooking lately

Can't help you with the Pro part, but as a OG PS5 and SX owner, I'd say the split of my gaming by platform is 85 : 15 in Xbox's favor because of GP and me just generally preferring that controller.

Sell X + Pro and get a pc instead. You'll have the best version of the games + Game Pass. You are welcome.

I don't have Series X or Gamepass anymore. I came to the realisation that I only play certain games, so having a sub was a bit pointless.

I do have disposable income enough to warrant a purchase of a PS5 Pro, and buy the games that I want to play.

Having both makes little sense to me. If you can afford it (which I assume you can considering you've stumped up for a PS5 Pro), then why not just play the best console version of the games?

I much prefer having my own curated library of games, than one chosen for me.

There was not enough value with my Series X compared to PS5 and the Pro, so I traded in my Series X for the $420 deal at GameStop. It's very rare that I trade hardware in but this generation has been a let down with Xbox between having the inferior controller (to me AND PS5 controller is like a next generation experience all on its own), no exclusives and games being available on Playstation and PC to enjoy. Gamepass was also a nail in the coffin for my Series X as I never built up a purchased digital library of games to keep me tethered to the ecosystem. So separating from my Series X was practically the easiest thing ever to do as there is nothing keeping me tethered to the system. Most games worth playing I either purchased on PC or PS5, so gamepass was mostly good for playing titles I know I would never buy and didn't necessarily have to be played on my Series X, I could do this over the cloud or download direct to my computer as an alternative. Now that the PS5 PRO is out, if I'm going to be spending time with a console, it's definitely the PS5 Pro as it is the best way to experience console games now this generation with better resolutions, frames, etc. As for backwards compatibility. I took a long hard look at the list of BC games and there was almost nothing on that list that I didn't own already on PC or another console, plus there is always my trusty Xbox One X if I really really need it.

So in the end, my Series X has been mostly a paper weight, far too redundant and has not brought enough value to me as an individual to justify keeping it while it still holds good trade-in value for something else that I know I would use more like a PS5 Pro or maybe a Switch 2 (which is what I traded in for). Looking forward to playing GTA 6 on my PS5 Pro.

I just get a month of GP for games I know I'll beat within a month. If I know it'll take me longer, I'll get it from a Steam Key site.
I didn't get the Pro cause I don't want to upgrade my TV yet and I don't have HDMI 2.1.
But now I choose between PC (steam deck and family) vs GP (cheap key for small game) vs PS5 (portal, exclusive)

I'm just playing the Game Pass games on the Series X. It's also revealing how poor of an upgrade the PS5 Pro really is. I own it already and enjoy it, but in hindsight the upgrade from the base PS5 was not worth it.

I have a PS5 Pro and I love it, but I agree with what everyone else is saying. If gamepass is a big reason for sticking with Xbox, then I think it makes more sense to invest into a gaming PC. Granted, it is more expensive and more effort to setup at the start (specially if you want the closest possible to a console like experience), but in the mid to long term it makes the most sense financially.

That said, if money is not a concern for you and/or you are interested in playing some Playstation exclusives, then sure, get the PS5 Pro. I definitely don't regret it.

Dude you've been talking about doing this for years while still using that as the excuse to use your Xbox.

Just stop the pretence and say you prefer playing on your Xbox, because that's what you actually do.

All this right here is me as well. Xbox Series and Game Pass were a fine way to rent a bunch of games but reinforced it not being a platform to purchase games on versus other platforms. I had 3 years locked in from the Series X launch and still sold my
Series X in June 2023 to take advantage of Starfield hype, and just played the couple games of interest from Game Pass on my dated PC until the sub expires.

Certinty Certinty how much longer do you have left on your Game Pass or do you buy month to month? Do you have a large amount of game purchases on your Xbox? And to confirm, you already have a PS5 Pro?

I got the pro day 1 and have only played stellar blade on it. Mainly got it for whenever 1st party games come out.

I use my series X for everything else, I've always enjoyed the Xbox platform overall better.

If a game comes out and it's not on Gamepass or noticeably way better on the pro I'll probably buy it on PS at that point.

I prefer the Xbox controller so I'll do Xbox and GamePass. If they aren't on GamePass, I'll buy on the Pro. If I enjoy them on GamePass, I'll buy the Xbox version. Depending on the game though I might buy on Xbox either way, like fighters (controller).

Series X and Gamepass.

Sony has been intellectually challenged for a bit, and I've been more interested in what GP has to offer than buying anything for PS5. Stalker 2, Avowed, Clair Obscur, Dark Ages in a few days, etc.

That will probably change once DS2 and Yotei release, but right now, GP is on a roll since they seem hellbent on bribing me to like them with great games I would have bought if not on GP.

That said, I still absolutely abhorr anything corporate/marketing MS/Xbox and despise their obnoxious zealots and shills, much more those that do it for free, which have suddenly died in droves on the internets hehe. You can bribe me to play your games on my cheap console on the very fucking cheap, but you'll never bribe me to like you and your cohort of retards, MS. 😎

I strongly suggest gamers start looking away from consoles. Seriously consider a PC.
funny as im one of the pc gamers that jump to console. (twice infact!)

still cant stand pc gaming.

incredibly expensive entry cost.
troubleshooting headaches
recent PC hardware quality especially GPU
awful gpu drivers
bad optimizations

pc gamers having these troubles everyday and PCMR just ignore this issues conveniently

Mid-gen refreshes are so passe, why not utilise Play Anywhere and keep your Xbox, sell that other thing and put the money toward getting a powerful Xbox PC™.

I still haven't taken my PS5 out of the box since I moved, why when there's nothing to play.

I'm thankful to afford both platforms as well as PC gaming. I use Gamepass as the option in case a Pro Enhanced version to a game doesn't perform well enough or just plainly doesn't exist.

In the case of Expedition 33, the differences between Series X and Pro (according to DF) isn't substantial enough to warrant getting it on PS5. However, I did want to buy it for the platform to support the devs. This game was an example to where I was fine playing it on GP versus PS5.

All in all, good to have options. When one doesn't have it, the other might. And if that's the case, you are already equipped to play x game on x platform without any sort of FOMO.

It's not enough to justify the price IMO. I'll just get the next PS when the new generation comes out. I already have a Series X and a Switch, I don't need a 3rd console
Well now it's a different matter and I can agree. But for the IQ ps5 pro give really a pleasant boost especially for 60 fps mode or quite demanding game. But I know the price is not accessible to all and it's a real pity.
