Obviously I'm not an archaeologist so you are completely free to ignore what I'm about to say, but I believe that was a successful propaganda campaign by Egypt to cover up the shameful history of how the pyramids were built.

Yes, it's how the world worked back then, but imagine their fear of woke tourists shunning the pyramids in protest of slavery, ultimately decimating their critical tourism economy (either #1 or #2 contributor to their GDP depending on how you calculate it), hence why they needed to change the conversation.

The historical consensus appears to be that the pyramids were built with conscripted labour where peasants were forced into grueling labour to pay off their "taxes". If a person refused to work, they were beaten. If they ran away, their families were arrested and put in labour camps instead. If they were captured and tried to desert again, they would have their nose or ears cut off as a permanent sign of their desertion.

Funny enough, Egyptians would never execute or severely maim a conscripted worker as the ultimate goal was to preserve their able bodies for forced labour.

Historians can play semantics all they want. To me that is best described as "slavery"!
