Personally I never liked the Active mode in any of the ATB FFs. Requiring quick thinking and decision-making is fine, but I don't want battles to be a test of my skill at searching through menus. Plus it tends to encourage people to stick with the same moves every turn since unfamiliar spells take extra time to find.

It makes the battles slightly more difficult and holds your attention better. I'm a big fan.
