Samurai Champloo is coming this year, eh? Hope the dub is half as good as CB's.

When does the show start back up in Japan anyway?

So wait, they finished the anime series but the manga still isn't done? How does that make sense?
This is the case almost all the time. A lot of manga run for years and years and years.

They basically said that some shows take time finding their audience. They said that this is happening to Venture Brothers, which I guess they think has only recently started to find its niche. They also said it took a long time for ATHF to gain a following too.

Smells like bullshit to me, but whatever.

With Venture Brothers, it actually isn't. I remember watching the pilot, and remember swearing to myself and hoping that it'd just be another AS show that would be cancelled before it got as much needless attention as Ripping Friends. But - almost overnight - the writing improved drastically, the show moved away from Dean and Hank, and more onto the entire clan. And the villians. Oh dear, the villains are brilliant. Underbite's minions (Cat-Clops, Girl Hitler, Manic 8-Ball) are great, it's a shame they weren't used more.

Venture Brothers is now sort of a Ben Edlund fever dream about Johnny Quest; I adore it, and I'm not one to normally "adore" a show.

I've only seen one episode of Paranoia Agent, but I'm still convinced it has the potential to be one of the best anime series I've ever seen.

One a sidenote, I saw it at an anime fest here in NYC and the Naruto loving crowd absolutely hated. And reaction was pretty mixed for Samuria as well (which I also really dug).

Paranoia Agent is good so far, I've only seen the first DVD, but really, typical Naruto fans wouldn't enjoy P.A. since it's not as immediately satisfying as Naruto is. Every episode reveals a bit more of a mystery and so far it's gotten very interesting. You should pick the first DVD up, I believe it's still only 10 bucks at Best Buy.

Samurai Champloo is one of the best animated shows EVER that plain and simple, personally i think i might actually like it a little bit more than Bebop but I need to see how it ends

No justification. Basically just "we're renewing it and showing new episodes in April anyway whether you like it or not."

UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH! UGH!

Why are they renewing this complete and utter garbage the show isnt funny, you wanna know why its not funny cause its too damned forced and contrived (spelling) shitty sealabs are better than the best TGTTM

I want to print out frames from that show and whipe my ass with them anyone know of a good inkjet that can print onto soft tp

The dub is pretty good for the most part. Mugen is played by David Lucas (Spike from Bebop, and just about every other anime character ever), and is probably the weakest of the bunch. Not so much because he's "bad"...his voice acting is fine, but the character comes off very differently in English than he does in Japanese. He sounds a bit more "together" in English as opposed to his slightly crazy and stupid Japanese version. He almost sounds like a Mountain Dew Samurai. Says "dude" a lot, uses the word "mofo" at least once that I can remember. I like Japanese Mugen better, but English Mugen isn't as bad as I probably just made him sound. :D

Jin is perfect. I forget his VA's name, but he's pretty spot on. He was a bit shaky sounding in episode 1, like he wasn't totally comfortable with the character, but after that he's fine.

Fuu is voiced by Kari Wahlgren (Haruhara Haruko from FLCL, Robin from Witch Hunter Robin, Cher Degre from Wolf's Rain, and a bunch of other stuff). She's good too. Not quite as high-pitched and slightly less air-headed sounding, but good all the same.

And the show starts back up in Japan TOMORROW NIGHT. Wooo! Good week for Champloo news.

That Naruto loving crowd is a bunch of morons. If you like A) Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers) or B) shows like Serial Experiments Lain or Boogiepop Phantom or C) all of the above, then you will love Paranoia Agent.

Also, some more nuggets from questions they went back to:

Adult Swim will NOT be buying any more episodes of Case Closed, but they will repeat the 50 episodes they already have sometime in the future.

New ATHF in Fall 2005

12 new episodes of Harvey Birdman starting in July 2005

The show with Andre 3000 is no longer in development. Andre 3000 has switched over to the kids side of Cartoon Network and is making a kids' show.

8 shows in development. 7 are comedies that draw on talent from Home Movies, Mr. Show, and TV Funhouse. The 8th, Korgath the Barbarian, is an "epic, traditionally animated show, ala Samurai Jack."

Robot Chicken = Feb. 20. Seth Green's show featuring stop motion animation using action figures rooted in pop culture parody. Voice talent includes Seth McFarlane, Mila Kunis, and other Family Guy voices.

levious

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.
I wish Samurai Jack would start up again and get moved to Adult Swim.

Woo! Thanks for the info. Samurai Champloo was a show that really had to grow on me, but it was worth it. The VA for Mugen is so damn good, I can't imagine David Lucas doing a better job (even though he was amazing as Spike). Can't wait to see the show in English. Then, maybe I can get my sister to watch, and see all of the episodes in order.

Oh, also, I know the voice actors of Jet and Faye from Bebop made appearances as side characters in the first couple episodes (Jet as the provincial governor in episode 1, Faye as Mugen's "lady friend" in episode 2), so Bebop connections abound.

Tom Goes to the Mayor is absolute genius. I don't understand the vitriolic hate for the show.

like I said the show just comes off very forced very contrived very its so crazy and whacky it just HAS to be funny ZOMG

the only truly funny part of the series so far was when he showed him the pictures of his kids and the mayor says ohh they look just like you and he replies with well theyre not mine

that was funny the first 10 times i saw then they showed it in commercials 1,000,000,000,000,000 killing any and all humor it had left

I also just don't like the "fun with photoshop filters" look of the show

you and me both what the heck happened to the series
It was canned. Cartoon Network dropped it before they had even aired all the episodes. They finally dumped the last four on a Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars marathon back in September or so after having left the series for over a year. But yeah, they dropped it. Genndy Tartakovsky would like to do a film of some kind and wrap the series up, but he's busy with Clone Wars and his live-action/CGI Astro Boy movie and Cartoon Network doesn't appear too interested in even releasing the series on DVD. We got the first 13 episodes back in May and there hasn't been a peep (to my knowledge) about the rest. That, above all else, is what's pissing me off. At least shove the stuff out on DVD. I can't imagine sales were that bad, assuming they weren't good. I would love to see an awesome conclusion to Jack's story, but shit, I'd love to just own the series first.

CN just doesn't seem to want anything to do with the series now.

If I could complain to a CN/AS exec about one thing, it's their awful DVD support.

I pitched a show to CN at their Burbank studio once, it's pretty hard to get them to like anything unless you're following current trends. The same goes for pretty much every cartoon studio in Hollywood.

I just did some hunting around and seems reliable sources are pointing to Samurai Jack Vol 2 in Q2 and Vol 3 in Q4. That works for me I guess.

Also, TV Tome lists the Venture Bros: Season 1 set for November... take it with a grain of salt, but still.

AAAARRGGGHHHH I so wanted to know what was up with that now I never will

FUCK YOU CN!!!!

theres so much I would complain to those bastards about, they havent handled anything right from the power puff girls movie to the shit they run on AS

It's because the same people in charge of Kids' WB and the rest of the "family entertainment" are in charge of CN. Be grateful we even have Adult Swim -- if these guys didn't see profit in it, it would be endless Cartoon Cartoon repeats at 2 AM instead of endless TGTTM repeats. :p

As for the seemingly tough decision on Venture Bros, CN is not anxious to renew it unless the fans can prove it will make them money. It's a half-hour series, as opposed to their traditional quarter-hour shows, and it's fully animated. This is the problem -- it costs way more to make than ATHF, and episodes can't be produced as quickly.

Think about how much money AOLTW is making on a single ep of ATHF: first you get advertisers for the first run of the show. Then you get the ad revenue for the reruns, which there are many of. And then -- here's the killer -- the DVD sales! That's alot of milage for a very, very, very low budget. Venture Bros can't begin to match that. In fact, it won't match that budget:revenue. That is why CN doesn't want to renew Venture -- there's not enough money in just pleasing the fans. The fans have to prove they're worth it by getting those Neilson bastards to tune in.

wierd sounds like CN is dicking around with VB. Late last year I met with the Animation Diretor for a possible job on VB or just with Noodle soup. He told me there not sure how there doing at all cause CN won't tell them, IF they geta second seson they'll know by the end of the year (2004) and go into production in January 2005. He also told me EXACTLY what to put in my portfolio to get a job...they pay $800 a week BUT it's only for 6 months and depending how good the cartoon is doing anywhere from 1 month to 6 months off till production starts again. I went for another job that was more stable but didn't pay as much...I got rent to pay and 6 months of no income could hurt.

A couple of months later I talked to a friend who works on ninja turtles he told me VB did get picked up for a second season and they sent out the production test to new people, also that ninja turtles started doing really well...bla bla bla.

So I dunno some of what I know is heresay...I was gonna email the Animation Director (he siad if I ever have any questions or need advice E-mail him) but it'll porbally sound like a fanboy email...lol

/edit

As for pirching a show...what if your a better artist then a writer. I got a shit load of characters that all tie into each other but a lame ass story. Hows that work? Whats with the submission form? DO you give up the rights to your stuff when you sign it?

Also whats the deal with Justice League Unlimited, I can't see Teen titans being renewed but not Justice League?!

Shit, this just about ruins my afternoon. Samurai Jack was such a great show, and I thought it had a pretty widespread fanbase. Can't believe it got canned.

Just thought I'd bump this with a little more information from Kim Manning about the Adult Swim programming plans for the summer.

During the summer, Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell will be kicked off the Saturday night lineup, and Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent will air in their stead. Once those shows have finished their run, Fullmetal will return to Saturdays with premiers of the second half of the series and Ghost in the Shell will return with 2nd GIG.

It sounds like FMA will go to break after episode 25 (what delightfully evil programming) and will probably rerun the first season on weeknights.

Also, it looks like Venture Bros. has indeed been renewed for a second season.

venture.mancubus.net/

I participate in a professional graphics group (AIGA) and last Thursday Ed Murrieta, creative director of Cartoon Network, gave a presentation to our local chapter (there's a write-up here: http://southcarolina.aiga.org/). Asked point-blank, he confirmed that VB season 2 is a go! (VB also happens to be his favorite show).

Not quite official, but I'm fairly certain it's legit.

Not sure how I missed this earlier, but I just caught a glimpse of it scrolling down the page, and it makes excited. I'm definitely down for something along those lines. I'll be looking out for this sucker.

I don't know, but here's a story about the ratings for their premieres.
The premiere of much-anticipated new episodes drove Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited to triple-digit gains in the ratings, Cartoon Network said today. Overall, the network saw its prime time and total day ratings for the week jump by impressive amounts.

Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited were the number one basic cable shows in their time period among boys 9-14, the network said, and Teen Titans was also the number one show among tweens 9-14 and boys 6-11. Among kids 6-11, Teen Titans scored a 5.0 rating and delivery of 1,222,000, and among boys 9-14 it scored a 3.7 and delivery of 921,000.

Justice League Unlimited had ratings of 4.2 and delivery of 1,029,000 among kids 6-11. Among tweens 9-14, ratings of 3.3 and delivery of 800,000 represented triple-digit increases over the numbers in the same period last year.
It disgusts me that Teen Titans scores higher.

Samurai Champloo

Paranoia Agent

Samurai Champloo should do well, and Paranoia Agent should confuse about 99% of the audience. Damn good show, just not sure how it will appeal to the AS crowd.

I hope this means that Geneon is no longer in bed with G4, as they had been getting the rights to their material lately.

Yay for Venture!

And yeah, I was surprised as hell that they picked up Paranoia Agent. It is guaranteed to sail right over the heads of almost their entire audience. I think they're trying to take the anime block a little more seriously, though. I feel like they deliberately went out and got Paranoia Agent with the intention of taking a big risk.

Whatever, though. I'm happy about Paranoia Agent being on, and that's really all that matters. :D

Just want to chime in and say Venture Bros. rocks! I watched the first episode back in August and then I forgot about it, but watched the latest episode. Hopefully they release a Season 1 set, I'd definately buy it.

I have to second these thoughts. Glad to have Venture back, and happy to see Paranoia Agent on these shores. Like I mentioned before, the crowd at the NYC anime fest I saw it with hated it, but I loved every second of the first episode.

Still more to add from Kim Manning.

This was in response to a question about possibly acquiring more new anime in 2005:

"I can promise that you'll see at least two new series announcements fairly soon, and more before the year is out."

Note that this is in addition to the previous announcements of Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent and the even earlier announcement of Ghost in the Shell: 2nd GIG.
