Advance Wars DS - 1up.com review

Getting this and the Puppies on the same day. I don't know which one to play first...too much awesome at the same time.

Too bad they ditched the awesome Japanese plastic-ey army men cover for the US release.

It's decent replacement art, but...

Heh, I have the same dilemma. It's a good thing I have two DS systems because my wife will be all over Nintendogs as soon as I get it into the house.

I don't normally care either way for cover art but you're drunk if you don't think that's hot.

I agree, the art isn't bad by any means - but i think that after seeing the kitsch masterpiece of the other cover this one is a letdown. Had I never seen the other cover art before, I'd consider this cover just a-ok.

Just so you guys know EB and GameStops should be getting AW:DS in their interactives this week... and it's no weak sauce demo version!

Sample dialogue, courtesy of Jake, the teen commander who spouts out such tripe as "we're about to serve Black Hole a bowl of smackdown soup!" If he's not laying the smack down, he's talking about what mixed tapes he's bringing to the next battle. It's enough to make you want to strangle Nintendo's usually reliable localization team. Of course, this is probably just an interpretation of the Japanese equivalent's original script, but it's still grating for anyone over the age of 14.

Can anyone with Japanese DS copy confirm this? Is this bad translation or was the dialogue always annoying?

I really had a blast playing the Japanese Advance Wars 1 with Santa Claus.

I've been playing the US version nonstop since Friday (Over 20 hours logged so far) and can confirm Jake is perhaps the most annoying Advance Wars character of all time. Lots of net speak (You were owned!) which may be funny still for some, but overall feels forced. Luckily the new and returning characters are all ace, it's just Jake that will really grind on your nerves... TO THE MAX!

The game's dialog on a whole is actually pretty well done. There are humorous moments; I just think that because Jake is the first character introduced it makes his persona amplified.

I just played AW: DS at EB on my lunch break for a few minutes. The interface is sooo smooth. I got stuck on AW2 so I'm not sure whether or not I will buy it because I feel bad having that one around without beating it. But I'm tempted after playing it.

*shrug* You win some, you lose some. I don't bother reading too many replies lately, because it's never long before the threads degenerate into flame-athons.

And I've never given much credit to GI after their Paper Mario: TTYD score. That was bullshit and a half.

The game got a 9.25 from GI. Also got GotM. The 2.5 was a joke.

I played AW at the store today, along with nintendogs. I had a good time until the clerks made me leave. (I wasn't wearing any pants)

Sadly, my wife will probably take this away from me faster then she will take away Nintendogs. I really need to purchase a DS of her own sometime soon.

Crap, I freaking loved the first two Advance Wars. But there's no way I'm forking over money for a DS.

Man, it's like people are just trying not to find reasons to buy a DS soon.

Don't worry, I'm convinced only 5 people in the world actually beat AW2. If you go read GameFAQs, none of them actually give a walk though on how to beat the final mission, just vague suggestions. A couple months back we had a thread here about the final mission and it was more of the same.

i always thought the last AW2 mission was bullshit. it was more like trial and error than actually planning out what to do. BUMRUSH AIR ATTACK!!!!

That's actually really comforting. I haven't played in months, maybe I will load it up to get psyched. The music on the DS version sounded incredible and I can't wait to play it on my own system.

I've beaten it on normal mode, but have been stuck on the LAST mission on hard mode for about a year playing on and off. Goddamn Sturm with that meteor strike. Just absolutely ridiculous! :lol

Up until the final mission, there were hard missions, but nothing planning and patience couldn't eventually solve. But the last mission's difficulty was off the scale.

People say "Use Colin on the right side" Or "Use Eagle on the left side" and "build lots of bombers". It's all bullshit. Sturm always counters me, no matter who I use where. I could see winning the final mission through attrition, but you don't get that option.
