After 2.5 years of loyal service, a 4090 decided to self-immolate.

Arguably bad design (including UX), but this likely wouldn't happen if it was properly attached. It should go click.

And this is with a GPU pulling 400w, the RTX5090s are doing 600w, expect more posts like this in the foreseeable future.
Thats one of major reasons i decided not to jump on 5090 bandwagon(other being obviously scalper like prices even for base models with bad cooling).
Waiting either till we get 5080ti/super with 20-24gigs of vram or till 2027 and 60xx series of cards, which will be finally made on 3nm tsmc node :)

Damn OP, reading that makes me value my decision to sell my 4090 even more. It ran without any issues for a long time, but i never really trusted the new connector. Made me feel uneasy.

The problem is not the consumption but the crappy design of the connector, with an unreliable system that gives priority to aesthetics over safety. And above all, the number of people who have defended it by being adopted (and developed in part) by Nvidia, for being a decision of "their brand" and blaming other users for not knowing how to connect a cable.

Any card pulling more than 250W is an overkill, IMO.

Technology should be about making stuff more efficient. Brute forcing using more power is bad design.
