I mean Among Us is proof it could work as just a multiplayer game. Doing it as a traditional single player FPS on exploration, combat, and narrative is easy. Another alternative is you don't even need to do an entire roster of characters and take a page out of indie horror where you end up on a base, and find out what shit went down. Spend the development time to making an immersive sim, creature design, and level building.
That's three solid directions to making the Thing. The existing story and premise of the IP writes itself.
