Age of Empires III!!! Holy crap!!

:lol I don't think you're in touch with computer graphics, Half-Life 2, at it's best (and it's a feat, for sure) can't produce anything near as smooth in a still screen, and you want this possible in a year? Maybe in the labs, but no one can that amount of processing power to fit on a graphics card to be sold within a year and no software publishers develop games which can't be optimized on unreleased and unannonced cards.

It's clear that it's a drawing with computer touch ups. Hard to see how anyone could tell otherwise.
:lol You really don't know what you're talking about, do you?

Does it still play like a confused RTS game held together with some bizarre 'turn based' stuff?
AoE never had any turn based stuff.. are you thinking of Rise of Nations? Or do you mean something different by 'turn based stuff'?

It plays like a bizzaro mix of CIV and command and conquer and I've never liked it. Its one spastic experience that just never seemed to work well to me.

hrm for me AoE played much less spastically then other RTSes as there were no special unit abilities (like spells etc.). You just send your troops into battle and hope that your mix of units is better than the opponents.

Plus the AoE series has the most sophisticated defensive structures, and by far the best implementation of formations. You group different units together and the whole mass travels at the speed of the slowest unit, that just makes SO much sense. Plus by default, weaker units (archers, siege weapons) travel at the back and stronger units (infantry, knights) take the front. Beautiful.

Don't you guys remember the intro of Age of Empires 2? It looked EXTREMELY realistic, but come on, that was just the intro. The game itself did not remotely look like that.

If anything, you guys should expect the same until told differently.

There in being one of my huge problems with it, Rise of Nations, and similar. At the end of the day you just had this big mass of units or different masses of units running into each other and hilariously sitting 5 inches from each other and shooting point blank at each other. In the end, the implementation looked rather stupid to me. Rise of Nations was actually worse in a lot of respects :) Then amidst all of these people are erecting buildings, defenses, and upgrading through the ages (uh, okay), etc. It just seemed that the game's scale was just all wrong and it ended up being one big confused mess (especially in multiplayer).

Seriously. How could anybody mistake that for anything else? It's clearly a piece of concept artwork.

It's hand-drawn art with computer coloring, filtering, and effects.

AoE2 was an awsome game. Still one of my fav rtss. So, even if AoE3 looks half as good as that pic and still plays as well as Ao2, its all good in my book.

AOE is probably what brought me to the gaming scene. (well, maybe warcraft 2)

But I just loved the music, very very nice game.

I hope there will be beta testing for AOE3. (I went to their office for beta testing of AOE2 and AOM).

If you played like that against at least semi-skilled human opponent you would get your ass handed to you - badly. While having a good mix of units was certainly important - good battle strategy mattered more (particularly against idiots who really just sent units into battle and hoped for the best).

Argh so many haters, the agony... :(
Seriously though - that couldn't be further from the truth, the multiplayer aspect of the game was by far its best point - and not confused or messy at all (single player admittedly sucked ass, thanks to AI even several levels dumber then it's usual for an RTS, and they are basically always dumb).

Of course - I can see how the game could look confusing to newbies that insisted playing on max speed setting (and always get their asses handed to them as result).

Can I get that scan in PM too btw? :D

phoenix - yeah... that is a HORRIBLE way to play an RTS and against any decent player or better you will get your ass handed to you. The key here is strategy. Heck, even back to the days of WC2, if there WAS a large open assault with tons of forces piutched against each other, most of the time it was probably just a diversion for some behind the scenes stuff sneaking in.

but yeah, on b.net against many less than average opponents there was LOTS of building up and not really doing anything.. well, they tried until you made it basically impossible for them to generate cash as fast as you were picking units off one at a time.

yeah it's not just throwing units into battle, you have to make sure that your pikemen are going after mounted units and that your infantry is keeping your pikemen and archers safe from other infantry etc. And then of course you have to adjust your army composition after seeing what your opponent is doing. No matter how much you like your English Longbows if your enemy has a lot of mounted units, you're going to have to get more pikemen and infantry.

Edit: Faf I was comparing AoE gameplay to Blizzard titles with my post mostly (no invisiblity/ice storm mage tactics). With AoE's rock/paper/scissors hierarcy the unit mix was of critical importance though.

That pic looks cool....but I want to hear confirmation about if those are games graphics or just concept...

BTW, when does the next FS iteration come ?
