Critic Reviews

CGMagazine - Brendan Frye - 9.5 / 10
Age of Mythology: Retold is a masterful blend of nostalgia and innovation that fans and newcomers will both cherish.

COGconnected - Mark Steighner - 82 / 100
In its day, Age of Mythology introduced some compelling new ideas into the real time strategy genre. While I think it’s overdue for a complete remake, Age of Mythology: Retold is an excellent way to reacquaint players with a genuine classic, and a perfect introduction for gamers new to the title.

Cerealkillerz - Steve Brieller - German - 8.1 / 10
The nostalgic feeling kept and at the same time enough new elements is the balance act that remakes have to manage. Age of Mythology Retold did it with new modernised graphics and a campaign that stays true to the original. There is still room for improvement in the wayfinding or formation systems and also a questionable DLC premium package is in the mix but we still had a lot of fun with this timeless classic.

Digitec Magazine - German - 4 / 5
New editions of old games are a balancing act: they have to feel like they used to and at the same time they have to meet the demands of modern audiences. Age of Mythology: Retold manages this balancing act spectacularly well. This is exactly what a remaster should feel like.

Gameliner - Anita van Beugen - Dutch - 4.5 / 5
Age of Mythology: Retold blends nostalgia with modern appeal, offering a well-polished experience with expansive content. Despite minor flaws, the game’s mythological elements and orchestral soundtrack steal the show.

GamingTrend - Mark Julian - 90 / 100
Age of Mythology: Retold doesn't redefine the genre but returning fans will not be disappointed and new ones may discover why RTS games were king of the hill in the not-so-distant past. Retold is mechanically solid, beautifully remade, and a blast to play with friends.

Hardcore Gamer - Cory Wells - 3.5 / 5
Age of Mythology: Retold eliminates the need to play the original titles as it takes everything from both of those games, modernizes it and brings the experience to 2024. While it lacks the polish of Age of Empires IV, the game remains extremely fun thanks to the mythological units and God Powers that can be recharged and used multiple times. This aspect adds more depth that may have not been there for some players for AOE4. The gameplay aspect does still feel like a RTS from 2002, but the campaign, skirmish and the option of PVE multiplayer will supply a ton of hours to dive into Retold.

Hobby Consolas - Daniel Quesada - Spanish - 85 / 100
The gods are immortal and so is this game: it's still as fun as it was 20 years ago and has received just the right facelift to remain attractive.

IGN Italy - Stefano Castagnola - Italian - 8.5 / 10
A finely re-made classic that is still as engaging and fun as it was back in 2002.

IGN Spain - Esteban Canle - Spanish - 8 / 10
Age of Mythology Retold is a reimagining of the original that adds more than just aesthetics and brings it closer to more modern RTS games without losing sight of its idiosyncrasies. With a major graphical overhaul and many quality-of-life improvements in resource management and optimization, it remains a fun experience for everyone, veterans and newbies alike.

PC Gamer - Phil Iwaniuk - 75 / 100
Old school strategy, sensibly modernised. Creaky cutscenes and character art aside, the visual overhaul works wonders.

SECTOR.sk - Branislav Kohút - Slovak - 8 / 10
The return of another iconic RTS was successful, and the blending of the original gameplay with new graphics and mods was done well. It's not perfect, but the game is qualitatively better than many of its contemporaries. The settler priority system is currently unreliable, but it could gradually improve and eventually it will probably be a trend in modern strategies, where a few similar attempts have already appeared.

Shacknews - Josh Broadwell - 7 / 10
Age of Mythology Retold is fun, don’t get me wrong. The visual overhaul alone is enough to make playing this 22-year-old game easier, and the quality-of-life improvements sand down some of the older versions’ more annoying edges. However, with more substantial structural improvements in later Age of Empires games, plus with the likes of Ara: History Untold just around the corner, I’m just not sure Retold needed to exist.

The Beta Network - Anthony Culinas - 8 / 10
Age of Mythology Retold is an awesome remake of a classic RTS, staying true to its roots with a bunch of modern enhancements

Tom's Hardware Italia - Lorenzo Quadrini - Italian - 8 / 10
Age of Mythology: Retold does everything you would expect from a high-quality remaster (which is almost a remake, given the significant changes made) of a high-level game. There are a few flaws, and perhaps more effort could have been put into the gameplay to find even more innovative solutions, especially once the decision was made not to reproduce it on a 1:1 scale. But these are just details—if you're a fan of the series or enjoy a good RTS, this is without a doubt your must-have purchase for the end of August.

Windows Central - Samuel Tolbert - 4.5 / 5
World's Edge and its partners successfully revive the most underrated Age of Empires game with the launch of Age of Mythology: Retold. More than a pure definitive edition, this classic strategy game gets a full-blown remake with smart gameplay changes and a bevy of options to make it approachable. Aside from a few bugs and glitches that should be addressed, it's a phenomenal game for RTS fans to sink their teeth into.

XboxEra - Pieter Jasper - 8 / 10
I think you won’t be disappointed. If they can fix some of the AI problems and balance issues in future patches, Age of Mythology can truly stand among its peers. It might even become the true fan favorite it was always destined to be. Maybe we should ask the gods for their favor and start praying.

I got pretty into Age of Empires 2 remake, but once you stop playing it's pretty hard to jump back in. Works really well on a controller, but you need to stay current and practiced.

I'm sure this will be fun as well. Going to just have to make time to stick with it.

From the Shacknews review which gave it a 70, what a stupid take on the Remake

Why shouldn't it exist just because some other game comes out which isn't even like Age of Mythology?
Once again someone who was desperate to find a point of criticism.

Or we could simply abolish most of the games. A shooter, a racing game, a sports game, an adventure game, one RPG ... Who needs more than one per genre? Selection, so overrated. /s

P.S. I'm much more interested in AoM than Ara, at least so far.

"I don't think the game needs to exist"

Is some fucking take writing a game review lol.

Totally in for this. Even if its just the same game with an added lick of paint. My GOAT for all strategy games.

Some people are just fucking stupid and should never ever write reviews.
That dumb bastard who said it doesn't need to exist just should never be allowed to review a game

I am enjoying it very much. Risked a preorder on it, well worth it. Devs really seem like they listen to feedback.

Playing an RTS on a controller is garbage. Modern consoles allow mouse and keyboard for a few genres, the big one being this.

Anyone have any good articles (or a manual) on how to play this (on Xbox). I did the quick tutorial, which told me nothing really, and did the prologue. I had no idea what to do, how to build units, upgrade, pick gods, or anything else really. I’m pretty bummed as I was pretty excited but I am totally clueless on what to do, how to play and even what controls do what.

I pirated this game back when it came out and beat the campaign (it was really good), sorry MS. Hopefully me buying this day one makes up for my old crime.

The tutorial was pretty useful I thought, just take your time getting used to the different commands. These games take awhile as they can feel overwhelming in the beginning but this is well made for console and a good starting point.

XSX and if it's like Age 2, works surprisingly well on controller.

FYI, the console version has full keyboard and mouse support as well. Just plug a USB mouse/KB in and you're good to go like the PC version.

That's how I played the AoE games last year when they came to console.

edit: OP updated with new meta scores, it has increased on both OC and MC since the topic was made. Good shit.

Nice, good that it increased in score.

Yeah it's a great game, really happy I paid for the upgrade.

It's the only one of the "Age" games that I ever completed the campaign for. Looking forward to giving it another go. I hope they kept the same voice actress for Athena. I'm sure she was Athena in God of War 1+2 as well.

I've always enjoyed AOE3's campaigns too. If you've never played them, I would suggest it.

Devs already took feedback based on some complaints about the gods profile pictures and changed it. They've also completely redone all the VOe for Arkantos since the beta. In fact, all of the VO is better than the beta, I wouldn't be surprised if the beta VO was a rush job for the beta. The only complaint I really have, is that the undead units like the mummy are flat grey. I hope they change it, looks really dull and boring in comparison to everything else. That and I'd like the skeletons from dead units on the field.

Thanks for being so helpful. Actually it’s been a while since I played an RTS but never one on Xbox. And I’ve never played Age of Mytholgy before. So quit being an ass.

I actually wasn't being an ass. You seemed to be asking about basic mechanics that are basically the same in every RTS and mentioned Xbox, so for all I know you've been playing console your whole life and never touched the genre.

I can't fucking wait.

2024 might actually turn out alright when it comes to RTS:

+ Sins of a Solar Empire II Steam release (and it's good!)
+ Age of Mythology: Retold (all signs point at it being good. Thank God)
- Homeworld 3 totally missed the point of what made a Homeworld game a Homeworld game. The rogue-like mode is alright.

It's awesome! i''ve been playing it over the weekend on an ultrawide and it runs super smooth (3070), I tried every civ except for the nordics and I'm currently playing the campaign. I love that we are going to get 2 civs down the line (the chinense are going to be reworked, thanks to god).

Also: extra points for not having stupid achievements like playing 1000 matches like the extended edition, so that is great for people like myself who enjoy hunting achievements/trophies. I might go for 100%

Actually I haven't played that many lately. Primarily a console player now. I did play a little Starcraft a loooong time ago. But I was wanting to get into this and there is very little instructions on what does what (little controller command info). The 'tutorial' is the most basic tutorial I have ever played. Basically how to move and attack....I get that. But everything else is a free for all. Figure out how to progress and good luck figuring out how to do it. PC is usually pretty intuitive but console commands here need to be more laid out. Sorry if I offended you.

Don't forget 9-Bit Armies: a Bit Too Far and Tempest Rising!

Right. I forgot about Tempest Rising!

9-Bit Armies is... alright. A bit derivative if you've played 8-Bit Armies, though.
Yeah that's fair. I'm going to get it at some point though, if only for the brilliant title. :lollipop_beaming_smiling:
