Its a sexual signal...Before man learned to stand, all we ever got to see was ass. As we learned to stand upright, evolution kicked in and gave women another object of sexual desire...breasts. Have you not noticed that cleavage can resemble the high end of the butt? Female humans are also the only species of female to have enlarged breasts regardless if they are feeding or not which is more proof that breasts evolved for the purpose of atracting males.

Listen, I've seen the movie Total Recall. I've seen the woman with three breasts and let me tell you, she looked as natural as apple pie. Most mammals have roughly twice the number of nipples as the average number of children per pregnancy. Why? Well, because it worked. Natural selection and so on. Also, with mammals who raise their children over the course of many years, like humans, it's possible to still be nursing one child when you have your next. It's not common now, thanks to bottles, but a couple thousand years ago, you bet. Another possible reason is just to cover the possibility of twins, or double-size litters.
