Seems that core NVIDIA partners are set to inject a healthy dose of ‘customer centric’ love into those of us still running AGP mainboards with the introduction of an AGP 8x variant of its GeForce 7800GS.

This is good news for people with AGP pc's.

A Geforce 7300 is also expected to launch to cover the lower end of the market.

PCI-E isn't the future yet. That's why NVIDIA is releasing an AGP version of the card.

That being said, the next time I upgrade, I'll be sure to get a PCI-E motherboard.

I don't think there's a board available which can handle a CPU fast enough to take advantage of an AGP 7800. You'd probably get the exact same stats as a 6800GT or a x850. Why pay loads more for a dying system?!

More is more. If you have more fillrate you can step up the resolution easier, increase FSAA and AF with less of a hit. There is a benefit and it can be taken advantage of. Now, will it perform as good as when paired with a faster CPU and PCI-E? No. Will you see a benefit? In most cases - yes.

After replacing the monitor with a higher resolution wide screen LCD (1680x1050), I need to drop a lot of details and/or disable this and that to get the 9800 Pro to run COD2 acceptably (but still not smooth), a 7800 will ket me enable all of them plus the nifty effects, with AA and AF.

Not two days ago I ordered a 7800GT, but because my current setup is AGP I had to order a new MB as well. And since my new MB is a different socket type than what I had, I had to order a new CPU as well. There was nothing wrong with my current MB/CPU! I replaced them only so I could get a 7800, which was PCI-e.

W3RD! Although my fan died last week. Got a VGA Silencer, and will install it tonight. This bitch is huge!!! I really don't think it'll fit in my microATX case.

When the DX10 cards hit, they I'll get a new card, mobo and CPU.

You need to have a system to match your card. Putting a 7800 GTX PCIE in say a 3Ghz P4 with 1GB RAM isnt going to do it justice. You need to have the components to match. Its like buying good speakers but a crap sound card.

Thats hardly true. 939 pin (A64, A64X2) still has a lot of AGP based motherboards out there, namely the popular Nforce 3. Right now thats an available upgrade path all the way up to X2 4800+ and 2-4 gigs of low latency ram alongside an AGP slot. It makes sense for the vendors to still support AGP in that sense, as there certainly wont be a bottleneck there for quite some time. From a bandwith standpoint PCI-e was a hasty move as AGP isnt even taxed in games yet, but such is the nature of PC hardware.
