Alec Guiness was gay?

I read a friends gay magazine and there is an article on Alec Guiness's biography.

"By turns wry and pensive, dignified and disheveled, Alec Guiness was a consumate stage and film actor. And according to Read's exhaustive new authorized biography, it now emerges that, like many of us, he was often sexually attracted to beautiful young men. the author liberally peppers his 624 pages with such tasteful inferences as: "It seems reasonable to deduce [from diary entries] that Alec was, to say the least, alert to the possiblility of fleetng sexual relations with anonymous men."

Read makes the hardly unusual case that guiness's Catholocism, marriage, family life and career concerns combined to force him to remain closeted. Suprised? Well, as Boyd McDaniel once wrote, "Only real men get married and have children-like Oscar Wilde."

Hmmmm....hope I didn't shatter anyones childhoods. But I thought this may provide some entertainment on the boards tonight.

He wasn't gay? I thought he was openly gay. I mean, wasn't he?

being attracted to attractive, young men != gay.
the practice of older men seducing good looking young males was highly prevelant in ancient greece and japan.

I always suspected Patrck Stewart was gay.

Steward is straight. He tapped Counselor Troi for a while before marrying Wendy Neuss, an executive producer of STNG.

I sound like a nerd with this random fact.

Apparently Alec Guiness was married too.

heh, good show old chap. i used to fantasize about her all the time as a 12 year old boy.
but yeah, i dont think he is gay. next you guys will tell me peter o' toole is gay.

i could've told you that. the brown robe he wore in star wars? obvious emblem for an excrement-steeped condom. it's basic queer theory! heterosexuality is a disproved myth. duh.

Picard had a strong pimp hand. Can't say I knew he was banging Marina Sirtis though.

No fucking way Patrick was banging the Counselor. Was this before TNG because didn't she marry that guy from Whitesnake or some crappy hair band, like in the 2nd year of the series?

"It seems reasonable to deduce", wow. Nothing says "hard facts" quite like vague speculating deductions.

Although Sir Alec Guinness was, by some distance, the most distinguished artist of the three actors considered here, his protean personality makes him the least satisfactory biographical subject. O'Connor's recent book, Alec Guinness: The Unknown, went to inordinate lengths to prove the perfectly possible, but completely unsubstantiated surmise that Guinness was secretly gay. You might hope that Read's lengthy official trawl, produced with the cooperation of Guinness's family and apparently with the actor's dying blessing, would at least avoid beating the same spurious path. But no: great tracts are devoted to unenlightening speculation over Guinness's sexual proclivities, as if the definite proof that he had penchant for rough young boys might provide the key to his elusive ability.

And that is just what it is, speculation. Why is this even news now though? The book came out in 2003.

To comment on the topic, I think all this is bullshit. If the guy was gay then either he would have told someone or someone would have come out and said they banged him. All this talk is speculation based on 3rd hand recollections. To slander a man who's dead has got to be one of the lowest things a person can do.

Maybe Obi-wan isn't the one we should be looking at...

YODA: Use The Force. Now....feel it. Concentrate.
LUKE: Oh, no. We'll never get it out now.
YODA: So certain are you. Always with you it cannot be done. Hear you nothing
that I say?
LUKE: Master, moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.
YODA: No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you
have learned.
LUKE: All right, I'll give it a try.
YODA: No! Try not. Do. Or, do not. There is no try.
LUKE: I can't. It's too big.
YODA: Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hm? Mmmm.
And well you should not. For my ally is the Force. And a powerful
ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds
us and binds us. Luminous beings are we....not this crude matter. You
must feel the Force around you. Here, between you...me...the tree...
the rock...everywhere! Yes, even between this land and that ship!
LUKE: You want the impossible. I don't...I don't believe it.
YODA: That is why you fail.

Agreed, except for the part about slandering him. After all, it's not like being gay's a bad thing...

It does mean you're gay, or bisexual. And yes it was standard practice back in ancient Greece, and it's commonplace in countries like Japan. That doesn't change the fact that these men are bisexual/gay.

People will probably be shocked to find out what famous people were gay. Numerous painters (like Leonardo da Vinci and Michaelangelo), Isaac Newton, etc.

While I agree that being gay or called gay isn't wrong per se, in some parts of the world, and even the US being gay or even being labeled as one can cause one serious trouble up to and including death in some societies, look up the thread from last week about the two Iranian kids getting lynched because they were gay. While in the US people are not put to death because they are homosexual they are discriminated against in the workplace. I have a friend who is going through a situation with a bunch of rabble rousers who have decided to go about town telling people he is a homosexual among other things and he has told me that the stuff he has had to endure because people think he's a homosexual outstrips anything he has had happen to him because he is black.

Being sexually attracted to the same sex is the definition of being gay, genius.

Well yeah, I don't know if you would call it slander exactly, but it's not really respectful. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being a woman, but if the book said he was born a woman it wouldn't exactly be polite.

there is some funny commentary from B Singer on the xmen DVD about putting Ian in the magneto helmut
edit: not physically putting it on him, but just the circumstances

True, and I agree with what Silent Death said as well. Not exactly slander, but he is being misrepresented (if he isn't actually gay).

Bryan Singer is gay but he is probably the least gay acting guy in real interviews. On the Fox Searchlight website there is a very long interview with him and he is the direct opposite of what you'd expect after X-Men 1.5 documentaries.

I also read that Chuck Pahlaniuk is too.

Yup. Been living with his partner for years too. Since all or most of his novels have been written.

I had no idea Singer was gay.

I always *assumed* Alec Guinness was gay. John Gielgud was, and I think of them as semi-interchangable.

I always though Patrick Stewart was gay, too. I think Brent Spiner is.

No jackman is not gay...

It was only a part. he's a pretty talented stage actor...

He's been (happily?) married for years and has a couple kids. there's been rubmlings that he was banging some actress on the set lately.

Besides, it would break my wife's heart if he ended up "teh gay"... she swoons for that Aussie.

Patrick Stewart played a gay guy on Frasier. He was pretty convincing. :)

He also played a gay guy on a movie called Jeffrey I think it was? It was a movie about homosexuals from what I recall.

But all that means is that he's a great actor who can take on any kind of role (barring ethnicity)

So was Laurence Olivier - well, he reportedly had several affairs with men, anyway.
