ALERT: Atelier Iris already sold out at Amazon

If you want a copy for a reasonable price, get it ASAP. It's going to get rare fast.

Edit: looks like EB, Gamespot, and J&R are both sold out, too. You can still get it for $43 here.

time for me to make some monies

ebgames/gamestop store locator say new copies available at about 5 local stores

This game got a lot more press then Disgaea. La Pucelle and Phantom Brave dropped fast and are readily available. I really don't see this game becoming that rare, or at least going for more than list price anyway.

Well, that's what I thought at first, although I did get a copy at Fry's on release date anyway just in case. But it sold out two weeks after release date.. that's not something you see with many games.

I'd like an honest opinion from those who have played this--for a system that's glutted with quality RPGs, is this game worth $50? Reviews are so-so (7.2 at Gamespot, e.g.)

My local little game store had a copy on the wall and I got all excited and went to buy it...when they went to check they were actually out of stock...

I wanted it so bad. BUt I did end up gettimg the Digital Devil Saga box set to soothe my anger. Mmm box set

Uh, it's not uncommon for games to sell out early on. It's called "first shipment."

I was in Gamestop not an hour ago, and they had a STACK of these things. I think the game got enough press where it'll be at least semi-readily available. I'm waiting for a price drop, and if for some reason that doesn't happen, I'll just pick it up in a few months. The game seemed alright, but the voice cut offs and the bad load stuttering was just sloppy.

Amazon is pretty good about saying whether there are more copies coming. Even so, I think what I saw was illusory, because I checked again, and J&R actually has copies through their website, just not through Amazon. So I think I probably jumped the gun there...

As far as stories go, if you enjoyed stuff like Lunar, Grandia, and SoA there's a good chance you'll like what Atelier has. The battle system is pretty nice. It's fast and pretty strategic when it comes to certain boss fights. And synthetisizing rocks.

It's a solid RPG experience. It's fun, and has some funny dialogue. I'm enjoying it thus far. Check the thread, lots of good impressions in there.

Fuck. Is amazon going to restock?

Funny thing about Amazon is that they don't sell games themselves. They only do it through partner sites. Toys 'R' Us is the only retailer I'm aware of that only sells online through Amazon; J&R and Gamestop are the other major partners. I'm thinking now, upon closer examination, that these retailers have reached an agreement to stop selling through Amazon. Amazon is OK with that, because they get huge commissions from the individual resellers..

F*ck. How are my changes of getting it next week (22nd of july) at Toys 'R Us NY? I wanted to buy it when I'm on holliday there, along with a NTSC PS2

My GameStop had them. Don't limit yourself to one store, I doubt you'll have too many problems.

I was in my local EB for a second tonight asking about the game, they're getting more copies in a day or two. Not sure how many, but maybe that's an indication they're making more copies due to quick sell? Anyway, good news for folks like me who looked at it at release and decided to wait.

Atelier Iris is back in stock; meanwhile, Riviera is going for $75, and DDS is going for $56.
Riviera is only being sold by one person (a price shark). I wouldn't call it "going for."

Considering -this- price shark sold a copy for $70, yes, I think it's fair to say it would actually fetch that amount. Ebay is clogged with forgeries from China and Hong Kong. There's still one place left to buy it online - gameexpress.com - but I don't know how long that will last.

Legit:

and yes

Questionable:

Given ATLUS's distribution system, I expect retailers to be selling small batches of it for at least another month. Paying $70 for it is idiotic.

www.videogameplus.ca also has it... great game btw.

Holy fuck, thanks for that link. That's a pretty sweet site, I've been looking for a decent alternative to ebgames.com/eBay?Amazon/et all because of the exchange rate price gouging and Futureshop/Bestbuy.ca because of the lacking selections they have when it comes to more niche stuff.

My Gamestop of choice has 2 used and new each for $45/$50, respectively; so it's probable that distribution and demand has varied by location, thus fueling the price speculation on amazon.

Hate to break it to you, but "price speculation" on Amazon consists of listing a game for a random amount over MSRP and waiting for people to bite. ;) I would never have thought it would work, but I've been able to sell everything I listed. I wussed out on Atelier Iris and sold it for $49.99 when it was out of stock, and I don't regret it. I don't think it'll be really elusive.

This is a strange period with all these NIS releases coming out so close to one another, and all of them in limited batches. I guess there's something to be said for nurturing a market...

That's just it, they're speculating that it'll be a 50k run, be a new to NA series that catches fire like Disgaea did, and they make out like bandits. I remember stories of Disgaea and Shadow Hearts 2 and the like being called "hard to find" (before Disgaea's second issuing, of course), yet I found my new copy of Disgaea amongst 3 other new ones at this one GS, and the dude said the others nearby had it in some form as well.

Even I'm being swamped by niche RPG goodness, so you know it's coming in bucketfulls. Granted, I'd rather have them and be behind playing them than not have them at all, of course. Hopefully it isn't saturating the market...

That might be what the limited print runs are about. Even with all the new releases, the stores are hardly being flooded with Nippon Ichi RPGs... quite the opposite, in fact.

Bingo. Those 50k copies often go to us RPG fiends; but some areas with less demand get more, others few if any; but some people can't find them in their areas, so like you said, the amazon prices.

I just wish they would make one for the Xbox so I can actually play it. I bought Phantom Brave to play, but my brother monopolizes the PS2... I'm definitely getting Generation of Chaos when it comes out, good or no, just so I can taste what I've been peddling.

"All these"? They're only releasing 2 titles this year...

Well, "good or no," Generation of Chaos isn't made by Nippon Ichi, so you may want to start somewhere else. ;)

DDS, DDS2, Atelier Iris and Makai Kingdom within the space of about 4 months, plus Phantom Brave, La Pucelle and a few other recent releases still scattered on shelves across the country.

Dang.. what has Idea Factory done that I might be familiar with?

DDS and DDS2 were released by Atlus.

Makai Kingdom, Atelier Iris, Phantom Brave, and La Pucelle were all released by NIS.

The two companies have no relation to one another, correct? I continue to see posts stating otherwise.

Nevermind.. I keep getting mixed up. Atlus and NIS definitely seem to be going after the same market in the same way lately, though.

The connections between the two companies are: a)Atlus published a few of Nippon Ichi's games here (Disgaea & Rhapsody) before NIS America was started, and b)Atlus is NIS America's distributor. That's as far as it goes, I believe.

As for them vying for the same market? Yeah, that's pretty much the situation. Atlus, Agetec, Working Designs, NIS America, and (on one occassion) Mastiff all go after the same niche for the most part... And surprisingly, they've all been able to carve out their own fanbase, without cannibalizing eachother in the process. Well, so far, at least.

Also, just to nitpick for a moment, La Pucelle: Tactics was published by Mastiff Games, not NIS America. :P

I honestly don't follow import titles very often, and with Generation of Chaos being the first Idea Factory title to make it to the states... well, you'll just have to ask somebody else. ;)

Sure they're niche, but different kinds of niche. I mean to use Atlus and Nippon Ichi as examples, Atlus tends to publish darker stuff like their Megaten games whereas Nippon Ichi tends to publish chibi-cutesy stuff like Atelier Iris. Opposite sides of the same coin almost.
