Alien Isolation PC Performance thread

My GTX 660 can do 60 fps no prob, now lets see if this game is actually worth the space on my HDD, the commercial looked pretty good.

No self character shadows is really strange, considering how optimized the game is.

Anyone think there's a way to turn it on in the configs for the game?

It's super fucking buggy, but...

sup dudes.

Right now, due to limitations of VorpX, no positional tracking (only skyrim has positional tracking right now, but it's supposed to be coming next update for all games), just orientation tracking. But DAMN this is awesome.

Strange, I was getting some dips below 60 in the first room where you have control of Amanda. 3xGTX680 SLI setup, cards working at ~25% usage. Didn't have any dips walking around the ship though. Weird. Playing at 1620p.

EDIT: Disabled vsync to see I'm getting 200 FPS, but if I look in certain directions it dips to ~80. If I move forward a few feet without moving the camera it jumps back up to 200. Seems weird. Maybe an unstable SLI profile.

Don't shit your pants.

Not played much just a bit of the Crew Expendable DLC (to test out settings etc) and I'm getting 120fps with everything on Ultra, 75 FoV, no film grain.

GTX 780 3GB
i5 4670k 3.4 GHz
16GB RAM
playing at 1680x1050

Yep. But I like it. I hate seeing my own body in first person view. It always looks super weird.

BTW guys, how do you enable SMAA T2X? I only have T1X.

I went back an option. Like, it defaulted for me SMAA TX1 and I clicked the "back" arrow and it went to SMAA TX2 and again to FXAA. Seems weird. Also withthe FoV stuff clicking the "back" arrow increases it.

K, so after a bunch of blind testing, I've finally figured out the exact steps to reliably get this running in VR:

-open VorpX, select "use no profile" so that you can manually set your IPD (using the oculus profile screws up the convergence on my box)

-Open the game. the first time I run the game, no matter what, I get a black full-screen display on my monitor, but I can hear the videos playing in the background. Wait for these videos to finish and dump you to the main menu

-hit alt-enter to go into windowed mode (no matter what I set my in-game settings to, I seem to have to do this). The screen should now be visible, albeit in 2D

-press delete to bring up the vorpX menu. The vorpX logo should be corrupted and taking up most of the screen, making seeing the options difficult, but find the "ok and save" button and click it, it's the second from the right at the bottom of the menu

-while still in window mode, quit alien isolation

-restart alien isolation. it should now begin in windowed mode, with two viewports, on your monitor (even if your rift is the primay display)

-press win+shift+right (or left) to move display to your rift

enjoy! The ship in this game is extremely cramped, which is honestly awesome. Sometimes the injection driver will simply stop working correctly all together if you keep quitting and reentering the game. A reboot solves this.

Unfortunately VorpX's gamepad emulation dealy gets in the way of xinput, so the moment you try to use the gamepad, it reverts to gamepad control and you completely lose headtracking. So you need to play this with KB&M.

That said, this with a steam controller is pretty awesome right now for that very reason.

On the whole the game looks really good (still in the beginning), but it's missing that wee bit of extra polish. NPCs are the worst offenders so far, their animations and lip-sync takes me out of it.

Just a random shot, max settings, 1440p -> 1080p.

Incidentally, even with the injection driver and rendering two stereoscopic viewports, this game runs like a champ on my rig. No judder in VR, seems to be hitting a high refresh rate. Very pleased with the performance.

Would you say vorpx is worth it for this game?

Eh

VorpX is only ever "worth it" if you extremely temper your expectations. I honestly am hesitant to ever recommend VorpX, ever, because it's not how VR is done right. But in this instance it's too neat for me to pass up. I'm glad I already had it. I probably wouldn't have bought it for this, but since I already had it laying around, it's getting more use right now than it has in the last year.

That said it's only like $40 and it's neat to play with.

The ship really is amazing in VR, though. It comes across as kinda small on a normal monitor (you can tell early on because your head is so close to the ceiling) but in VR it feels claustrophobic. It's really tight, just like you'd expect a space ship to be.

I'm holding off on a proper playthrough right now because I want to live stream this. But I can imagine running from the alien in these tight spaces will be horrifying.

SMAA T2X only works with single GPU for me. Assuming it is not SLI compatible option. Suck as it cleans up the jaggies better than T1X...

I'm so tempted to buy VorpX just for this and Bioshock Infinite. I know it's not that expensive but I hate the hasty monetization idea on immature technology such as OR. Guess I'll end up waiting for an official OR patch. Finger crossed.

If nothing else, this version of VorpX for DK2 is super early because it only supports 3DOF headtracking, i.e. no positional tracking. Skyrim, their test game, supports full 6DOF tracking and they said an update releasing soon will expand all games to 6DOF tracking, but right now, it's a lot like going back to DK1, albeit with a much better screen.

SOOOOO on the subject of Oculus Rift support, modders are already diving into the game and finding bits and pieces of the original Oculus Rift support still in there.

If an official patch doesn't come, perhaps a mod will soon enough.

If they get it working then I'm all in for picking this up. I hate using VorpX, it was such a pain for me getting it to run on BF3 just so i could play the flying mission lol. I honestly haven't touched my DK2 in a couple of weeks but this has definitely got me interested in messing about with it some more.

Edit: Well I guess i couldn't pass up on a cheap AMD promo key, gonna use the steps you posted earlier for VorpX this weekend probably.

I can't run the latest drivers at the moment due to the fact I'm running sli boards in
a crossfire only system, I have to run a hack to get sli, to run, this hack won't support the latest drivers at the moment, could you post the current profile for alien isolation?
just the sli compatability bits will do for now.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! I put that bit setting in, added ai.exe, set 2 gpu's, and set afr2 mode,
both 560's being fully utilized, and I'm holding a solid 60 fps (vsync on), with 1 560 I
was getting between 45 - 50 fps, this is with all settings maxed at 1920 x 1080.
nvidia inspector is a nice utility to have for stuff like this.

Posted this in the OT, but here might be better; I don't mean to spam.

Having a nasty issue on PC. Ran fine the first time, got a surprisingly poor framerate in the first room, alt tabbed out to find if it was a serious problem (I saw that others had experienced this and it's apparently isolated?), it crashed, now it crashes on boot with a black screen with the reported fault module being gameoverlayrenderer.dll, which is related to the Steam overlay. I tried disabling the overlay, same result. Need help.

EDIT: Works if I rename gameoverlayrenderer.dll. It's an annoyance, so I'd still appreciate advice on how to get the game working with the overlay, but it's not as urgent.

Just use AFR not AFR2. Runs far better.

Tried afr mode, the framerate sharply dropped to under 10 fps, setting back to afr2
mode put it back at 60 fps, I'd say use whatever mode works for you, the difference is
probably what video drivers we're running, I'm running 335.23.

Shit anti-aliasing and baked lighting. No wonder this game runs so good :-p

So far it's scary tho

EDIT: Oh shit my bad, I didn't know I could scroll down the options.

------

That's strange, I'd say either the game is corrupted or steam itself is (not likely), my
only advice is to run a cache verify, or uninstall the whole game and re-install. If I
have a issue with the steam overlay, I usually get a bluish tint in the game video
(any game I'm running), and I have to turn the overlay off then, also check your
sli profile for this game, make sure it's set properly, having the wrong compatibility
settings for dx/dx 11 can cause all kinds of problems, I've actually fixed this for
myself before by adjusting the compatibility bits.

Try exiting things like shadowplay, fraps and rivatuner (runs alongside afterburner. it's the system info overlay)
Those can often conflict with many games causing them to crash if you run them alongside. Though I've had no trouble running this game with all three running at once as well as Steam.
