I guess this is the OT.

Really looking forward to this. I hope they get it right. I want to be cowering in a corner clutching my pulse rifle with my man nappy on praying it didn't see me.

Alien: Rogue Incursion reviewed by Travis Northup on PSVR 2, also available on PC.

Alien: Rogue Incursion is a faithful and entertaining stab at bringing Alien to virtual reality. The excellent story, spot-on Alien environments, and creepy Xenomorphs keep the horrifying times going throughout its eight-hour duration – even when repetitive combat, predictable AI, and the odd bug here and there make it clear this is the first attempt that it is. But while there’s plenty of room for this budding series to grow, I can already happily recommend Rogue Incursion as a strong proof of concept to Alien fans and newcomers alike – one that’s left me eagerly awaiting part two.

Yeah, I figured one of my fears about this game was going to be right and that is it's the same enemies over and over again.

It seems like that's the problem with a lot of Alien games. There's just not a good variety of xenomorph types. One cool thing about Aliens Dark Descent was that it changed up things a bit and introduced more variety especially toward and at the end.

I read there are a couple of scenes that are a standout for the franchise in general. Not just the games, but the movies too. I think with a patch or two this could be an 8/10 game. The foundation is there for a good mix of fear and Marine style combat from the films.

As a fan of the first two movies that is always disappointed in everything the franchise has since produced (except some scenes / parts of the new movies), a simple game based on those two is perfectly fine with me.

I loved Isolation (and it's also playable in VR too), so this seems right up my alley.

Enemy variety in an Alien game is not something I'm expecting, either. Nothing is better than those xeno fuckers.

Additional reviews for those interested:

TechRadar: 4/5
Alien: Rogue Incursion is one of the better survival horror VR games I’ve played, with a superb setting that's let down by monsters that are scary in not quite the right ways.
Press Start: 8.5/10
The game is easily greater than the sum of its parts, taking common Alien tropes and elevating them with a thoughtful and fulfilling VR presentation. But I also feel like I’ve seen everything it offers – from a gameplay perspective, it feels like the Goldilocks principle.
Hardcore Gamer: 4.5/5
Rogue Incursion offers more of a traditional survival horror design thanks to its pacing, ammo conservation, puzzle solving and atmosphere. The pacing is what dictates this game, and while there may not be a ton of enemies on screen at once, it's about being enthralled in the position of a facility overtaken by Xenomorphs.
Stuff: 4/5
A faithful, ground-up VR Alien experience fans have been waiting for. It’s not as absorbing as Isolation was, but Rogue Incursion still gets plenty right.

** SPOILER WARNING**

This video contains major spoilers showing key plot elements of the game's story... viewer discretion is advised!

Alien: Rogue Incursion has now launched on PlayStation VR2 and SteamVR so here is a graphics comparison between the two systems.

Posted my first impressions in the VR2 OT but I'll post some here too. So far it feels like a Resident Evil VR game but Aliens, and I'm really digging it. Playing on the hardest difficulty is incredibly punishing but satisfying when you gain progress

HOWEVER, there is something scummy that happened with the release of this game: it launched with a "Part One" subtitle. There was NO mention that the story would be split in two prior to release, but now both the Steam page and PSN page have been updated with a blurb that states this is part one of a two part story. Huh? We were sold an incomplete story?

I thought about making a thread about it but maybe I'm just overreacting?

Half a game, eh?

Cunts :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Won’t be buying that then.
It has a cliffhanger type of ending. They really should have let people know that this was going to be that way but maybe they felt people wouldn't buy it if they knew it ended in a cliffhanger.

I'll just wait to play the whole thing when they put the second part out. Plenty of other games!

Put a little bit of time into it. Have some gripes, but overall it's not too bad so far, with plenty of room to impress me more. I love the aesthetic, and the game is clearly very Resident Evil inspired in a good way. The methods of interaction ground you in the world, and everything is designed and looks right out of the first two movies. We've seen it all before, sure, but enjoying it in VR is really special and makes me want to explore and see everything. We're always short of big budget VR titles, but having one this well made and in the Alien universe? 2024 closing out strong. With that said, I have two big gripes: image quality and combat.

The game uses Unreal Engine, and on my PC (i9 10900k, RTX3090, 64GB RAM) I can't seem to find any settings at all that deliver good image quality. Coming from titles like Project Cars 2 and Half-Life Alyx, both of which have frankly pristine image quality and generally very impressive visuals all around, Rogue Incursion looks very noisy thanks to Unreal Engine. The usual Unreal Engine flicker in lights, AA, and textures is all present, and frankly this stuff looks horrible in VR. There are artefacts basically everywhere. Epic settings, TSA, and 1.2SS does next to nothing to fix the image quality. Unreal Engine was a mistake. I ended up dropping the game to High settings, Epic AA, TSA, and 1.0SS to get the game as smooth as possible; if it can't look perfect, it might as well run perfect.

With the combat, I feel like I've missed a step. The sidearm seems to be virtually useless(?), so I'm using the pulse rifle. But the enemies are fast enough that I can't draw the rifle when I need it. So I'm walking around with the rifle in my hand. But the rifle is too hard to aim one handed? So I'm forced to physically ADS, meaning I can't use the motion tracker. So, am I supposed to walk through the game ADS with the rifle? Or am I fucking something up here?

In any case, it's seems pretty good so far, with not great image quality thanks to Unreal Engine, and some combat quirks I gotta work through.

Haven't played an Alien game since Alien 3 on the SNES (i liked that one a lot, very good GFX and music, and a non-linear, objective-based structure, very rare for the time!)

Gaming has had a love affair with the movie alien franchise, so I would encourage everyone to go buy Alien Isolation.
Will do once it has an official VR version.

The thumbnail on this video is enough for me to nope out of playing this. Love VR, but the one thing I can't handle is stuff like that jumping at me. Almost dropped Alyx at that section where you get the torch and some black headcrabs turn up. They already made my skin crawl on Half Life 2, but no surprise it was even worse in VR. Nothing else bothers me, can play for hours with no motion sickness, but can't handle bugs, aliens etc jumping at the screen. Then this Alien game got Facehuggers? In VR? My skins already crawling :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I thought about making a thread about it but maybe I'm just overreacting?

So the devs tried to address the whole Part One thing:

I don't know if I really buy that explanation but whatever... I'm 9 hours into the game and I've had a mostly good time (enemy spawns are too frequent) so I'd say I got my money's worth. But telling people that the game ends in a cliffhanger isn't exactly conducive to the story they're telling... (major spoilers)The main character gets impregnated by a facehugger and then later inhales pathogen. By telling us there's a cliffhanger, we know she lives...

Got a 1.5 update today on PS5. Talk of Alien Spawn reduction. Cant find patch notes to confirm though.

Beat the game just now.

If you're an Alien fan, you'll probably like this game... but I can't recommend it in its current state. As I mentioned before, the relentless spawn of Aliens unfortunately sours the game for me... and no, they did not address it in a patch yet. I tried walking slowly in an attempt to minimize sounds to attract aliens (like in Isolation), but as far as I can tell it doesn't make a significant difference and they just spawn at timed intervals. I just want to explore the damn facility and find intel but the game doesn't want you to.

It's also pretty buggy. The Alien pathfinding is actually kinda impressive with the amount of surfaces they can crawl on, but they get stuck fairly often. The final boss glitched out for me and just clawed at the air lol. Also some of the VR mechanics are extremely finicky, which makes for some frustrating moments during combat.

As for the story, it's not good. It feels like you're dropped into the middle of an ongoing story and then prematurely ends just when things start to get interesting. And as I said, I couldn't really enjoy the ambient storytelling because it's constantly interrupted by aliens spawning.

6/10
I recommend holding off until it's patched and bundled with the second game for a reasonable price.
