Aliens: Colonial Marines. Time for a replay because of Aliens Romulus.

And it's a much better game than I remember. Those updates sure make a difference.
Playing on my OLED steam deck.

Why play that shit when the infinitely superior Alien: Isolation is right there, and is more in theme with the movie ?

Hell, the movie has multiple easter eggs to that game. Fede took direct inspiration from it.

You could also check out the Alien versus Predator games, or that other beat'em'up one for the arcades. Bet any of those are better than Colonial Marines.

Because the best movies are two and isolation is in theme with only one of them. If you want to squash some bugs, it ain't it.

Anyway, Colonial Marines has always been one of my guilty pleassures and have more hours logged on steam than I care to admit. It's trash, but enjoyable trash and at least the technical issues are mostly fixed. Considering it can be had for the price of a coffee, I've always recommended it to fans of Aliens or mindless shooting.

The 2001 Monolith one, Alien Versus Predator 2, is one of my favorite FPS games of all time.

One of the early examples of a really good inter-connected campaigns from all 3 species.

The updates didn't really fix much, but it's kinda decent with fan mods

I like how there was a typo in the ini that made the AI dumber

I purchased Colonial Marines when it came out, played it a little, extreme disappointment set in and then I never touched it till maybe a year or two ago and finally finished it. I'm okay with never touching that game again and hope Randy (gearbox) is banned from having anything to do with the franchise.

Alien Isolation, Fireteam Elite and Aliens Dark Descent hit the spot and soon Rogue Incursion (I hope).

Regarding Alien Romulus.
I didn't like the new teenie bopper characters and some of the plot, I felt like there was way more that could have done with that awesome station (Romulus and Remus). Following the original crew of that station would have been a way more exciting story.

Alien Isolation is great, but it's a survival game.

I get where the OP is coming from. Sometimes you just want to go full 1986 Aliens and hunt some bugs.

I'd love to see a new FPS set in the Alien universe. Specifically one based on this gem.

The Alien game that came out last year is pretty good. It is more of a RPG/real-time strategy game. Just make sure you set the controls to pause when giving orders on console.

I respect you revisiting it, but man, as a huge fan, I'd highly recommend Aliens Fireteam Elite and/or Alien Isolation over that. Very different games for sure, but great experiences for different reasons IMO. Dark Descent is really good too if that's a game style you're into.

Hell, the last most recent Aliens Vs Predator game is a better experience than Colonial Marines, IMO.

I remember reading that things were done to make it more presentable, and that's cool. I still played the game to completion when it first came out. It wasn't THAT bad, I thought. But what it was MEANT to be was SO much more, and that was where it hurt the most. Then knowing people that worked at Timegate and hearing about how all of that went down didn't help, and made me despise Gearbox even more, lol.

There's an Isolation save point, but what else?

The movie took more inspiration from Aliens than Isolation. Well, I guess it's less inspiration from Aliens and more copy 1:1 from Aliens...

In any case, Colonial Marines is canon (until the day that someone in an official capacity says it isn't) so that's reason enough for Alien fans to play it, even though it's not that good of a game.

There's a few things

At least 4 Isolation phones before some action.
The cattle prod / stun gun the fookin watah guy uses is exactly the same design as the game
Early in the movie when they first land in the station, they prime a generator pretty much identically to the game
The plot point of the Xenos not charging rain and Andy when they have the rifle aimed is something that you can do in the game with the flamethrower.
The ending with the station crashing into the asteroid belt is also like Sebastopol crashing into the gas giant at the end of the game.

I'll admit I play every so often as a guilty pleasure, but if you're not playing with TemplarGFX's mod then you must be some kinda masochist

Yeah I played CM after the patches and some mods and enjoyed it well enough. It is pretty atmospheric in places and just being the in movie locations is inherently cool as fuck.

Isolation is still the best Alien game of course.

I wish we would get some new AAA singleplayer immersive Alien games. Some shooter, some horror, and some RPG like the one from Obsidian that was canceled.

Not to mention Dark Descent or even Fireteam Elite, both much superior products.

Yeah. Just want to hunt some bugs.

Yeah. Just want to hunt some bugs.

If you want a shooter in the universe, I would also recommend Fireteam Elite.

Good, dumb fun, kinda shooter.

Completely playable solo but optionally you can play upto 4 player co-op.

In fairness they are very different genres.

But yeah if you want to get the Alien movie vibe play Isolation and become hysterical.

I don't understand why this is made into some big funny thing. An ini file is just like any other resource. Configuration bugs are some of the most likely bugs to make it to production as they rarely stop a build from completing and configuration bugs such as AI behaviour must be an absolute nightmare to catch in test. Easy mistake to make imo.

Gearbox were hardly gonna make it a priority to track this down when the whole building was burning down around them at release.
