All-time best decade for a software developer?

German Shocks

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief and Nosiest Dildo Archeologist
My contenders:

FromSoftware 2010's:

Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, and all the DLCs plus a couple great remasters (Dark Souls 2 PTDE, Dark Souls Remastered).

Valve 2000's:

Half-Life 2 plus both episodes, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2

Capcom 2000's:

Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, Resident Evil 5, ... and a lot more too many to list

Team Ninja 2000's:

Ninja Gaiden Black, Ninja Gaiden 2, Dead or Alive 4

Nintendo is probably up there too but feels like cheating to include them sometimes.

It's not strictly a decade but in 7-8 years Blizzard created Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and LoD, Starcraft, Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft.

Not just great games but genre defining ones, the father of ARPG's, the father of MOBA's, one of the games to define the RTS genre and WoW which is one of the most important games ever made and still the MMO to beat.

Nowadays in 7 years a developer can create a sequel and a remake at best lmao

Rare/Rareware in 90s

No one even comes close.
Nintendo still, bro

I can say that picking a dev group is too hard by era. There was so much greatness... But picking an era?! 90s

We saw three whole different generations in one decade, and games, plural, year over year, pushing the industry ahead and keep on giving. Also, lots of documentaries shows that the devs have a lot of fun, so it was a win - win scenario back in those days

Even thou I can say the 2000s were the best decade for gamers, for devs was the change of habits and publishers fucked with a lot with them. EA still has stains from being the worst company in the world because of their shit

Blizzard in the 2000s: we got Diablo II, Lord of Destruction, WarCraft III, Forzen Throne and World of WarCraft and the two best expansions for it: Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King.
Westwood Studios in the 90s: we got Eye of the Beholder 1 & 2, Dune II (arguably the first RTS. At the very least, it's the RTS that everyone else iterated upon), Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun, Dune 2000 (although that has been developed by an external studio) and Blade Runner.
Origin Systems in the 90s: Ultima VI and VII, Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 (although outsourced), Wing Commander 1 to 5, The Crusader Games, Ultima Online.
id Software in the 90s: Wolfenstein 3D (not the first FPS but the FPS everyone else iterated upon), Doom, Doom II, Quake, Quake II, Quake III.
Bungie in the 2000s: Myth II, Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST.

EA 2000's, back when they were actually godlike and not the soulless shadow they are today.

If we're talking strictly games developed by studios they owned, and not just published:

- Need for Speed series (including underground 2/most wanted)
- Medal of Honour Series (Frontline/Allied Assault)
- The Sims 2
- SSX Tricky/3
- Battlefield Series (up to Bad Company)
- Burnout Revenge/Paradise (3 was published by them but they didn't own criterion till a month after it launched)
- Command and Conquer (Red Alert 2, Generals)
- FIFA Street
- Skate
- Dead Space
- Mass Effect (bioware acquired just before release)
- Dragon Age Origins

I believe these were all developed by studios owned by EA during the 2000's.

Sega 90's
Home console output as well as there arcade games was peak sega. From the mega drive to the Saturn (segas output was amazing on it) leading into Dreamcast. Model 2 to 3 arcade games. Noone else comes close.

DAYTONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
GAME OVER YEAAAAAAAAAA

Seeing it written out like that really hammers home how crazy the state they're in now is compared to what they used to put out. Bonkers.

Capcom in the 2000s already mentioned but I'll go with their 90s lineup.

Origin in the 90s creating the Wing Commander series and the Ultima series.

In 1990 they hit their stride with Wing Commander, and Ultima expansions.
94 - System Shock, WC3 - the greatest FMV game.
95 Bioforge
96-Crusader No Remorse, JANES combat games.

They had Richard Garriiott as a founder. Chris Roberts as a designer. Sold to EA and eventually shutters them.

  • Ultima series — a long-running RPG saga with rich lore and immersive manuals.
  • Wing Commander series — pioneering space combat games.
  • Crusader series — military strategy games.
  • System Shock — a landmark sci-fi horror RPG.
  • Ultima Online (1997) — one of the first graphical MMORPGs, a major milestone in online gaming

Namco in the 90's were on fire with their PlayStation exclusives.

A very strong argument could be made for Capcom in the 2020's too. They are pumping out bangers right now.

90s and early 2000s. Game development was difficult and the people who made games and the technology actually wanted to make games out of passion.
