So I'm stuck using an old computer with Windows XP service pack 2 (Microsoft wont let me upgrade to sp 3) Therefor I can't use MSN messenger.

I have a lot of contacts on messenger so I would like to be able to still connect with them... what's out there right now?

Technically I think you can use some sort of web widget if you are logged into live.com or hotmail.com too

I don't have much advice but I thought everybody now just uses facebook/google chat. I logged into yahoo messenger a few days ago to do a video chat with somebody who doesn't know how to use google video chat and there was absolutely nobody active on the contacts list.

Ahh cool. I love chrome. I can actually surf the internet on 256 MB's of ram.
