Am I the only one who watched Barbarians?

Watched this over the last couple days and I loved it, the Romans looked great, the barbarians looked great and Thusnelda was hot as fuck

Its a netflix dramatization of the true story about the rebellion of Arminius, a German chiefs son who was forcefully taken and raised in Rome. It follows his return to Germania and his getting the German tribes to rise up against the Romans. The Romans speak Latin, the Germans German and its pretty fucking great. Climax is the real life battle of Teutoburg forest

Some amazing scenes with decent acting, the crucifixion of the entire family of one of the characters, the meeting of the chiefs as well as the final battle, only a little bit of stronk woman and no inserting minorities to make it modern. Just meds vs krauts

Hope it gets picked up for a second season

I watched the first episode. Seemed cool enough, but shit got busy in RL but I'm going to get back into it.

can you explain to us non germans why they wouldnt use the name of the actual woman?
It's just that it's almost an insult to call a woman a "Thusnelda" here in Germany.

I didn't know about the historical figure she was.
Makes sense that she is called by her name in the series off course.

Still funny.

@Damn, get back your old avy, KoF. I don't recognize you anymore immediately... ;)

I don't know why.
Don't have any idea where this comes from.

Calling a girl or woman a "Thusnelda" or the modern short form "Tussi" is a bit like calling her a slut, or at least saying she is stupid and just looks and no brain.

How weird, even here in Latvia for those who took history lessons we learned that was the name of the wife of Arminius, i find it strange that native Germans wouldnt know it and stranger still that its almost slang for slut.

How much of the story is common knowledge there?

It's taught in history lessons here. Everybody knows about 'Hermann und die Schlacht am Teutoburger Wald', Hermann being his german name.
Personally I haven't known about his wife. I guess her name is being taught as well and I might have forgotten it. It's definitely not common knowledge here, imo. Hermann's name and his deeds are, though.

Been planning to watch it soon. Love the historical backdrop and how they don't just have everyone speaking modern British English.

I really, really enjoyed that series too.

Great visuals. And the story is actually incredible, once you realize that this stuff is actually pretty historically accurate (minus the romantic side story, and the role of Thushnelda)

How historically accurate is it?

One of my pet hates with any historical TV show or film is when widely historically inaccurate.

I stopped watching half way through the first episode. The poor english voice dub was too distracting and annoyed me.

From reading this, I gathered that the answer to your question is, yes, only you have seen Barbarians.

It is pretty accurate history wise. His wife Thusnelda was eventually kidnapped in another battle when the Romans retaliated. She was lost to history after that. Eventually the Romans gave up due to internal struggles. I am not sure how much more they can show except that.

I started watching this because of this thread and am almost halfway through.

I like that they speak in German and Latin, and it carries the history pretty well.

The pacing is plodding though. I didn’t really care about Arminus’ spat with his old friends or the inter-tribe rivalries with people you just got to know.

I barely got to know Hodor for an episode before he was gone and if Thusnelda goes from struggling to cut down log posts with an axe to lightsabering Romans later on, my eyes will roll hard.

Still going to keep watching for Teutoberg forest.

This is one of the rare times inserting minorities would have worked, being that a portion of the Roman Empire would have been from North Africa. At least two of the governors of Britannia were thought to be African. #BLM Britannia Lives Matter.

Just wrapped it up. Enjoyed it overall. A second season has already been greenlit. Curious as to where they can take it though.

I watched it last week and thought it was decent enough that if they made a second season I would watch it. I felt the story was a bit rushed at times, especially towards the end but I get it...only 6 episodes to work with and no guarantee there will be a season 2.

Definitely worth the watch if you're into these types of shows.

It's decent. It suffers from having just that village set used over and over though. And Armenius looks too roman IMHO.

Thusnelda though, she is pretty cute. Hopefully she has more than that one scene (I'm on ep 4 or 5).

Watch it being cancelled like Marco Polo.... (fuck you Netflix)

It's already been renewed. I'm not sure it's more than a 2-3 season show max anyway if it's following the history books though.

As for Marco Polo, fun as it was, it was hideously expensive by all accounts due to the sheer scale and opulence and it just wasn't landing in terms of audience.

Maybe that's why it was the best show Netflix have ever produced. Yes, you could see that it cost a lot but it was totally worth it IMHO. Shame that people rather watch stuff like Game of Thrones instead.
