Amanda Winn Lee telling Evangelion fans to "Learn Japanese and translate yourself or eat a dick. Either way STFU" in recent tweet about translation

Shut up wench!
Fansubbers are unironically better most of the time because they don't try and americanized things and take liberties.

Isn't this all spawning because fan subbers put in some homosexual subtext but the direct and correct translation does not have it so the usual crowd are all pitchfork and torches or is it the opposite

Can anyone really blame her though? Just imagine twenty years of weebs bitching and whining. I totally agree with her, learn Japanese and translate it yourself if you don't like it you fuckin nerds.

She sounds like she needs some piping.

I imagine dealing with people like that when you are trying to do your job is difficult. However, as I always say, taking things like this to Twitter (of all places) as if it's going to accomplish anything good and not stir the pot is superfluous.

Please note this take is coming from someone who has no idea what the context of the situation is as I don't watch the anime nor care about official vs. fansubs.

Ah yes, I should've also noted I don't watch anime not care about official vs. fansubs. I do however understand the level of irritating cringe present in the weeb community and can only imagine what two decades of dealing with that must do to ones psyche. And yeah, taking anything like this to Twitter is the exact opposite of what someone should do cause Twitter isn't exactly known for logical and rational reactions to things.

Or maybe she could do a good job the first time. 🤷

If you fuck up, it's on you. Not the people who call you out

Seriously. If you've been doing the same shit for 20 years and people are bitching maybe you're the one in the wrong.

What led to them doing a new translation for this Netflix version anyway? I really don't know much about the series or about anime in general. I'm curious to watch this because I've always heard it's crazy. But I was surprised to hear the subtitles are different.

i see where people are coming from tho, if you're tasked with doing something then you should do it right

on the flip side, i really like the original ff6 translation by woolsey because it's so very woolsey

I have a soft spot for shitty old anime dubs but now I know better and want something that isn't bs

And you people defend these shitty dub "actors". Reap what you sow.

Example number 3,846,195,207 as to why social media is fucking cancer.

Use it as a vehicle to lash out/vent at your own peril, because letting your emotions pull you to your smartphone or tablet to fire your hot take in response settles nothing. It actually fosters similar or worse responses, and shit gets worse from there. And, once you air it for everyone to see, you earn whatever shit you get from then on.

I've never heard of this person until now, and my first impression is that she's batshit crazy. You can't delete a first impression. Ever.

she's right. people will spend 20 years complaining rather than learn a new language.

there are now at least 2 translations to choose from for English speakers. if it's so important to you to understand the original intent then the tools are all there for you to do so. only thing stopping it is laziness.

TBF Evangelion fans can be just as crazy as a dub actress telling people to eat a dick on social media.

A little tip on dubs: No one will ever be happy, there will never be consensus on anime, only a vocal minority will shut up and enjoy.

A little tip on subs: No one will ever be happy, there will never be consensus on anime, only a vocal minority will shut up and enjoy.

So don't tweet about it, ignore it, don't bother AT ALL!

Have you all noticed that nobody actually bitches at foreing movie translations outside anime? I mean, not as vocally!

I mean on the one hand, there are translations people don't bitch about so much, so maybe there is an issue with those translations. I don't know because I've never watched them.
On the other hand, if you really do care so much about the Japanese language and having faithful translations, then yeah maybe you should just learn Japanese. It's what I did, and it's easier than it sounds. A translation is never going to match the source in quality and if you watch a lot of anime, play Japanese games etc while criticizing the localizations then you'd probably increase your enjoyment.

She might be right about some fanboys, especially when it comes to translation, they can be dicks.

I mean, you even quarrel among subs vs dubs when it comes to who did the right translation. Nobody is ever going to be happy about this.

That said, Amanda should have just remain professional and not respond. Twitter is toxic.

I'm surprised that people don't know about the complexities of translation. As a person that speaks more than one language, you can (mis)interpret things easily.

That woman had to endure people online saying that her husband and child getting cancer, was cool for them because of her translation.

If someone deserves to be salty, it's her. I'm fine with her tweets.

Reap...what you sow. It's a cartoon. A cartoon. I had no idea who this lady even was before this thread and she could be a terrible person for all I know. That doesn't matter, the issue isn't her, it's the fact people are harassing someone over a cartoon dub.

A cartoon.

The triviality of the whole thing is mind boggling. Who cares. It's a cartoon, move on. This isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things.

Amanda Winn Lee, a person involved with the original English translation of Neon Genesis Evangelion folks. Yikes.

She seems nice.

I mean if you'd been hounded for that long you wouldn't be a little tender on the subject? Fandoms aren't exactly the most understanding or reasonable people at times.

Shut up wench!

I like fansubbers too, but commercial subbing is just that, it's for profit. Trying to make the material accessible to the widest audience possible is obviously the most logical business choice you can make. I doubt she made that call all on her own, especially considering localization to America has a habit of trying to strip as much Japan from the product as possible, well at least until recently.

I wouldn't call it "just a cartoon" but otherwise I mostly agree. I think it's fair for people to be dissatisfied with something they love being changed or adapted poorly, but at the end of the day the best way to show your displeasure isn't to harass people, but to vote with your dollars.

There are just a few arguments I would make here.
First, it is silly to act like the people who complained about the liberal translation are the same people who are complaining about the literal translation. Different people have different opinions. Also, as far as I am aware she is not involved with the Netflix version so I don't see why she would care.

Second, there is no real reason to believe Americanizing an anime gets you a bigger audience and more profit. As far as I am aware, most anime that is localised is available on DVD/BD only, or services specifically for fans. The only people watching it/purchasing it are people who are already fans. Personally, I feel like companies are already aware of this, which is why there is such a difference between localization today and localization 20 years ago. That being said, if your show is Pokemon and it airs on regular TV on regular times in the west, then there is an argument to be made.

Finally, voting with your wallet is fine, but if they don't know why you didn't purchase the product, then the only thing that will happen is they will assume there is no demand. I think it is important to voice your criticisms to an extent.

Bunch of ungrateful anime dweebs. This show dose not get released to the public in almost 30 years and Netflix comes along and FINALLY distributes people are complaining about the smallest things.

I'm depressed af rn but at least I'm not such a miserable pos that I will complain about a few lines of dialogue that are maybe mistranslated.

Fuck are you smoking? NGE was released on VHS and DVD in the US.

That's like saying Godzilla movies got a full public release in the 90's and early 2000's. Hahah good luck finding one of those DVDs for a reasonable price ( I tried). The only way for people to watch the show my shelf included was to watch an illegal stream online. That was a limited release at best. So yes it is like the first time ever this show has gotten such a wide and easily accessible release to the general public. The right for the actual show was up in arms for so long at least Netflix gave this opportunity to the mass public to view the show without any hassle
