Amanda Winn Lee telling Evangelion fans to "Learn Japanese and translate yourself or eat a dick. Either way STFU" in recent tweet about translation

That's like saying Godzilla movies got a full public release in the 90's and early 2000's. Hahah good luck finding one of those DVDs for a reasonable price ( I tried). The only way for people to watch the show my shelf included was to watch an illegal stream online. That was a limited release at best. So yes it is like the first time ever this show has gotten such a wide and easily accessible release to the general public. The right for the actual show was up in arms for so long at least Netflix gave this opportunity to the mass public to view the show without any hassle
NGE is one of the most popular anime out there. You're acting like it's this rare inaccessible VHS only anime that you have to go to a russian torrent site to get. Nobody should be grateful that they can now STREAM it. Wow a legal stream instead of an "illegal" one. If it gets a BD release in america then we'll talk.

From my understanding she doesn't know japanese either, she only adapted the 3 translations she received into one that she thought worked best.

She can eat a few at once too.

Reap...what you sow. It's a cartoon. A cartoon. I had no idea who this lady even was before this thread and she could be a terrible person for all I know. That doesn't matter, the issue isn't her, it's the fact people are harassing someone over a cartoon dub.

A cartoon.

The triviality of the whole thing is mind boggling. Who cares. It's a cartoon, move on. This isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things.
Her job is to voice cartoons and tell people to eat dicks.

guys allow me to speak in my native tongue for a moment

Watashi no pokemon'anime no anata no kurikaeshi to issho ni nihongo no yoi bunshō o kaite mojidōri ni naru koto o manabi nasai

`please when you are writing your english good and translating my pokemon anime do good literals for me or i will become the upset'

make no mistake; our native tongue is our true fatherland

10/10 pro troll would chuckle again

Have you all noticed that nobody actually bitches at foreing movie translations outside anime? I mean, not as vocally!

Yes, because people who have the attention span and intellectual curiosity to enjoy foreign movies aren't a bunch of basement dwelling dweebs.

The italian adaptation on Netflix was awful, pretty much a copy-paste trnaslation from japanese with some insanely convoluted syntax hat made absolutely no sense whatsoever, because of that EVA fans protested for days, Netflix removed it and posted that they are reworking it, simple as that

Also, we ain't talking about fuckin Sword Art Online, Evangelion changed the anime/manga landscape forever, i ain't putting up with something mediocre since i'm a paying costumer

Anyway, i apprecciate her honesty lol

People who watch foreign films do complain about dumb shit though? Oh and they call films... pictures.

What? I bought it at the store like a normal person back in 2007. It was pretty easy to find. I'm willing to bet you could find the DVDs still today for purchase.

Here in Italy I've been trying to buy all Godzilla release but I've found 2 in a pawn shop. that's it. If I want to see Godzilla the only way I have is with an illegal streaming :(

Complaining about dumb shit and harassing people are different things. Although maybe I was a bit harsh referring to them as 'basement dwelling nerds'.

Oh please for the most part its the same kinda audience.

Kinda I guess. I saw MUBI cover the Evangelion release recently. The writer was pretty enthusiastic about it, which was nice.

Harassing? I'm 100% sure this chick is having a midlife crisis on twitter or insane.

The Angry Left approach. "I'm just gonna be preemptively pissed off about everything so that nobody will ever disagree with me about anything ever."

You're a public figure on Twitter, ma'am. If you don't want people to disagree with your positions— which you seem to enjoy driving home with anger and bile— then get off of social media, or, at the very least, lock down your accounts for followers only.

Being a preemptively angry person only serves to aggravate everyone else around you.

Two tweets in and this woman is emblematic of everything wrong with social media today:

— All about the outrage
— All about the binary "with me or against me"
— Make sure you're mad as hell

Yeah, I'll never get why people do this. Or politicians.

Yeah, I'll never get why people do this. Or politicians.

Seriously. Is this how she talks to people in reality? It practically invites confrontation.

But, then again, that's the path "resisters" walk now. All about the anger, looking to bait someone into an altercation or confrontation, followed by a genuinely surprised reaction when it happens and they get responded to in kind, or worse.

So she gets paid to act/read lines and some people don't like how the script is? And they get pissed at her? I'd say fuck them too.

Twitter is probably the worst social media platform, people always have that knee jerk reaction just because your translation is kinda meeehhhhhh.

There are just a few arguments I would make here.
First, it is silly to act like the people who complained about the liberal translation are the same people who are complaining about the literal translation. Different people have different opinions. Also, as far as I am aware she is not involved with the Netflix version so I don't see why she would care.

Second, there is no real reason to believe Americanizing an anime gets you a bigger audience and more profit. As far as I am aware, most anime that is localised is available on DVD/BD only, or services specifically for fans. The only people watching it/purchasing it are people who are already fans. Personally, I feel like companies are already aware of this, which is why there is such a difference between localization today and localization 20 years ago. That being said, if your show is Pokemon and it airs on regular TV on regular times in the west, then there is an argument to be made.

Finally, voting with your wallet is fine, but if they don't know why you didn't purchase the product, then the only thing that will happen is they will assume there is no demand. I think it is important to voice your criticisms to an extent.

I don't know where this first bit came from? I never mentioned anything about Netflix. I didn't even know the Netflix subs were any different than the OG ones?

I mean whether there's a reason or not it's what American companies do... just look at the Ace Attorney series. You're not wrong that the people purchasing Eva are generally people who were already fans (though I hadn't seen it before I bought the first DVD when I was 13 or something), but why wouldn't they want to try and sell to a somewhat larger audience? I mean at this point they've basically given up, but at the time that Eva first came over there were still plenty of anime or anime-like cartoons airing on Saturday mornings.

Lastly, I didn't say you had to shut up and deal with it or something. It's fine to direct your displeasure at the correct people. I don't really think she's the appropriate target, and even if you don't agree, certainly she's undeserving of harassment, no? Fandoms need to learn what is an appropriate reaction and what isn't, and who they should, or should not, aim their criticism at.

She is right. Also, translation is FUCKING hard and sometimes pretty much impossible to convey 100% of the original meaning.

This is kinda why I can't get into anime

The writing (English) is so poor and uniteresting that everything is said completely literal and nobody has any personality or character or nuance in how they speak.

And then people like this, who take liberties so that the writing is somewhat bearable and not like reading Google Translate, and then people bitch about it!

It's not like these characters are completely switcherood (though in some cases yes) - but anime translation budgets and efforts are so poor that people are used to terrible Google translate animes full of

P-please try your best

I-I will always be here for you.

I will become the strongest and then beat him.

H-huh? H-how could you think that oñee-chan?

I mean if you really think those four sentences encompass anime then you have a very stilted view of anime.

Imagining that tweet in Rei's voice is hilarious.

I wonder how many times she's been approached by these fanboys with that request? It probably isn't zero.
