Better off just manually updating it. I haven't been able to figure out what conditions need to be met for it to download it on it's own.
I shouldn't look for more than just the Paperwhite right? I want to start reading more and I want to get a Kindle. What about special offers or no?
The next one is oasis I think which has auto adjust brightness but really, how annoying is it to adjust that on the Paperwhite?

If you don't already own a kindle, start with Paperwhite. Most people are fulfilled by its features and it has arguably the best value too. Changing brightness is just a few easy taps and doesn't need to be done more than once at the beginning or maybe twice in an entire reading session.
If you're tight on cash the Paperwhite is great, but maaaaaan do I love PagePress on the Voyage.
The special offers are fine. You can always pay to get rid of them in the future if they bother you.
Don't even need to do that, just contact Amazon Customer Support chat and they'll remove them.

When I did it I told them that the ads weren't relevant to me and I was tired of swiping them away. They removed them for me after that. I did wait a little while before I asked them though.

Thinking about getting a current gen paperwhite 3g. I was hoping to find a refurb but have been unable.

Is there any sort of guess on when the new high end model will be out? Thinking about finally actually replacing my lost voyage with an Oasis, especially as I've had to downsize space and subsequently have no room for an actual library, but I wouldn't want another super expense deluxe model that's better to come out any time soon.

I wouldn't expect anything until Fall. There is a new processor for eink that requires a software revision so Amazon is going to have to take more time to get a new kindle ready.
Wow, you rock. I went into chat with them and said I keep getting ads for genres I have zero interest in (which is 100% true) and it was annoying to have to swipe every time I lift the Origami cover. Dude asked for my serial number and removed them without me even having to ask.

I think I'll just wait on whatever they release this year. My Kindle fire will have to do for now. Looking at the current offerings, the Oasis looks great, really like the one handed design. The Voyage looks good but that plus the cover is almost the same size.

haha! Excellent! I'm glad they hooked you up! Their customer service is amazing.
I had the same experience. I had actually bought the Voyage in the U.S. (before it was available in Canada) and I bought the ads one cause it was cheaper. Once I got back to Canada I called Amazon and said I'm in Canada and the ads don't apply to me, they removed it right away, no charge.

Just got my Oasis and it's kind of amazing how light this thing is.
Pics or it didn't happen! I want to buy one but can't justify the cost since I already have the Voyage and leather case.

Is Kindle unlimited worth the money?
It's worth the 30 day free trial to see if there are enough books to hold your interest there at $10 per month.

I don't think so. The selection seems very lacking outside of a handful on genres.
If you're willing to read books that aren't blockbusters or from huge authors, I think it is. I downloaded $15 bucks worth of books the day I signed up for the trial.

I'd say go for it! Looks like the Glo HD with sleep cover is going for around $95-$110 on eBay.
Do it. Kindle Voyage doesn't have physical buttons (it's more like the iPhone 7's home button) but the flushed screen is awesome. No more crumbs and dust.

I am extremely worried going by the reviews. Tons of people complaining about yellow lighting/uneven lighting. Very visible examples of lighting that is different compared from the top of the screen to the bottom
Seems like it was terribly widespread and I fear the refurbished models suffer from it
Any advice please? I am returning it and getting a refund if this proves to be the case
I simply expect flawlessness for such a device, especially since my kobo has been pretty good.

All ereaders have some unevenness when backlit but it's not usually too noticeable
Color unevenness when the backlight is on seems like it should be mild, though unlikely to be perfectly absent
I have a launch Voyage and the screen looks fine. Backlighting is warmer than my Kobo Aura HD which suits my eyes better than pure-white.
EDIT: This is what it looks like at 50% brightness. Very even backlighting and tone.
EDIT 2: LOL sorry, ignore the text on the screen. I was doing some proofreading last night.

Thanks. I expect some unevenness but some reviews have had incredibly jarring screens that I couldn't believe were considered passable

Hope I can do this considering Im in US but live in Canada lol
Paid $215 for a refurb. $300 + tax new otherwise.
Canada has no option for refurbs and they run out of voyag and oasis often.

I got the Origami and really regret it. The thing is so heavy with the cover on. I prefer to hold the thing without any cover. Makes it so much easier and lighter to hold. If I were to have done it all over again I'd get a sleeve so that its protected in a bag and call it good.

I use the omoton case for the voyage and love it. I find the Voyage too hard to hold without a case.

I have a Fintie case and it's amazing for the price but it is still sort of plastic cheap feeling and does mess up the form factor, yet it is definitely better than a full blown book
I kind of like the idea of using a sleeve for the kindles. The case options for tablets and dreamers really fuck up the feel and form factor and make them bulky because the cases are big and have a big hinge to cover the screen.

I have the Origami and absolutely love it. Gives a good boost to the weight so it feels good in my hand, the thickness makes it perfect and I love how rock solid the magnets are!

I want a cover cover to help it feel like a book and add some grip.
I disnt realize it was so durable, I guess I fear it breaking quite easily if I dropped it since I hear a lot of random complaints about the hardware and software being so buggy
Im going to go with Fintie. It leaves the voyage exposed on the top and bottom but I guess Ill live with that.

I had the smart shell case by Fintie for my Voyage, I felt it was a bit too flimsy. I mean it's thin as hell, but doesn't provide much in the way of protection. I switched to the Swees case instead. It's a big thicker, but feels like it offers a bit more protection for my Kindle. YMMV.

Got my Voyage. Definitely a gradient with the top and bottom half but Im unsure if its bad enough to return. DOnt want something worse after all.

Two things:
Some gradient is normal to my knowledge so go look at pictures in the Amazon reviews to judge a bit.
Also, updating on kindle seems to be shitty. They only will download updates while plugged in and even though many people including myself never get the update. So You should just follow the instructions on Amazon for how to manually update the software by plugging into your computer.
I never do the wifi update. I always download the correct firmware from the Amazon page and then update manually.
