So I am watching Vanilla Sky on AMC, mind you, a CABLE channel. Showing ostensibly an arthouse flick. Its only actual worth is a long, lingering look at Penelope Cruz's marvelous Catalan Cantaloupes. Only they are blurred out so badly that it looks like I am watching Kurt Russell stumble into the snowstorm in The Thing.

So in righteous indignation I flip the channel to the Travel Channel which then proceeds to display a long ominous parental warning about potentially offensive, dangerous, provocative content... about ANTHONY BOURDAIN.

Are we such stupid babies? Seriously?

If it was the Quebec episode, the warning is warranted. *shiver*

And yet in Australia, anything after 8:30pm on network television is basically fair game. Californication, for example, is shown on network television at 9:30pm, uncensored. So are other HBO shows, like The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex and the City, etc.

Funny how that works, since our video game laws are much more strict.

Well, I can see how some of the stuff he eats in foreign places or how it's prepared would offend some people. PETA especially!

I blame the misinterpretation of religious texts, weak minded fools who blindly accept the world around them, and human beings' infatuation with being on "teams" which produces such self-righteousness.

That statement applies to both religious, non-religious, and anti-religious types, fyi.

Pfft. I didn't even have E! on TV as a kid. If I did I would have never left my room. My wacking material was the bra section in the JC Penny catalogue, the SI Swimsuit Edition from the 70's and 80's in my dad's attic, and Inside Edition featuring Bill Oreiley. If there is one thing America has taught me is boobs are evil hell spawn.

takes about 5 seconds to find a nude picture of Penelope Cruz on Google. I just saved you two hours

I don't want nudity. I want to be treated like an adult. An adult who is sometimes partial to nudity.

The original (abre los ojos) is better

It's the same fucking movie. The only difference is the main character seems to be only very rich not mega tycoon with a apartment on Central Park the size of a library rich.

Please, tell me what makes Obre Los Ojos better.

It was not a shot for shot remake of another movie?

Yeah I don't really get why cable channels are so conservative about content. IMO they aren't taking advantage of the one major thing they have over broadcast networks.

IFC and Sundance are pretty much the only non premium channels that air movies uncut. FX and Comedy Central push the content a little sometimes, but not nearly as much as HBO does, and not in prime time as much.

Also Penelope Cruz is from Madrid so she would be castilian, not catalan. Castilian cantaloupes doesn't have quite the same ring though. :lol :lol

Come to Australia, we have uncensored television free to air... the rest, not so much, but our TV hey, it's the best! :D
You censor the fuck out of the net though :(

I would say... Canada is almost the most perfect country for censorship! The only thing we ever banned was Power Rangers... and we did that by voluntary free-market telephone vote on one of our kids stations.. and it mattered for about five minutes in 1994 or whatev. Then we brought in a US Fox feed with the show anyway :lol Canadians: correct me if I'm wrong... I don't remember ever being denied a thing.

I've even seen a lot of nudity, swearing, violence, etc on networks and over the air channels.

Well, they did ban Beavis and Butthead for a while... but that was only because animated shows didn't fall under MuchMusic's television licence, and the CRTC decided to have a fit.

So ya, we get just about everything... eventually.

Does anyone actually sit down and watch movies being shown on basic cable?

I am compelled to watch Bloodsport on basic cable every time it's on, but that's about it.

FIGHT TO SURVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE.
KUMITE. KUMITE. KUMITE.

Don't watch movies on TV. They always cut out the best parts, never show them in widescreen, and replace casual cussing with the most ridiculous shit imaginable.

I saw it, and it was good, but I'm not sure if it's better... will re-watch.

I thought Cameron Diaz was the better crazy love interest, but I liked that Cruz in the original was less sympathetic after the incident.

I see violence edited a lot too - like the Patriot and Gangs of New York. What shows have you seen that they showed that stuff?

The funny thing is that showing someone get shot in the head on camera used to be verboten. In fact, the showrunner of Sliders used it as a test to see if the network (Sci-fi?) gave a fuck anymore, but purposely putting a guy getting his brains blown out into a script to see if the censors or network would object. When they didn't, he blew the season's budget on a random episode and checked out.

Nowadays? I've seen it in at least 4 network shows.

This thread needs a better thread title. I've come into this thread three times in three days and only now do I understand what is going on. Maybe I should have re-read the OP.

Everything is very much edited on TV unless it's on premium cable. If you watch pretty much any R rated movie on basic cable it's going to be neutered and you'll miss quite a bit. The battle scenes in Braveheart are much, much shorter, I'll say that. Office Space isn't nearly as funny either with the Comedy Central version.

I know in Mexico its fair game after 7, I don't know if the rules changed since 2008, I remember watching the season 1 of Secret Diary of Call Girl at 7:30
