Where does your nickname come from?

Mine takes forever to explain.

My real name's Dan. When I was a little kid, my best friend's dad always called me Dan Druff. When I started using the internet in 1994, I always used Dan Druff when I had to register an account. Over time it became more and more common for Dan Druff to already be registered by someone else, and I didn't want to just tack extra numbers at the end, so I started using other names. I was all hyped up about Star Wars Episode 1 coming out in about a year, and I saw the first leaked photo of Ewan McGregor as a young Obi Wan, and that blew my mind so I started going by Obi Druff. Then the first photo of Darth Maul landed, and that blew my mind even more, and I switched to Druff Maul. A lot of sites wouldn't allow spaces, so Druffmaul. That's the name I used at NeoGAF for years, but, uh... something happened to that account. So I opened a new one as Muffdraul.

Mine was a randomly generated user name that got assigned by an old company I worked for 20 years ago. This was prior to password vaults, and the company had IT policies that made me type my credentials in a dozen times a day or more, auto-logged me out of apps after inactivity, etc. It was the worst approach to security.

When I went to sign up for an old forum, I just used the same credentials because it was muscle memory at that time.

Also, I wasn't cleaver enough to think of a funny user name that could fit in a 12 character limit.

IDKFA

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
I wanted something Doom related. IDDQD was taken, so I thought "fuck it" IDKFA it is.........................

Then I remembered that means "I don't know fuck all" and instantly regrated it.

I'm now stuck with this wank username, but if I spent time to think about it I could have had something cool like "The Great Shlong" or something like that.

About 10 years ago I was working for a data analytics company called Feedback Ferret. Hence my user name.

Then I was made redundant from there (found a new job within a week or so), few years later the whole company went under, I guess the pandemic and the rise of AI (their system was definitely not AI based!) finished them off.

In one of my favorite movies, Donnie Darko, the teacher Karen Pomeroy (played by Drew Barrymore) said:

"This famous linguist once said that of all the phrases in the English language, of all the endless combinations of words in all of history, that "cellar door" is the most beautiful."

It's my favorite scene and I always get goosebumps! Don't know why but it touches me somehow... 🤷🏻‍♂️☺️

My freshman year GF called me Alex instead of my real name and I hated it so much I decided to use it for GAF after we broke up.

Alexanderson

And I like how Anderson goes with Alex. Overlap as in alexander anderson. There's probably a term for this I don't know!

Someone who I dare not name but may have board-wide superpowers including the ability to most callously rename his finest posters didn't enjoy an instance of me using the ol'
yGuhHwK.png

Said rename being a swap of a certain winged horse with a proper name and a proper mane, but really the whole thing is a Battlestar reference to this fine rotund gentleman:
captain-apollo-battlestar-galactica.gif

And not this broad:
michelle-forbes-battlestar-galactica.gif

Thank you for letting me speak my truth.

I can't remember.

I remember I was using a couple other names on-line (back in the 90s) and then I started to use this one and pretty much have been using it since.

Though, Blue is one of my favorite colours and I am a bad boy.

Had to make a name in Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast. Character looked devious so I thought DeVeAn. Turns out its a legit name already I had no idea at the time.
I needed a character name for my first char on PSO Ver.1. My brothers were playing one of the Baldur's Gate game so I was well versed in hearing Minsc speak. Thought his lines were cool so I used his name and very loosely styled my HUmar off him. Never did play Baldur's Gate for more than three to four hours.

Within a year or two I switched my online handle to Minsc, or a variant of if taken. The short, my handle is a reference to my first PSO character.

Everyone used to call my Chrisypoo growing up. Over time, that just slowly turned to most people calling me Poo, and then from there some folks started calling me Poodaddy when my daughter was born, and it just kinda stuck I guess.

When you take too many shrooms and begin to think you are actually that character from Dream of the Red Chamber…

or something to do with that film with a levitating island by that anime film director who hates AI.

Nothing super fun. I liked the devilman character from world industries.
I had a habbo hotel account which was devilman666 (pretty cool, right). I made an alt called Rockondevil and I just stuck with it on everything.
I was trying to think of something new, fun and original but so many things are taken these days.

It's my nickname at work. I'm a night shift security guy at a nuclear weapon storage facility, so all the other employees call me nocturnal, or nocty for short.

When I hear my nickname, I immediately know that I just ran into someone that I haven't seen since high school. Through a combination of my last name being on the harder side to pronounce, and the fact that I was known as on of the fastest runners in the district (American football, track, and baseball), somehow everyone started calling me "gasoline" or "gas". This replaced a much less endearing nickname "Gonzo".

EDIT: LOL, that's what I get for not reading OP. I don't remember where I got my GAF username from specifically. I do find it important to attempt to be "reasonable", and I am mostly a human "being".

I used to play games with my cousin when we were young, and when deciding the characters names we thought of fusing our own names (Helder + "Guga", my nickname)

Rest is history

Today I'm 32 and he is 36, and we still use this nickname in all of our games.

We've had this thread before......
Anyway..username used to be The Great One. But people would shorten it to TGO when mentioning me so I went with it.
Been under that name now for 20+ years.
