An American-made game hasn't won GOTY since 2020...

I'm trying, but it feels like someone suddenly found a year's supply of Viagra in their basement, looked at it and said, "No, I wouldn't let it go to waste." :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Thankfully my plumbing doesn't need priming of that sort (yet) but I have to think that in that scenario you might never see ole Topher again.

Just think about American can't get the best player on a American invented sport makes me chuckles

Team USA mens basketball has a 143-6 record in the Olympics

Grats on your single player taking home an MVP though

Equating game with a specific country is an extremely stupid decision. Unless, of course, it's an indie game or a game made by a small group of developers. Hundreds of people work on games, and they all have different nationalities. Large games don't have flags or countries. They are the combined work of a huge number of talented people from different countries.

Seriously, I would rather not be the smartest person in the room or the hardest worker, lol. France is doing better than us making awesome videogames!? GOOD! I hope Spain does too, and Belgium and Guam and everyone on this Earth. If you tell me some human has improved one of my favorite things, then yeah, I'm excited not jealous. This is probably what all Americans want, lol. Yall must think we are real shits, lol.

That it is a big world and competition is good.

US born and bred, but I really don't care where a game is made as long as it is good.
Got to admit though Europe has been doing amazingly well recently.

BG3, Owlcat's WotR and Rogue Trader, various Paradox strategy games, E33, KCD2 and so on.

Eurobros are pumping out gem after gem!

They're too busy fixing games anyhow. All sports are compromised more than ever now.

I started going on an angry tangent about enshitification of sports and especially gambling and stopped in time. 😅

Funny how KC (NFL) can't win shit to save their life after the most obvious year last year. NFL got their Swift fill for 3 years until the spotlight got too bright on specific called games.

Which has been going on forever
It's gotten a lot worse lately, especially since sports gambling (and gambling in general) basically got a green light thanks to Supreme Court.

Gambling is everywhere now. I don't think it's a great idea. Also, College Ball is air more problematic and less interesting due to payment structure with gambling being the cherry on top.

But enough of my rants! Let's discuss why E33 didn't deserve GotY! 😉

I think in my sport one of the earliest fixing scandals was the 1919 Chicago Black Sox fixing the World Series for the Mafia

Seeing ads plastered all over stadiums, specific camera shots to capture them, commercials with athletes in them... it's all things that would have been blasphemy in your day.

Just doesn't sit right with me.

And of course athletes themselves are directly advertising gambling sites now.

The Keighley's are pure trash as a metric so I look at BAFTA instead. The unusual thing is that in the 2010s the USA really dominated game of the year awards unlike the 2000s. Now you can say there is a reversion to the mean. It is really weird for every year a game made in California to win like clockwork, for a global industry, but that is what was happening. But California is suffering from success due to the high cost of living and lack of financial incentives to support developing industries. Before the 2010s the UK was winning way more game of the year awards but the industry there has been totally gutted by developers leaving for places with better salaries, which are often places where the government is really trying to grow the industry with financial support. I think that California is better run and wealthier than the UK so I can't see the industry in California being left to rot by corrupt and stupid government the same way it was in the UK.

Honestly the main reason is because of American wages.

Americans cost too much, so the games they do make have enormous budgets, which mean the stuff coming out of American studios is going to be lower-risk, less surprising, and less innovative, both in design and narrative.

These companies could save a ton of money getting out of the west coast, especially the over inflated CA.

I mean, this was the nominee list.

I would've given it to Hades or Ghost or FF7 tbh lol. Ghost was my personal GOTY that year so I'm a LITTLE biased. I don't even hate LOU2, and think it earned all the technical awards it got, but the creative side of it (writing, characters, and story mostly) we fucking abysmal and should've held it back from the big award.

But that's just one tard's opinion, of course.

You realize we're only like 4.5% of the world's population right? Games are being made everywhere these days. It isn't the 90s anymore.
