The Game:
Max Anarchy is an online multiplayer brawler. Given that it's effectively the spiritual sequel to 2009's MadWorld, what you'll come to find in Max Anarchy is general character movement and environmental hazards that are extremely reminiscent to it's predecessor. Max Anarchy, however, places less emphasis on environmental kills and puts more control in the player's hands by offering things like limited use super moves, 360 degree unblockables and more complex combo strings that add up to a much more rounded out fighting system than what was in MadWorld. Which isn't to say that there aren't still plenty of barrels, tires and street signs to throw at opponents or lodge into their heads(as well as new weapons to make quick work of opponents). But what the game loses by reeling in the game show “kill with style” theme, it gains by offering players a more robust and frankly, more fun, fighting system. The game also has larger environmental hazards(such as bombing runs or large amounts of poison being released) in specific areas of maps that add an urgency for players to move around the environment.

(Make no mistake, though. At the end of the day, we all lose by not getting more DiMaggio and Proops commentary.)

Oh, and there's a single player. It unlocks characters for use in multiplayer.

(But you probably don't want to buy it for only the single player.)

I'd be sad now if it weren't for the release situation reminding me of it already (online focused Japanese game, budget priced, nearly skipped over entirely). Though I guess MadWorld already took the "interesting story" angle, leaving Anarchy Reigns with the rest.

Although at least Phantom Dust sort of has one of the best "tutorials" of all time. Just as well, given that's what the entire single player boils down to.

For people who imported, how deep is the single player, and is it beat-em-'up or a one-on-one or a mixture of both?

The single player is pretty standard action game length (7 to 10 hours? I really don't know), has interesting enough cutscenes, and fairly varied missions (with 1v1 duels included as well as a surprising number of unique objectives).

I had a lot of fun with the single player on Hard.
