Well, it's not like the ps2 logo was much better.
It's very basic though, anyone could come up with something like this.
But i wouldn't mind something more elaborated along these lines

I'd be very surprised if PS3 logo is any different than PS2 and PSP logo. They'd abandon that design with PSP if they wanted, but they didn't (and rightfully so, as it's a pretty sharp design)

It looks like it could be from a trademark filing.

If you didn't know it read "PS3" you'd have a hard time figuring it out.

Maybe there's symbolism involved though..

Guess it's not worth talking about its merits or lack thereof before we know it's for real though..

Never confirmed, and though possible, I find it unlikely.

The US Trademark office still just has this logo:

Although the one in the original post could have come from a japanese trademark filing or the like.

Or else it's just fake
