Android Gaming Thread: News & Recommendations

I picked up all the Rockstar games and refunded one--Chinatown Wars. I found the walking and driving controls imprecise.

The rest play great though. Probably also helps that i haven't played any of them before when they came out on PC or console so there's no readjustment to contend with. Or maybe 3rd person camera games are just easier to control with touch compared to 2d overhead.

I've been getting back into Shiro Neko cause of some friends...what ever happened to Rune Story? Did they finally patch in counters? Is it worth getting back into that as well?

Most of the Dragon Quest games are on sale for 30%-40% off:
Dragon Quest II - $2.99 (Regular $4.99)
Dragon Quest III - $6.99 (Regular $9.99)
Dragon Quest V - $9.99 (Regular $14.99)
Dragon Quest VI - $9.99 (Regular $14.99)

EDIT: Hmm, the Similar sidebar shows that the entire series is on sale in Japan, so maybe I, IV, and VIII will be part of the sale later.

For someone who hasn't played any of them, is there a recommended favorite? I'd guess VI or VIII are the ones I remember hearing the most about but I don't know how good they are on mobile.

You can't go wrong with the Zenithia Trilogy (IV, V, VI). They're all pretty faithful ports of the DS remakes, and IV even re-adds the party chat feature that was cut out of the DS localization. My personal favorite is V, since it has the best plot in the series, and a flexible party system based around recruiting monsters. My second-favorite is IV, due to the unique "Chapters" structure, where you play as each of the party members individually before bringing them all together. I don't have much experience with VI, but it seems well-liked, though not regarded as highly as the other two.

As for the others: I and II are classics, but they can feel a bit simple/archaic compared to the rest (and the graphics scaling isn't as good as future entries, so they can look quite ugly on larger devices); III is another one that's regularly cited by fans as a favorite due to the Job System, but it sounds like SE never updated it to work on LolliPop/Marshmallow. VIII was a bit infamous at launch for struggling to run smoothly even on flagship devices, despite sporting a graphical downgrade from the PS2 version. It also lacks the PS2 localization's orchestral soundtrack and voice acting. I'm not too sure about how it fares nowadays, but if possible, you're better off waiting for the 3DS remake if you want VIII, since it adds a bunch of new content, and still includes voice acting, along with a remastered orchestral soundtrack.

tl;dr Out of the DQs that are currently on sale, V is the best one.

I would love to play more Square Enix mobile games, but my experience with Chrono Trigger was sub par, so i swore to myself not to buy again from them.

Really annoyed that DQIII doesn't seem to have been sorted out for lolipop. I played through DQ1 & 2 on my phone and thought they suited mobile perfectly.

I'm completely new to Android gaming (I recently got a Nexus 5X) and I wouldn't mind picking a game up for it. That being said, I have absolutely no idea where to begin, because the Google Play store is absolutely crammed with stuff.
I have Sonic 2 on it because it was free on Amazon a few years back, but that's all. I'm enjoying it, but I wouldn't mind trying something else. I have like £4 credit on my phone (I can use that to buy stuff from the app store, right?), and I'm looking for a more traditional game to play; like the Sonic games for example. There's Sonic 1 and Crazy Taxi, which both seem like good choices for me, but I'm wondering if there's any super cool stuff that I'm just not looking in the right place for. I just want something that's more Sonic 2 than Angry Birds or PvZ basically.

App-sales.net is listing Out There: Omega Edition as on sale for $0.10 as a weekly special, but when I checked it was still full price.

Did I miss it, or is app-sales just wrong?

I think it was regional. I see it (and have for the past week) at full price too here in the USofA, but others online in other countries have said they got it for cheaper.

EDIT - Oooh, stuff - "What's inside the Box by Bart Bonte" is fantastic - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.com.bartbonte.thebox&hl=en

Joe Danger, Rayman Jungle Run, and Rayman Fiesta Run are really solid platformers.

Theyre all "auto run" games, but theyre level based instead of "infinite runner" games and they play extremely well compared to their console game counterparts.

Am currently playing it.

For a light tactics game, it's actually pretty decent. It has quite a bit of hidden depth with all the status effects. The autoplay for grinding easier battles is a very nice addition.

I would however add a few suggestions, namely more use of the back button. Right now it doesn't do anything. Oh, and the music occasionally overlaps during some battles.

Oh, and don't taunt the casino owner. She might get really angry. :D

Thanks, man! We're currently trying hard to make it available for iOS (this month hopefully), but once that is out we can revisit some of these suggestions.

Lol, yeah, an easter egg our artist was desperate to fit in. Considering it isn't mentioned anywhere shame on you for finding it! ;b

Oooh, this looks really interesting, and this dev did great with the Battleheart games. I'm noticing there are $0.99 in app purchases being listed - any idea what those IAPs are for?

No clue sorry. I haven't purchased the game yet. I'm guessing it's not pay to win.

Any mining games recommendations? I was a huge fan of Miner Dig Deep on XNA and Minecraft is great but I rather not play that pocket edition.

Gamasutra.
Finally finished Highrise Word Heroes, which I got from a Humble Bundle.

Not bad for killing time. Has a story with a twist at the end. Did not see it coming...

It's like Bookworm, but with a few twists.

Any update on Iron Marines (from Ironhide Studios)? I remember someone from the team had actually posted in here that it might be out in April but the website (the last time I looked) suggested more of a summer release.

So I've returned to Android gaming because I bought an Android TV recently and I found out that most of my phone's games are compatible with the TV! :)

Can anyone tell me if the Google Play Games app syncs your saves across devices? Thanks.
