Shouldn't be a problem for me Chojin. That is odd though.

I stand by my statement. After having used WM6.5 on my Vox and Kaiser, I can say that it's still fugly.

Wait is 6.5 out yet?

Midas said:
Okay. So no HTC Hero for me. What should I get while waiting for Rachael...

Possibly the T-Mobile "win" phone Chojin has been hinting at, which should have a hard keyboard.

Engadget have put up their review of the Hero: http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/htc-hero-review/

What's interesting is that if you watch the video that goes along with their comments about the device being unresponsive, it seems pretty fast.

I'm not sure that it's worth abandoning all hope for the Hero yet. It's possible that:

A) The phone's specs may be improved when it comes to the US (as happened with the Touch Pro on some carriers)
B) The speed issues may be resolved by using a custom ROM from XDA/PPCGeeks (as happened with the Touch Pro & Diamond)

The calendar and web videos were very slow. The web video was over wifi...and the calender is a calender.

Sprint CEO: We're glad we waited on Android

CNET News said:
Sprint CEO Dan Hesse has a lot to say about the mobile operating system he held off on--Android--and not so much about the phone he has backed, Palm's Pre.

[...] As for Android, Hesse said his company is a big supporter of the operating system, but is glad the company waited until the second version of the Google-backed operating system.

"The reviews say now it's ready for prime time," Hesse said. "It wasn't when it first came out."

Hesse said Sprint will have at least one Android-based device for sale this year.

So their upcoming phone will be Android 2.0? Interesting.

Android Hub And Household Gadgets Coming This Year

Phandroid said:
The home control devices are designed to talk to major household systems, such as lights, locks, security and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC).

The media devices play a similar unifying role in the entertainment realm, allowing users to program their digital video recorders (DVRs), remotely control their stereo systems, and view TV listings directly on the gadget’s screen.

Touch Revolution is calling the third category of products, “smart phones for the home.” These cordless phones, meant for indoors use only, will communicate via radio waves like typical home phones or through voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) on wi-fi.

The included video is really neat. Android seems to be creeping up everywhere...

Since it applies to all Android hardware, except for possibly the HTC Hero, I'll post most firmware-related updates here until the official thread is made.

Damn...for all the hype about the Hero having flash, that was abysmal and useless.

The UI looks great, but it needs more power.

After seeing that, I'd rather go with a Magic than a Hero. Standard Android may not be as flashy but atleast it doesn't chug around in the browser and calender like the Hero. What's the point of flash when videos play less than 1 frame per second?

Some people who have the Hero have mentioned that you can disable the Sense UI and go to the standard Android interface without HTC-exclusive widgets. If you do this, it runs at the same speed as the non-memory-crippled version of the Magic/G1. You can also disable flash in the browser.

So compared to the Magic, the Hero is probably the better device, since you have the choice between the standard interface and prettier but slower one, you get an improved keyboard, multi-touch browser, higher build quality, and (subjectively) a nicer looking device. The only real downside is that you probably will have to wait a bit to get OS updates since it's not Google branded.

1. (Subjectively) there's no way I could believe if someone said they liked how the Hero looks more than the Magic. The Magic is too beautiful. <3 And it's not asymmetrical.

2. Source? Seems odd since Sense appears very rooted to the device, though if it is just merely a skin atop Android, that would explain the sluggishness...

3. I too have the feeling it will take longer for official updates to Android to make their way to non-Google branded phones, to me the feeling I get is that speedy updates is one of the clauses manufacturers/carriers agree to for a Google experience phone. But I suppose that's hearsay until I can peg an exact source...

1. Personally I like the looks of the Hero. It's retro-chic. The teflon white version at least. Reminds me of Kubrick's aesthetic in 2001.

2. Source was a commenter on SlashGear's Hero review:

By the way, you can change the homescreen to the classic android one (with the 3 pages, but without HTC widgets :( ), and it gets really smooth then.

http://www.slashgear.com/htc-hero-review-2149880/

3. On the other hand, HTC has added feature to Android in addition to the UI, such as a better keyboard and multi-touch in the browser. So you may be able to get some features faster using the non-Google branded ROMs. Moreover, if you go to a site like PPCGeeks or XDA-Dev, you can get many unofficial ROMs with WinMo 6.5 already, even though it hasn't been released on devices. I wouldn't be surprised if people start releasing unofficial ROMs that incorporate features from the Android trunk before the OTA updates come.

HTC recently stated at a press event that Sense was designed in such a way that it was just an overlay on the OS and they wanted to be sure that it wouldn't require much engineering to incorporate changes in Android. Hopefully it is somewhat close to the Linux model; what I mean is that when I run Ubuntu or SuSe or Redhat, I can still get the same kernel updates in spite of the different UI.

Has there been any hard information on the i7500/Galaxy coming to T-Mo this year? If it doesn't I'm abandoning T-Mo for Sprint just for the Pre. That Sammy phone is my last resort... :\

Man, I really want a smart phone. But goddamnit, it's expensive. And I don't want to leave Verizon. Which makes it even more expensive.

Teflon white is definitely the way to go, but when I see its side or back... it's not... "congruent" enough? Some things just seem off. The front is pretty good looking though.

Interesting, though HTC should just make their widgets downloadable on the Market.

Not a ton of details to be found here, but the first shots of what certainly appears to be Philips' first Android handset have emerged from China. The V808, as it's called, certainly looks Androidy enough, with a 3.2-inch, HVGA display, and it will supposedly boast a 3.2 megapixel camera and video recording. In Philips fashion, we can probably expect to see it Xenium branded, but as yet, we have no other details on specs, pricing, or availability, and sadly the phone isn't powered on in any of the photos.

Official Facebook App Right Around the Corner

AndroidGuys said:
We’ve seen some excellent Facebook titles for Android so far in apps like Bloo and Babbler so it will be interesting to see what happens once the real deal arrives. Will people continue to pay for these if and when a free one comes from the company itself? They might if TechCrunch’s tipster is right. They claim the app is missing the inbox and other features that are in the iPhone version. However, the app uses Facebook’s new Stream API, which is essentially all one needs.

Reportedly, Facebook still doesn’t even have their own in-house Android developer, let alone team. Google was kind enough to offer up one of their own from the Android team. Look for more big name apps like these to start showing up now that Android is become more viable by the day.

Wow if true FU Facebook. It's nice an "official" app is coming but not having anyone in-house do it is really a dick move.

No new netbooks from Asustek, Acer in 2H09; Acer pushes back Android netbook

DigiTimes said:
Although Acer had originally announced plans to launch a dual-OS netbook with both Windows XP and Android in August, further evaluation has found demand for an Android netbook is not strong enough, and it has therefore decided to postpone the launch of the model.

So sad. :/ Though with Chrome OS coming up Google did this to themselves.

Introducing Creative’s Zii EGG

AndroidGuys said:
According to DAP Review, the Zii Egg is the developer version, designed for OEM/ODM manufacturers but a “Zii” is also mentioned in a document leak for consumers. Even without a radio or 3G support, we’d be half-tempted to pick one up for the right price.

If you’re game, you can grab one for $399 at Zii.com now.

zii_egg.jpg

The specs are flat-out amazing for only $400:
 • Capacitive 10-point multi-gesture touch display
 • 3.5” 320×480 true-color display
 • Up to 32GB internal plus full size SDHC slot (supports up to 32GB of external SDHC Card)
 • Supports: MP3, WMA, AAC, WMV, H.264, MPEG-4, AVI, and MOV (Not confirmed)
 • X-Fi audio processing
 • OpenGL ES 3D graphics
 • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
 • Accelerometer
 • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
 • GPS receiver
 • Light sensor
 • 32MB NOR (Linux Kernel Boot ROM)
 • 256MB Mobile DDR RAM
 • 720p/1080p HDTV output via cable
 • Headphone socket, built-in speaker and microphone
 • Dual cameras (HD camera on back, VGA camera on front)
 • 1200mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery
 • 115 x 62 x 12 mm (108grams)

I may get this instead of the MyTouch now. I really do dislike cell phone contracts, almost never text or call anyone, and there is no 3G in my area. Plus as I said, the specs are amazing for $400: HD recording and playback, 32 GB internal memory, 3.5" multitouch display, and headphone jack in addition to what we expect from Android phones like WiFi, GPS, and the accelerometer. Between the ADP1 and this it's clear which is the winner. Hell this even puts the Zune "HD" to shame.

It looks good on paper. Is there maybe any YT video of this one? I want to see it in action.

It's all a little bit confusing. What exactly is Android supposed to be? I thought it was a cell phone operating system but it is apparently going to be used in PMPs and Netbook computers?

Is the Android on cell phones the same as the Android in PMPs and if so are Android cell phone Apps 100% cross compatible with Android PMPs? With all the different hardware configurations that will be coming out it doesn't sound like they would be but I'd love to be wrong about this, otherwise what is the point?

Factor in Chrome OS into the mix and it appears that Google doesn't have a clear vision for Android.

The original purpose was for always for it to be a kind of universal device OS.

The one's that use phone features won't be compatible, no. But almost no Android apps utilize the telephony stack in any meaningful way anyways. Think of it like almost all apps work across both iPhone and iPod Touch, except for only a couple.

Google does seem to be downplaying Android on netbooks but it's still possible. Some of the first proposed uses for Android was set-top boxes.

And besides, the more devices that run Android, the larger its install base; not all of these will be 100% cross-compatible (there will be some devices without GPS or an accelerometer, for example), however for most developers the massive amount of Android devices will be very attractive as a development platform.

As of about two months ago, it includes precisely zero messages. People who got G1s before then are grandfathered into 400 included messages.

20 cents each, I believe (so 40 cents for an exchange). I was paying a la carte until this month - it's liberating to be able to text "freely" :lol

The Motorola Calgary was rumored to be the first ever Motorola Android on Verizon Wireless but the article outing the Motorola Sholes is saying the exact same thing - that it will be the first ever Motorola Android on Verizon Wireless. Actually they don’t explicitly state that but they claim an October launch… and I don’t see another MotoDroid launching on VZW before then. So could the Sholes just be a re-designed version of the Calgary, made to look more sleek and sexy? Or are they really two different phones.

 • 3.7 inch touch screen
 • 480×854 pixels resolution
 • QWERTY slider

 • Standard CDMA, EVDO Rev A.
 • Dimensions: 60.00 x 115.80 x 13.70 mm

Mmm seems legit. Verizon users may have something special coming their way after all.

Had a go on a friends HTC Magic today, seemed quite nice, if a little clunky.

My problem is that I'm now moving over to the O2 (UK) network, and they don't currently carry any android stuff... gah! Hopefully that will change before I make the move..

I'm currently on O2, and thinking of switching over to Android.

I checked out Orange's offer for the Hero, and it looks pants really. T-Mobile's deal looks quite attractive to me, but I'm not sure how network coverage is for T-Mobile. Anyone pitch in on that?

Or does anyone know if O2 have any sexy Android phones incoming?

And do I get the G1 or the Hero; because looking at that Donut a few posts above, it might not apply to the Hero. Erk.

Help, GAF!

Received my black MyTouch today. Very, very impressed with the build quality, form factor, and presentation (the T-mobile case included a cool little pouch, a nice pair of headphones, and a screen protector). Bonus!

I played around with the OS a bit - downloaded a few apps. Everything seemed to work beautifully. I wanted to get my InvisibleShield installed, so I shut it down after awhile, and it's currently "setting" in saran wrap and a vacuum sealed bag to maximize the InvisibleShield form factor :lol

InvisibleShield seems like it's going to be great, but it was a pain in the ass to install, mostly because I'm a little obsessive about getting it as clean as possible.

Here are a few impressions on the MyTouch InvisibleShield that I emailed to ZAGG.com:

Tonight I completed my first installation of an InvisibleShield. While I think I did okay (currently drying for 12-24 hours), I have a couple of comments on the MyTouch shield:

1. The application instructions on the cardboard sleeve said to "look to the inner sleeve for more detailed instructions" -- I had no such instructions in the inner sleeve.

2. It wasn't entirely clear right away which of the side pieces were supposed to go where. Because of the lengths of the pieces and where the curves were located, I think maybe two of the side pieces were reversed (i.e., adhesive on the wrong side). I think I got them applied okay, however.

3. I guess I used too much of the spray at the beginning, and so I was running on fumes at the end - I had to get the last couple of pieces placed on the first try. It would be good to include a bit more of the spray.

I greatly appreciate the lifetime replacement - should I ever need to remove the shield to replace it, what's the best way to do that (since I don't have any more of the spray)?

Here's an application tutorial that I found quite useful: http://www.isyougeekedup.com/palm-pre-invisibleshield-review-full-body-scratch-protection/

Here is mobile burns review of the hero. Seems like its the phone to get.

http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=7512

Overall, I can happily give the HTC Hero a "Highly Recommended" rating without any second thoughts whatsoever. No other device that I've tested has been so easy to set up and so intuitive to use, whilst also being fun and functional. If you can get over the odd chin (I quite like it, actually) then this is surely a device to seriously consider.

$25 data plan is data only, no messages. Unlimited messaging is $15 without data, so you can see the value in the $35 dollar messaging/data bundle.

!However!

Remember with an unlimted data plan if you us an im client that uses data (not the built in apps like AIM and Yahoochat) and not messaging for your messaging. Soooooooo ;)

T-Mo is notoriously slow for announcing anything of value, unfortunately.

Tricky to answer but try looking at this story for a link to an Ofcom report about 3G coverage. Note that the maps only shows areas covered by a network. I'm currently on 3 and have a hard time with the network - well, it's either the phone i have or the network, probably a bit of both ;) But I'd imagine that the quality of a network can vary, so being covered may not be enough.

Galaxy is coming to O2 - but I don't know if that counts as sexy for you? ;)

RE: updating to Donut. I don't know how they'll handle updates to the OS, I'd imagine it will be possible but I don't know how tied in to the OS the Sense UI is. If it's just sitting on top, then in theory you could upgrade the underlying OS without affecting the UI. And with the Hero, you can apparently switch the Sense UI off which makes me think you'll be able to upgrade.

G1 is a lower spec phone than the Hero. I'm currently contemplating the Magic on Vodafone - the Magic has a higher spec but unfortunately, there are two Magic models out there and the Vodafone Magic has less RAM, so I'm not sure how much difference there is between the G1 and the Magic.

Decisions, decisions...

Network coverage on T-mobile is far from great. I'm up for contract renewal, and I want a smart phone. Not sure if I'm going Android (Galaxy or Hero) or iPhone.

Hero is really tempting, but I've read too much about performance issues, I'm worried the Galaxy will be the same. Knowing O2, the Galaxy tariffs will be pretty expensive.

Galaxy, Hero or iPhone. Decisions, decisions.

Couldn't wait for Rachael so I just bought an iPhone without contract so I can sell it when Rachael arrives. :D

These are fantastic, thanks. :)

So i've renewed my contract and should be getting a HTC Hero delivered on Tuesday. Don't really know much about Android and its apps though. Have looked around the web for the "Best" apps to get but there doesn't seem to be much.

I'm thinking of getting CoPilot sat nav for it so if anyone has used it, is it worth the money? any other must have apps I should download straight away? (Does the CompareAnywhere app work in the UK?)

I thought I'd only be able to get Hero on T-Mobile or Orange but I've just seen that some sites are offering the Hero on Vodafone. Albeit the brown one though :( Was thinking I was going for the Magic but now I'm confused! Stupid 18 month contracts!

Here's hoping that the people behind the HTC Touch Pro team to get a working version of Android for CDMA users.

I just bought a HTC Touch Pro, and they have somewhat of a working version (minus the CDMA since Donut isn't out yet).

I love the idea of Android, and I love how most of the HTC phones have physical keyboards. After using an iPhone and then selling it, I don't think I can go back to a touch screen keyboard. Typing it in the rain or in the cold just spells disaster for the digitizer.

Until then, I'll probably be running cooked up custom roms of WM 6.5 on my phone.

I've read that Android phones can be synced with OSX contacts and calendars.

Is this true as well?

Video recording confirmation is awesome. It's a feature of the new iPhone I was looking forward to.
