Android |OT8| ConFuchsia say beta is better

One disappointing thing about the Moto Z Play (and I assume most slightly older, non-flagship android phones) is the lack of great case options.

Spigen is my usual go-to case maker and they didn't do any for the Z Play. :(

They hired Rick Osterloh to help sort this out. He's only been around a little over a year and this is not the kind of thing you get squared away overnight. Apple and Samsung have both had a very long time to get their operations houses in order.

well year over year there's clearly no improvement lol

The bigger issue is that you can only have economies of scale when you have scale. Samsung and Apple sell hundreds of millions of phones every year. Of course they always get the best components and pay the lowest prices, especially in the case of Samsung where they design and manufacture almost all the core components themselves.

This is why HTC is on it's deathbed and LG/Sony can't ever catch any traction. When you are paying more per device to manufacture less there's just about nothing you can do. I don't even really think Google has a choice in pricing the Pixel 2 as high as it is. It's either do that or lose money on each phone sold because they pay so much more than the equivalent cost of manufacturing that Apple and Samsung probably have.

This is also why the Chinese phones are so damn cheap by comparison. The Chinese companies have direct access to suppliers who also sell to everyone else, except they can enjoy domestic contract pricing and can squeeze in their orders between production runs from the big guys at the same factories using the same components. It's too bad the Chinese companies can't really branch out of China without taking on the same costs everyone else does and also because China doesn't allow Google the Chinese companies go and do their own thing and fork Android in terrible ways so you don't really want to use their China-focused software.

If you could install Windows on a Pixelbook it would actually be a pretty damn good Windows laptop in it's price range. They are crazy if they think people will pay that much to use Chrome OS though.

edit:

Because I am crazy and I'm actually planning on switching from Verizon to T-Mobile anyways, I'm actually looking at Pixel 2 XL because for $1000 it's a joke, but knock $325 off the price because of that promotion and now you have my attention. The lack of headphone jack is a bit distressing though. I occasionally do have use cases for the old analog hole and I would need to think hard about having to use the stupid dongle just to plug in when Bluetooth isn't available.

Being able to dual boot windows and chromeOS would be great. It'd also be a pretty decent android tablet.

This.

People like the V30, but it's gonna price drop fast like the G6. Plus the S8+ has been out a while and the Note 8 is on the market which has pushed pricing lower if you look around.

V30 is a great phone. Your crazy to pay $750-$800 for it right now though.

I really wanted to get the V30, but the idea of paying 800+ for a phone just makes me want to cringe. I said I would never pay that kind of price for any phone. I think I can do it when it hits at least 600 or below though. Most expensive phone I ever got was the G3 for $550 the year it came out. So I can still deal with a number around there, but I hate how prices keep skyrocketing and I won't support it.

But anyways, you guys think their will be deals during Black Friday or Xmas for the V30? Did the V20 have any deals during the holidays last year?

Nah, fuck windows. Every time I have to turn on a windows machine in order to use just reminds me how trash windows is. Chromebooks are just fast, quick, and ready to use in an instant. Not having windows isn't a negative, it is a plus.

I don't read much about Android anymore, currently cruising on my Nexus 5X w/ Pure Nexus installed which I love. But I use my phone on my side hustle of selling clothes on Ebay. I was thinking of getting a Pixel for the upgraded camera, but I hear the Pixel 2 might be even a step above that. I was hoping someone who's been up on the media coverage of the Pixel 2 might be able to guide me on if I should get the Pixel Or Pixel 2. AND if I'll see a bump in photo quality from my Nexus 5X.

Here's some examples of shots I get from my 5X:

Eton, nice.

Here is an album of pictures taken directly from a Pixel XL 2, no edits, no modifications: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jdcvpsQtnE5iBALt2

You be that judge :)

Someone with taste!

Wow, those pictures are stunning. I guess I would see a bump in quality. I wonder how much in my controlled lighting, white background environment.

Can't hurt to just get an actual camera! Smartphone will always have the limitations of the size of sensors.

I know, I know. As someone who is pretty minimal I have a hard time justifying spending $500 on something that will just sit on a tripod and only be used for one job. While for the same price I could have a device I use every day and also double as my studio camera.

So op5 is out of stock for a few countries. Wonder if this means something. 🤔

A op5t with a 18:9 screen could be solid. I'm gonna bet it's gonna be 1080p+ though.

Reports are that the OP5T has been canned, and they will be moving the release of OP6 up.
https://www.gsmarena.com/oneplus_5t_allegedly_cancelled-news-27517.php

If they mount the screen right side up on the OP6, I might be in. Let's see what happens. Google isn't planning on shipping me a Pixel 2 XL until October 24th anyways and I can always cancel and re-order to push it further back if it's getting close and there are signs of an early OP6.

The V30 has a better screen to body ratio, (81.2% vs 76.4) headphone jack, better water resistance, dual-cameras, MicroSD, wireless charging, high quality DAC, and the battery is only 6.5% smaller. I wonder if that's the trade-off space wise for having dual front-facing speakers or if the Pixel would have still had large bezels even without the speakers. :/

The design hasn't gotten any better though.

Heck pixel 2 stuff basically are modern nexus.

Hope they bring back the trackball and keyboard next year.
The smaller Pixel looks like a small 6P, but the XL2 looks way better than past Nexus, just not as good looking as the v30 or samsung's stuff. A modern Nexus 1 would be dope, though.

Edit: I'd take the front speakers over wireless charging, but I'd never give up a headphone jack for them. I'd rather an sd card as well, but I can live without it if given the right amount of storage.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Stereo speakers are a nice extra... But not worth sacrificing everything else lol.

Apple got it right here.

Sure they aren't both front facing, but you get sound from two areas. Plus you aren't sacrifing by having to add to the bottom bezel for space.

Eh, if Google can get the top bezel the same size as the bottom one next year (assuming they don't ditch front speakers), then it it would be quite a bit shorter. That bottom speaker on the iphone can still be covered up very easily.

Is 2017 and windows is still trash. Have you tried to cold start a windows machine lately? Windows is a joke. I can make my oatmeal breakfast during windows startup.

Is 2017 and SSD's have been a thing for a decade now. Maybe instead of complaining about Windows you should upgrade that Core 2 Duo.

What a time now that Samsung is doing respectable in phone buff speed tests lol.

Or that v30 is... Having a bad day.

Note8 has 6 GB of RAM, this is actually a big deal because some people have tested Android and it happily holds apps in memory up to everything you have. The people who have OP5 8 GB version have already shown that if you launch enough apps you can actually exceed 6 GB of memory usage. The Note8 actually outperforms the S8/S8+ in speed tests because of the 2 GB memory advantage, there's videos of that out there.

It was only last page that Mad Martigan was chastising me about how phones are not hardware specs and he's actually right. The LG V30 will be saddled with LG's crummy Android skin which will waste the 4 GB of RAM. This is one advantage the Pixel 2 will have with the same somewhat lacking 4 GB of RAM. I don't get why LG and Google think they can skimp on RAM like this when most late 2017 flagships are at 6 GB of RAM and for very good reason.

Yeah 4gb ram is what you offer in under $300 phones.

I wonder what OP6 will have. 8 GB of RAM is already kind of crazy. I wonder if they will go for 10 GB of RAM?

And still a 1080p screen? At least maybe it will be right side up?
Keep your eye on upcoming oppo and vivo phones to see what op6 will look like. 18:9 is a given.

Probably still 1080p though.

I’m in the market for a new phone and am waiting on reviews for the LG v30 consider its looks and good buzz but I hear they have quality issues.
Then there’s the galaxy line and the pixel.... how do I choose?
I don’t think I’m ready to leave my headphone jack, I care about camera quality and size( smaller without losing much performance is best).
Also is there any reason to keep waiting for other announcements or is this it from the big guys this year?

One of them has a headphone jack.[/QUOTE]

I'll take larger bezels for stereo speakers. It's a worthwhile tradeoff. Plus it's easier to hold a phone with bezels.
