Android |OT8| ConFuchsia say beta is better

HeyGuys,

I've been on iOS for the last like 6-7 years. A little tired of the minimal updates to the iPhone in terms of tech, so I've pre-ordered a Pixel 2 XL.

I'll have it in about 2 weeks, since I ordered Just Black, but I wish it was a Black and White - That looks sharp.

Just wanted to get some insight on maybe what you guys think are the best apps right now for SMS, Reddit, and Twitter. Maybe any other little tips and tricks you'll think would be beneficial for my switch over to Android. The very last Android phone I used was a Nexus S, I believe.

I think I'll miss iMessage the most.

#1 tip.

disable iMessage now.

don't wait until the phone arrives.

Use stock messaging app which is Google messages. It's the best. Enjoy Android. You will be happy you made the switch.

As someone who made the same switch about a month ago - get ready for awful standby battery time.

It doesn't really have too much impact on your overall use, but its annoying when you haven't used your phone all day and you have somehow managed to lose 30% battery.

Ended up getting the Mi A1 Android One phone as a secondary phone. Build quality is good, more on the lines of the One Plus 5, phone feels light and sleek in hand but also tends to be a little on the slippery side. Being stock Android, this phone flies. Haven't got to use camera yet and I don't think I will, also have the S8+, so photography will be on that. Battery life seems to be decent about 1.5 days on moderate usage.

Running lawn chair launcher which also feels like the stock Pixel launcher with few additional customizations.

For $200, this phone is pretty awesome, will just have to wait and see how it will be supported by either Google or Xiaomi.

Do let me know if you guys have any questions.

P.S. This phone is made in India.

So we going to pretend that's an Android-only thing in 2017? My iPhone 7 has died twice overnight with around 20% left since ios11. Check out the iOS 11 thread if you think it's just me. Time to stop pretending that Apple is still the coherent, non janky, battery protecting, non crashing apps/OS king of the smartphone world.

Deregister iMessage ahead of time

Follow these steps or use the included cable for an easy transfer of your contacts/photos/etc.

- Default Google SMS app is fine
- Sync for Reddit is great, as is Relay
- I just use the normal Twitter app, but there are plenty of options
- Duo is great for cross-platform video calls akin to facetime
- Pocketcasts for podcasts

Tips:
- Research the Google Assistant (youtube maybe?) to figure out all of the tasks it can do
- Use Google Photos for sharing and organizing photos
- Learn to use the notifications system properly instead of letting them pile up and complaining about the lack of ios-style number bubbles
- Don't download battery savers, anti-virus apps, etc.
- Double tap "recents" button for quick switching
- Long press "recents" for split screen
- Explore available widgets (long press homescreen)

Woah that upset you.

I haven't tried iOS11. I've heard the complaints. Although it sounds like on the new phones the battery life is amazing.

Every iPhone I had the standby time could extend to a number of days. That just isn't possible on Android. No major issue as I said because you charge your phone every day - but worth pointing out to people switching.

Forgot how handy wireless charging is lol Pixel XL should be here tomorrow so I can retire the N4 again but been a weird blast from the past but it really doesn't like Nougat lol

White Essential is up to dubiously spend money on: https://shop.essential.com/products/phone?variant=34714128897
Holy shit, they should have continued bundling the camera with the phone given how poorly it is selling. Who the shit is spending $180 on a camera accessory. That black front with white back looks absolutely gorgeous though. I think the Essential phone might be the best looking phone this year in my opinion with the iPhone X and Galaxy S8 taking the 2nd and 3rd spots.

Phew, I was able to figure out my Google Maps voice nav issue while listening to other audio apps.

Tried it out with wired headphones and everything worked fine so I thought it was just a bluetooth issue. Then I tried it out on my S7 Edge (where it had worked successfully for over a year) and it was doing the same issue there!
I thought it might be a Google Maps issue or even an Android OS issue at this point so I tried out an old iPhone 5 I had floating around and that also had the exact same issue.

So after ruling out phone, OS, and apps, I finally realized it was my headphones. I forgot I had started a firmware upgrade on my Bose headphones through their app a week or two ago and I must not have let it finish (it was taking forever). So I finally went through the full upgrade process and it finally fixed the problem.

Ugh. Leaning heavily towards getting a v30.
Flossy's retail unboxing and impressions were really glowing.

Also cool that it comes with a 2 year warranty out of the box.

If that new T-Mobile spectrum works well this phone could be a really fantastic option (once it inevitably drops in price).

Honestly the skin kills every LG phone for me. I felt so relieved after getting my pixel and selling my G6

It's because the XL2 has no headphone jack, or else I'd be getting that. My only hangup is LG's software.
I kinda have the same issue as both of you. I've got a stock Android phone for the past 3 years and I love the feel. But I did play around with a display model and it didn't feel as blehhhh as the Samsung skin. As long as it's pretty damn close to stock Android feel I'll get used to it
Don't get a v30 yet. Priced too high. Software is a bit buggy and hangs a bit from my usage of a retail one.
My Nexus 6 is crapping out on me hard and I could really use the $200 gc to buy a Chromebook for school ☹️☹️

Got the new XZ1 Compact.. Amazing tiny phone coming from the Z5 premium. I wanted to slim down, plus my headphone jack stopped working etc..

Anyway, does Android Oreo handle file transfer differently?
I can't seem to move files to my sd card.

I'm also thinking about it because of the headphone jack and it checking all the other boxes.
I dont want to be left dry on updates though so the pixel 2 xl is my other front runner. I want to stay firm on no jack no sale but the stock android!!
Theres also the Note 8 to consider.

Edit: seeing the trade in credit offered by google for the older pixel is also empowering for getting value off my phone in the future.

I was at best buy the day before playing around with the Sony phones on display there and I just kept thinking "who the hell buys these things"? Expensive, big bezels, ugly as sin skin, garbage cameras, etc.

I guess PlayStation fans?

I never had an iPhone (and I had five before I switched to Android) that was able to last more than 10 hours, except for the original 2G model. Long standby times on iOS is a myth.

I'm leaving the iOS11 dumpster fire today for sure. I don't want a big phone after getting used to the iPhone 7 size, so I'm looking at an s8. At&t has a $300 trade in deal which will bring the price down to $450 but I'm strongly considering Best Buy's offer that's only $150 off the price only because they have exclusivity on the Coral Blue color. Decisions, decisions.

But then you have to deal with Samsung's Android.

I wanted Coral Blue soo bad, but not if you're gonna have to pay $150 more for it.

This is a dead ass lie, especially for the Pixel which has better standby time than my iPhone 7+

And it's a damn lie that the iPhone lasts a number of days. I last about A single day on a good day with very minimal usage, not multiple days upon use.

Stock android is overrated and Oreo has no features I truly care about. Samsung has improved touchwiz in the past two years faster than Google has improved Android.

I know, you'd have to be CRAZY to pay $150 more for Coral Blue, right? Right? Also, it's not EXACTLY $150 because I'd have to trade in a phone for the AT&T deal while the Best Buy price doesn't require a trade in. I'm trying to get my in-law's old iPhone 5 to trade in, but if not I'll have to turn in my Axon7 and that's not going to be worth it imo since that phone's still pretty awesome.

This is partly why I switched my work phone to iPhone 7. It's going to be sitting a lot without use, and I know it can go days just sitting. Currently at 74 hours standby with 4 hours usage and at 35%.

I previously had a Galaxy S6 for work and if I would blink at it, it would lose 5%.

Thanks, this is pretty comprehensive. I actually have quite a few Google products already running my home. Nest, Google Home, Nvidia Shield, Google Wifi. But I've chosen Apple for my mobile devices like laptops, phones, etc.

Google Assistant is great.

My 6s Plus now is super buggy with iOS11. Sometimes my alarm doesn't go off, which makes me mad. Freezes for no reason. I'm getting tired of it.
The S8 screen size is like an inch bigger than the iPhone 7, I'm sure it'll take a little getting used to.

Can't wait for my Pixel 2.

Go back and read my original post. I specifically said without any use.

My iPhone 7+, which I don't use now I have my Note8, has been going 3 days with no use and no need for charge. It could probably go another day. That is what standby time is - when the phone is not being used.

iOS in my experience is much better than Android there - and a quick google would suggest this is fairly commonly understood and agreed.

Does anyone have a Chrome book for their tablet use? I wanna get the higher end Asus Chrome book Flip but I feel it might be too bulky just carrying it and using it around the house.

Are you actually gonna use the Chrome OS part of it?

If you're gonna be 90% tablet then just get a tablet.
