Anime Ignoramous

Now, I like Anime. But as a youth I never went there, so much. I was more into spending my time and money on music equipment, and when I watched a movie or read a book I tended towards, well different stuff, like maybe Jack Kerouak or David Lynch etc.
So, anyways, now I want to catch up. I mean, I've seen Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and I know of a lot of the stuff that gets played on Cartoon Network, and from time to time I see different things here and there.
but beyond that... I want to know what the true conniseur quality ish is, so I can rent or buy it...

Wait, what's this? Got any details? I haven't heard of a new Bebop release.

I'll take you out!

But yah, Fulmetal Alchemist. Good.

You might like Macross Plus. It doesn't require any knowledge of past Macross stories. Great animation, neat story. Has a very "top gun" quality. It's available as an OAV series or a movie but I prefer to OAV.

I doubt I have anything to add to what's already been mentioned, but want to repeat recommendations for:

Berserk
Full Metal Alchemist
Cowboy Bepop
Samurai Champloo
Macross Plus
Evangelion/Rah'Xephon/Gasaraki (either/or, in my opinion)
Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin): Trust and Betrayel
Perfect Blue
The 1st Patlabor Movie
The 2nd Patlabor Movie
The 3rd Patlabor Movie ("WXIII")
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083
Mobile Suit Gundam 8th MS Team
Generator GAWL (campy anime, your mileage may vary)

heh...I guess I did add some suggestions

IMO the Cowboy Bebop and GITS Standalone Complex are the best anime series. Anime in its top form. It's a shame they both only go for 20-30 episodes. While stuff like Naruto has like 150 episodes or something. It also helps they both have relatively kick ass dubs as well.

Actually I did some looking and GITS doesn't end after 1 season. Cool.

You know, it's not a mistake that anime series that go 150 episodes suck and all the best ones are 26. Filler people, filler!! You can only stretch a plot so far.

A few recomendations with brief comments.

PB09.jpg

Perfect Blue - Psychological thriller about a pop star turned actress who gets to celebrate her new career with a stalker and a mental breakdown. This would work fine as a live action film, but being animated helps keep the line between reality and the fantastic blurred - not to mention it's stylish as all hell.

actress10.jpg

Millennium Actress - A love letter to Japanese cinema circa the mid-30s through the mid-60s, as an aging star reflects on her life to a couple of hapless documentarians who find themselves reliving her films and memories. Where the shifting realities in Perfect Blue are ominous and disturbing, here they're nostalgic and glorious to behold. Simply beautiful, and with one helluva soundtrack to boot.

tokyogodfathers.jpg

Tokyo Godfathers - A retelling of the classic, oft-reworked Three Godfathers, wherein three bums in Tokyo - a drunk, a transvestite, and a teenage runaway - find an abandoned baby and try to return her to her parents. Wacky hijinx ensue, as our heroes encounter mobsters, street gangs, family members, and the occasional bit of Christmas magic. Wonderful fun!

What? I should recommend something other than Satoshi Kon flicks? Fine, fine.

castle6.jpg

Castle of Cagliostro - All of Miyazaki's flicks are great - if you haven't seen it yet, see if Howl's Moving Castle is still in theatres near you - but, if cornered, I'll peg Cagliostro as our favorite. The loveable Lupin gang (with Lupin III as their lecherous leader, Jigen as the crackshot second, Goemon as a sword weilding samurai gone crooked, and femme fatale Fujiko) find themselves rescuing a princess and discovering a hidden treasure in one of the best adventure films, animated or otherwise, ever made.

pic_memories.jpg

Memories - An anthology film featuring adaptations of three short manga by Katsuhiro "Akira" Otomo: the beautiful "Magnetic Rose", wherein salvage astronauts answer a distress signal and find themselves in a baroque, operatic nightmare; "Stink Bomb", black comedy about a hapless pharmaceutical researcher who becomes a living chemical weapon; and the European-styled fable "Cannon Fodder", about a society and their endless war.

031.jpg

Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door - Bebop really shines as a TV series (26 episodes on 6 DVDs), but if you want to get a taste for the show the movie is as good an introduction as you could ask for. It's 2071 and our heroes (Spike Spiegel, the martial artist with a dark past; Jet Black, ex-cop and long-suffering captain; Faye Valentine, all femme but not so much fatale; and Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, mutant prepubescent hacker) are interstellar bounty hunters struggling to keep food on the table. While the characters are great, the animation is lavish, and the plot is intriguing, what really makes Bebop shine is it's sheer, overwhemling amount of style. It is the embodiment of style, particularly in it's everything and the kitchen sink soundtrack. So, check out the movie, and if you like it start watching the TV series posthaste.

So, there you go. Six flicks, all readily available in the US on DVD, and a series to check out if you dig on these. If you tear through Bebop and find yourself wanting more, the creators recently completed the delightfully anachronistic Samurai Champloo, 26 episodes of hip-hop samurai ass-kicking. If you really liked Ghost in the Shell, start watching the 26 episode TV series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, which has one helluva budget, smart writing, and one helluva on-going plot in the Laughing Man storyline. And, if you're really hardcore, go rent Assemble Insert. Trust me.

Listen to FnordChan. Nailed a LOT. Anyway, I'll just throw a few movies and shows out there that have blown me away.

Cowboy Bebop - A fav of everyone. Incredible anime. By the end you'll love it. Amazing characters, beautiful one of a kind storytelling, and a touch for the cinematic.

Berserk - An absolute addictive anime. Maybe THE best I've seen. The most impactful series on my own views as well. Sadly though, not many like the ending. It's unforgettably memorable but no the ideal place to leave off. You'll want to jump into the manga after the series ends. Still, my favorite anime ever.

Monster - Quickly rising up the ranks, this show has me addicted only like Berserk was able to. So many well developed characters, and some intense episodes. It's Berserk all over again with more episodes and an ending. It started slow, but soon after, I couldn't wait for the next episode. I really really admire the series consistency of brilliance as well. What a ride. Oh, and Johan and Griffith are 2 of the most thought provoking characters ever in an anime. he hasn't reached Griffith's level yet where I am but he's amazing.

Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on Heaven's door (movie) - One more go around for the Bebop crew. Really enjoyed it while it lasted. Very rewatchable and some great visuals. Among the best anime movies out there.

Spirited Away (movie) - An incredible experience. Watch it at night, alone, and in a dark room. You can so easily get carried away in the fantasy roots. By the end, it stands alone in the type of experience it offers. My favorite Miyazaki flick, though I am ashamed to admit I havent seen Castle of Cagliostro. Will restart my search on FnordChan's recommendation as soon as possible. Best Buy price tag has been the stopper.

Samurai Champloo - Awesome awesome series. From the 1st episode, you can see Wantanabe is unlike any other director in anime. Just hits the adreaneline and has fun with it. Incredible cinematography as well. So many cool shots. The character designs are insanely good too. All the art is just beautiful. And the sword fights, better than any other anime easily. When he hits his best moments, he brings emotion, style, substance, and everything else together in one package. I can't obsess over this guy enough.

FLCL - Unlike any other anime, just a crazy fun ride. The animation style is incredible. The fluidity makes it beautiful to watch. Among the best looking in any anime. The color's, character design, music, action sequences, imagination.. One crazy well done package. DO NOT MISS. The story is bizarre and doesn't make sense to unless you really watch it. Just an extra bonus though. it's really like a weird lovable song you just sit through, know the meaning, even better. Doesn't change the fact that it's unlike any other anime in the ability to thow you in a trance.

Next anime movie Im checking out is Memories. I have been meaning to see that for a long time. The concept and art really intrigued me and Ive seena lot of recommendations for it.

Wow, thanks.

Every single one of those seems appealing to me, and I thought I've lost all interest in anime.

It's probably due to all of these suggestions being movies.

B000228T4U.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Kino's Journey It's my favourite anime show...no wait... it's also the best anime of all time, kinda like on-the-road Little Prince written by Kafka, very thought-provoking and somehow emotionally brutal despite its kiddy outlook and relaxing atmosphere (last episode destroys), also filled with rather subtle sarcasm and nihilism. In other words it's a real deal unlike all that safe and moralistic Miyazaki nonsense :lol

I agree with all of FnordChan's recommendations. I'd basically recommend all of Satoshi Kon's works as well, so you may want to give Paranoia Agent a try too (His first TV series -- 13 episodes).

you know, Watanabe and Nabeshin both need to do more series.

Watanabe has done:
The Animatrix
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo

Nabeshin has done:
Excel Saga
Puni Puni Poemi

Everything these guys touch is gold. Any word on any other series they're doing?

I actually like the One Piece american intro better than the japanese one

Don't listen to Matlock.

Watch them all.

Castle of Cogliostro

Porco Rosso

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind

Princess Mononoke

Spirited Away

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

My Neighbor Totoro

Kiki's Delivery Service (Yeah, I said it, bitches!)

I watched them all straight a few weeks ago and they're as good as I remembered them. Some are old, but they hold up quite well.

I'd tell you to watch Conan, The Boy of the Future, but it would be hard to track down.

Also, watch Grave of the Fireflies (this one is not Miyazaki, but it's a great film).

It's kinda hip on the interweb to hate on Miyazaki nowadays, but he's a great director.

I was gonna type up short comments for each of these, but fuck it, maybe later.

The EviLore/Hitokage Approved Anime List:

-Akira
-Berserk
-Cowboy Bebop
-Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
-FLCL
-Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Gungrave (Sans ep 1)
-Hajime no Ippo
-Hunter X Hunter (TV, not OVA)
-Jin Roh
-Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu (TV, not OVA)
-Last Exile

-Maison Ikkoku
-Neon Genesis Evangelion
-Planetes
-Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen

-Studio Ghibli and related works.

*cry* no one's mentioned Trigun yet :/

I rank Trigun right up there with Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, although I'm sure a lot of people don't agree with me. I wish they'd had more funding for animation on Trigun, but I love the characters and the story.

Ghost in the Shell 2:Innocence is cool, but I've only watched it once and it totally hacked my brain at the time, I need to give it another watch myself.

I really want to see Blood:The Last Vampire. It's very short, but looks very awesome.

Also, no one's mentioned Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust yet? The first one was ok, but this 2nd one is really good.

The old Fist of the Northstar movie isn't bad, either.

I'll throw in my support for Memories and all the Miyazaki stuff too. :D

The scary thing is, I don't know if you're actually serious or not in this post. :lol

You missed the most important word of all, though:

Baka

Miyazaki films
Fullmetal Alchemist
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo

As for my own personal tastes:

The Slayers: Medieval-fantasy comedy. Doesn't fall to the magic-girl/teenage fighting/giant robots/boob-fanservice cliche of anime, and is quite funny at times.

Gundam: The Movie Trilogy: See what started one of the biggest anime franchises ever

Dragonball Z: Watch the Cell Saga, which, IMO, is the best storyline. Before it is rather slow and afterwards is just dragged on relentlessly.

Naruto

Here's my un-censored take on anime.

Most of anime is pure turd or are so inanely complex and aimed at the otaku crowd who pour over every episode that it will turn off many views. A lot of its popularity right now in the west has to with the worst shows being relatively higher quality, better written and better produced than your average show that passes for saturday cartoons on western TV.

But then again Japan has the advantage of an integrated entertainment industrial complex that ties manga, anime, pop-music and the movie industry together. Western animated shows are more like one off productions languishing as a profit center for the TV networks and they are always licensed crap or a Japanese import poorly dubbed and sanitized. The better shows are in a different genre altogether.

As has already been mentioned, there are some relatively better stuff out there.
Miyazaki stuff are always amazing

Of the long running shows (although I'm not caught up anymore) Naruto would get my vote, just because it's a good story although they seem to be dragging it forever.

Of the past shows, Cowboy Bepop is good, although ironically I didn't discover it until I was living in Canada. Evangelion was and is the greatest anime series produced and it's my show, cause at one time, I felt a lot of the same things Shinji did.

I don't know about the newer stuff from this year or last year so I won't comment, although Bleach show promise. There are some good independents out there as well. Makoto Shinkai's stuff is great, and I got to meet him in person before too.

Full Metal Alchemist gets a lot of love here, but I hated it. I'll go hide now from the expected backlash from FMA fans.

Since there are already a couple of votes for Naruto in this thread, I figured I'd chime in and recommend One Piece. For a long series, I find One Piece much more satisfying than Naruto.

Also, no one ever talks about Great Teacher Onizuka. I haven't watched it all the way through yet, but I really like what I've seen.

Onizuka was definitely cool, from what I saw of it. I should watch more.

Also, I've been meaning to see more of Evangelion, but I really doubt I'll be able to get past the whole IMABOUTTOBREAAAAK angst stuff, going by the first four episodes.

Nah, it may not hold up quite as well on a second viewing. Which is why Read or Die OVA wasn't listed.

Speaking of which, I gotta watch the whole Crest/Banner of the Stars saga.

I think Seikai no Senki III starts airing on the 14th or sometime around then.

FMA really isn't that good. It's not bad but just not great either. My complaints could be traced back to the past FMA threads. So yah, I just hope that duckroll doesn't murder us cause I heard the FMA movie sucked even more. DAMN! :lol
