Another Band Brothers 'concert' video.

I never thought about this beforehand, but during the music editor video, it would be pretty easily possible to put in just about any song in there. I wish someone would be able to elaborate on the whole editor feature, how complex it is, how much control you have in it, how long songs can be, if you get to edit single instruments, etc. With some work you could probably get the favorite songs from your favorite bands in it, or some classic theme songs, just about anything and then play them with your friends, hell I find that to be a very impressive feature. Wish we could learn more about it though.

Thanks for the video links, this is probably one of the best, if not the best DS JPN launch title, sadly it seems to have gotten quite overlooked.

Pretty neat.
I'll probably be fooling around with the song editor more than the actual game.

But who are these people?

I just love the idea of this game. Pity I can't ever see myself with 7 other DSs around. I'd be insanely lucky to find 3 others who all want to play the game at once. I'll have to go to gaming events or something.

As for who they are, I guess they work for Nintendo. Or maybe HAL specifically, it is Itoi's site (Mother/Earthbound creator).

I know you'd like a really detailed write-up, and I'd like to be able to give you one, but I really need to get to bed. I'll answer a few of your questions quickly, though.

You can write 8 independent tracks per song, and have full control over each. Each track can use any one of the midi instruments used in any of the songs in the game. So several guitars, pianos, basses, drum kits, horns, and quite a few others. Music is written on a staff with the appropriate formal notation, but don't worry if you can't read music - you can easily figure out the staff by simply placing the notes by "sound." As you move each note around on the staff it plays the note of the corresponding location so you can be sure it's in the right place. You can also perform pretty simple edit functions like copy/cut-and-paste. When listening back to the work in progress, you can easily add or remove complete instruments from the mix and can change the volume of each independent track around. As for song length, I'm not sure of an exact time in minutes, but I've been working on a track for a while now and it only fills up about 1/10th of the allowed space. I'd say they can probably be at least 5+ minutes long.

In other words, it's a full-fledged MIDI sequencer, and a fairly complete one at that. It's also pretty hard to figure out since it's all in Japanese, mostly Kanji, but I've memorized most of the functions by now. So yes, it's possible and not extremely difficult to compose either your own song or a MIDI version of a favorite game/movie/etc tune. You can save 8 tracks, I think. I plan on filling up all 8 slots with a variety of original and well-known tunes, and will post mp3s as I complete each for those who are curious.

Oh, and as soon as you're done with a composition - even if you're only halfway finished, actually - it appears as a playable track in the arcade mode song list. It's just that easy. I've been linking up with a couple of friends and it works flawlessly.

That's awesome. Even if you can't be bothered working out tunes yourself, I'm sure plenty will be posted online.

Indeed. I can imagine an Animal-Crossing type community setup for sheet music.

they hooked the ds up to an amp :o

wtf you can make songs just by humming notes into the microphone?!?!?

Did anyone else watch the video of the girl humming into the mic? When she played it back, it seemed like it was way off (rhythm-wise).

It's not a very intuitive mode to begin with. If you're really looking to create a more accurate song you can go into a notation editor and do it by hand.

The only thing that kind of disappoints me is the fact that you can only save 8 songs.

However, everything else about this game is awesome. It's a full-fledged midi synthesizer for 30 dollars. :D

Hah, very nice bobby thanks, answers everything I wanted to know. God I really have to import this soon. I'll probably be picking up the English version as well assuming it has its own decent song list, so it's going to be quite a blast. Your description of the song editor mode got me very very hyped.

Just picked it up on Sunday, and damn it's rocking me! Actually, I got to try it a bit at a new year's party. One of my friends had it so we had 3 DS's going :D Next thing I know, I was racing to Kicks the next day to grab it :D

You can thank me for nagging Siu Wai until he finally got it in. He was totally skeptical about it at first. :D
