If you look at what happend with Switch it seems that Nintendo have first released remakes/remasters of old relatively inactive franchises before releasing a brand new entry. Examples include Samus Returns before Metroid Dread, Link's Awakening before Echoes of Wisdom and Famicom Detective Club before Emio.

Based on these precedents I'd say the obvious franchise to make a comeback is Donkey Kong, probably a 2D Country game developed by EPD Tokyo since they recruited for a 2D game a few years ago. I'd also cite Advance Wars, Another Code and maybe F-Zero.

Couldn't have put it any better myself, these are my exact predictions too (though I am doubtful about Advance Wars, much as I'd love it.

F-Zero seems like a good bet because of F-Zero 99. Golden Sun is another possibility. Nintendo is on a RPG kick lately and they still work with Camelot on Mario Sports. Punch Out!! and Captain Toad both have references in Switch games so maybe those too. I’m also expecting Mysterious Murasame Castle to show up at some point. Nintendo keeps bringing it up (VC/NSO and Nintendo Land) even though it never released outside Japan.

I’d love to see Pilotwings and Waverace but I’m not expecting those. You never know with Nintendo, though.
