just wondering if there is any way to read, and even participate in AOL message boards without actually having the AOL service? like maybe there is some place on the web that has AOL message boards running.

Uh... why? Most of their message boards are pretty much dead anyway.

And no, you can't access AOL features without AOL, unless you want to get into Private Rooms, but I believe now they seperate AOL from AIM PRs.
