Any wine experts here?

I'm going to a very casual lunch get-together at a friend's house tomorrow, and I've been asked to bring a bottle of wine. We're just having cold-cuts, salads, and other light fare.

I found a wine selection website that recommends white wines with cold meats and cheeses: Chablis and Rhine Reisling (dry) or Liebfraumilch (sweet). Of these, I've only had Chalis before.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Ignore the white and red with specific foods bullshit.

Take a Merlot. And if you've got $20 to drop, you'll taste the difference.

Anything white should be fine, I'd say. Australian/New Zealand wines are a good bargain--you used to be able to get an insanely good NZ wine for $10 until everyone caught on, but you can still get some pretty good stuff for $15 these days.

Liebfraumilch and Cold Cuts are like Peanutbutter and Jelly. Errr, its not for everyone though.

If you like Chalis take that, although like was said merlot is agood choice. Still, Lieb might be anice try and IMO goes best with like cold ham and salami and rye bread sandwhiches, OMFG now I want one.

Make sure that your party can all drink reds. Many people, like my wife, cannot drink red whines because of the sulfites it contains. Some people are actually allergic to them.

But that's only, what, 1% of the population? And sweet white wines contain even more sulfites than red.

Australian wines are great and inexpensive. I personally like drinking chardonnay or pinot grigio(white>>>red IMO). More on the dry side. Not too sweet. Sweet is for pussies...... But then again we are talking about wine here...lol

Oh, get the brand with the Kangaroo logo on it. The bottle is huge, brightly colored and is about 13.00. Not to mention it tastes great.

Liebfraumilch is vile.
Rielsing, Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio if you're getting a white.
Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon if red.

I like dry better pretty much also, but IMO sweet goes better with cold meat.

I drink anything though. :D

No, it's vile. It's fizzy piss. The German folk I work with think it funny that it's so popular. It's a training wine for teenagers.

When I was younger Drinks I got had to be sweet and taste like juice for me to like them. Now that I'm older I find I hate overly sweet tasting wines/alcohol. I guess tastes do change over time. I used to hate beer too, now I love it. *shrugs*

Thanks for the responses...now I've got some ideas in mind when I visit the store. I'd better stay away from the Liebfraumilch if, like you say, it's an acquired taste.

It's interesting that most of the websites I visited said, "Don't worry about the rules! Experiment! Drink any wine with anything!" That's not very helpful when you need something for a specific occasion that you hope everyone will like.

Thanks again.

Don't get Merlot, it dates you as a 90's hipster. For the lunch you described you could choose something blindfolded and it would work.

I used to work in a restaurant. You definetly need a white for those foods. I've noticed most people enjoy Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Riesling for lunch. In that order. Dry wines are usually more popular.

I can't recall many people ordering red wines except at dinner. But again it depends on the food.

I say screw 'em and go with a bottle of Crown Royal.

- That said I think you have gotten some good advice from everyone here I can't add. I know on NPR they had something about good wine that was inexpensive. I'll look up the article and get back to you.

Back this 1.99 bottle of wine 2002 Charles Shaw Shiraz, beat out 2,300 wines to win a prestigious double gold medal.

I cannot stomach two buck chuck from Trader Joes, give me Yellow Tail Shiraz, it's only $3 more most of the time.

I prefer red wine over white, but for the lunch described, you really need to go with a white.

If they define their tastes by the trends, that solves everything. I'd get the cheapest piece of shit bottle for that kind of crowd, and then make better friends.
