In my most recent gamepad haul, I came up with a six-button Genesis pad that is a clearly very different model than the re-designed six-button that was sold with the Genesis 2.

The PCB does not have a Sega logo on it (encoder chip is covered), but the case and plug do.
My best guess is that this is a six-button release right before they released the Genesis 2.

I suspect otherwise.

It has Sega logos, a Sega model number, and (coming from a guy who's disassembled almost a dozen Genny pads in the last week) the inside is set up just like a Sega pad.

The only chink is the PCB, which is pretty damning I'll admit.

Plus, although the one above doesn't show it, the Genesis 2 style six-button also came with a Mode button and Auto\Slow select switch.

I just noticed (and this seems obvious now) that there is no TM trademark after the Sega logo on the front.

Also it is made in China (like PSX pads) where my other Genny pads are made in Taiwan.

Still, if it was a legit 3rd party pad, you'd think there would be a Madcatz or Interact logo on it. Plus legit 3rd party pads don't usually have the appropriate 1st party logo.

But if it was a shady China clone, how'd it end up in Northern Kentucky?

The turbo switch version ArcadeStickMonk posted is Majesco's Genesis3 (somewhat crappy) remanufacture. The one you have may be a different version of it.

(Edit: Wait, you are him. Oops. The one with the black turbo switch is like the ones I have.)

The Sega 3-button controller remains the best Genesis controller. The 6button was a good design, but it was of extremely poor manufacture. Ascii did a number of interesting controllers (most notably one modelled after the SNES controller), but they weren't much good either.

Wow, wtf to the max. I don't recall why I bought the Genny 6-button as soon as it came out, but it was an outstanding buy. I found it to be better than the 3-button in every way, most notably the amazing, better-than-Saturn d-pad. The small size is great too. It's a winner.

I figured this quote would be a good excuse to bring up the various D-pad assemblies that I've pulled out of Genny pads.

They started with just a pad resting on rubber, then stuck a ball bearing in the center of the rubber, then moved to more complex gimbled assemblies.

So depending on which version of the 3-button you get, the d-pad quality can vary quite heavily.

Hmm, very interesting. I had the Genny 2 pack-in 3button pad... that might explain something

I'm probably just biased against the 6button pads because my first-party ones have just fallen apart -- the strain relief coming apart, the contacts not registering quite properly... I didn't use the 3button pad nearly as much back then, so it's in much better shape.

Oh, the "normal" 6button pad has a mode switch on the right shoulder (as I'm sure you know).

If that was manufactured by SEGA, the coloration of the start and mode buttons indicates that it was intended for a Megadrive territory, not a Genesis one.

I used to see those on trade-in once in a while when I worked in a game store in the mid-90's. Don't know anything in particular about them myself, but Seth C's explaination makes sense to me.

I thought Sega had 2 lines of pads for every model, a regular pad and a "pro" version with the turbo and slow buttons...

In fact I think I might have a box and the controller in my garage.

This just arrived in the mail today with my Genny 3. A Majesco six-button

It has the same model number of the mystery controller (MK-1470) and is also made in china.
Also, no Tm symbol after the SEGA and the PCBs are different, but both have a covered encoder.
Could these both be Majesco pads?

Did no such thing.

Original file name was ASM-Gen6-1470.jpg, where 1470 was the model number.

Upon examing the Majesco Gen 3 6-button, I noticed that it was also a 1470.

I had one of those (funky looking) Sega pads.. but it was colored different. I did care for it much..but it worked nice for it's turbo function on games like Terminator2 the arcade game.

At one point in time I considered the real 6 button Sega pad to be the best controller ever.

So, yeah. Megadrive had a 6-button controller in the form factor of a 3btn. I should try to track one of those down
