Anyone actually had any luck with GarageBand? (Non-loops of course)

I'm curious as to anyone actually having any luck getting past three tracks of real instruments (guitar, bass, ummm... keyboard) for at least one minute without their Macs getting completely obliterated. Damn you Apple, optimize your software. It could be my G3 800mhz iBook though. I wonder if I should get a G5 iMac. I really want to record stuff. Anyone actually recording full songs on the thing? If so, got link? I'm curious.

Most likely, it's your computer. :(

A G3 600Mhz with 256MB of ram is the minimum spec for GarageBand. Don't know how much ram you have, but your processor is just sneaking by. I'm not sure why recording audio is giving you so much hassle though. Are you recording everything live, or using the software instruments? The software instruments require at least a G4. Some of the effects also, I believe.

If you're recording live tracks, your best bet would be to break them up into smaller files, instead of leaving it as one long track. Especially for anything that's just repeating itself. It should help alleviate some memory problems at least.

Oh, just noticed there's a 1.1 update on Apple's site as well, may want to try that and see if it helps, if you haven't already.

I have done one with GarageBand, but I've moved over to Logic Express now so I can't comment. GarageBand really wants a G4 as a minimum and at least 512 MB Ram. It will run on lesser configs, but its not really happy. Especially if you don't have a lot of ram.
